Suzuki 600 GSX-R 1998

Question efficiency and character of tracker, the GSX-R, it is a resolutely formidable tool. Except … All the time in the laps, it’s exhilarating on the track but it can get boring on the road. Appeared in 97, the clone in reduction of the 750 GSX-R offered its watts only at the approach of 10 000 rpm. So, for her new vintage, little Gixer has carefully reviewed her guts.

Lighter valves controlled by a more aggressive distribution, reduced friction of moving parts, optimized air intake, larger air box, new exhaust (it is that of the 750), new carburettors; this is basically what has changed on the 600 GSX-R. But from the outside, nothing appears. It is still the 7 and a half in the 600 version, from which it stings its silhouette and its chassis.
On paper, that gives 4 more horsepower for the full version but above all a better filled engine. On version 98, we really feel the improvement from 7000 rpm. After this speed, the 4-cylinder, which excites your right hand from low revs, lets go of the herd of cannons. The old Gex, she is still wondering how she will free her pack. A glaring and striking difference knowing that only 1 year separates them. Where it hurts for the 97 is when the lap times speak. In the game of covers, the news pulverizes the times of its predecessor. When the difference is calculated in hundredths, we can still appeal; but when there are 2 digits to tenths, we incline. This performance is not due to the new breath of the engine but also to the shorter gear ratio – one more tooth at the crown is not nothing. This has also softened the transmission which no longer hiccups when driving slowly between 2 cars in 3rd or 4th gear..
Dynamic question, no obvious change. Normal, the chassis remains the same. A cocktail of efficiency, precision and lightness that now knows how to offer a little more comfort. In addition to its improved engine behavior, the 600 GSX-R adopts a higher bubble and, to optimize the front axle to its liking, the fork gains hydraulic compression adjustment. Note a slight loss of “feel” when braking because the discs have thickened by 0.5 mm. In return, the endurance is remarkable.

No change of philosophy for the virulent little Suzuki. . The pilot sits sporty, very sporty, and, even if the power curves are more pleasant, one should not hope to evolve on the fat of the couple; anyway, a 600 tracker is not made for that. If the GSX-R is only really at ease between vibrators, its evolution 98 has gained in savoir-vivre, especially its mill.
In the supersport category, the Gex is among the best machines. The main threat to her is the very versatile Kawasaki ZX-6R. Neither will give each other gifts.
