Although displaying a sleek and tense aesthetic, the 1000 GSX-R hardly differs from its siblings 600 and 750. From there to say that they are the same, there is still a margin. Do not stumble on the 4-digit sticker to distinguish it. Apart from the very slightly specific decoration and the wider tire (a 190 mm), the big Suz is especially recognizable by its front axle: 6-piston brake calipers and Kayaba inverted fork treated with titanium nitrate.
As with the crackers, the best is inside. If the GSX-R 1000 is not more intimidating than the 750, under its dress hides an engine stuffed with dynamite. 4 kg heavier than the 3/4 liter, it boasts an intractable strike force: 160 hp. With a dry weight of just 170 kgs, no need to draw you a picture – it will bleed. In the competition, a knot in the stomach has just formed. The fuel is supplied by injection as well as a new double butterfly system via the intake duct. One is controlled by the pilot, the other by the electronic control unit which manages it optimally. The titanium exhaust line receives a valve named SET (Suzuki Exaust Tuning), similar to Yamaha’s EXUP, which promotes low-end torque..
And for a 1000, it causes very very severe. The boiler is available from 3000 rpm, full and available at all speeds. He goes into the towers with incredible vigor. No inertia, watts everywhere, and a powerful motor behavior, violent limit but never brutal. Engine manufacturers have not just added a mess of horses anywhere, anyhow. The 160 nags are all there, fiery but also exploitable. Soft controls go hand in hand with the flexibility of the block. We do not find the thunderous character of the motorization of an R1; and thus, the motorcycle is much more controllable when exiting a curve or in the rain. If now you think that the machine is easy, really screw the handle … 1st: you are vertical – 2nd: wheeling over 30 km – 3rd: it still lifts … Stop playing smart and judge your talents of this sportswoman on her favorite place: the track.
The cycle part being almost the same as the 750, we find the same qualities. Quick to dive into the bend, it is not as alert as a 600 but surprising for its size. Precise, very stable, not moving a bit, she swallows the turn without batting an eyelid then takes off again like a bullet. The motor skills are bluffing and the speeds reached demonic. The 1000 is at ease in slow sequences, less in rapids than its younger sister (it is true the benchmark for sports cars). The big horsepower and partly the wide tire require the rider to be firm with the beast. Be careful, it’s nothing like a cow – But it takes a certain effort to lead it well, to change its angle in the pif-pafs … and a good dose of technique and composure to harness the full potential. It remains less physical than an R1 but above all has surprising potential for pilots. A good straight line: 3 …. 4 …. 5 .. 6 Here, the sixth is already there !?!
The last 2 reports are very close. No doubt to prevent optimists from reaching mind-boggling speeds (the Hayabusa has left its mark …). The speedometer borrowed from 750 crashes at 299 km / h. Okay, why not. This does not prevent the tachometer from continuing to climb. Good braking is required and this is where the main flaw in this super sports car is revealed. Braking is more than generous in power but its bite is less convincing (different pads should remedy this). Before the driver goes to smash the helmet in the bubble, he will appreciate the well-studied driving position, fairly collected but not so uncomfortable compared to its competitors in the niche.
Let’s not beat around the bush. The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 is a fantastic sports car. Since its appearance in the market and in the championships, it has twisted everything that rolls, won trophy after trophy, sickened all the competition, driven thousands of bikers crazy. Its only real flaw is its too marked resemblance to other GSX-Rs..
