Large price range, large differences in quality – the claim to get sporty motorcyclists through the rain is the same. Almost all boots succeed in this, although the processing of a climate membrane poses a particularly high challenge for the shoemaker. When it comes to choosing materials, only Daytona relies on expensive leather, the rest of them trust artificial leather. And still mostly offer good security. In terms of handling, fit and comfort, however, a less homogeneous picture emerges. Buse and Dainese pinch and push. This is unsporting behavior! Models from 129.90 to 339.95 euros

Waterproof sports boots should be particularly versatile. They are hardly suitable for other sports – especially not for water skiing – but when it comes to speed touring, they should keep your feet dry and cut a good figure. Ten models want to prove that this can work.

Thorsten Dentges

04/16/2015

Almost exactly a year ago we did ten sports boots up to 250 euros – without membrane – tested (see MOTORRAD 9/2014). With mostly very good and good results. The botts were comparatively light and comfortable, let a good breath of air on the feet during the hot ride and offered a lot of security. Ideal for fast drivers and occasional racers with a limited budget. But surprisingly, the providers were reluctant to release their models. Not because they didn’t trust their products, which can still be purchased in normal stores and online shops. But because they asked themselves why we didn’t want to test the sports boots with membrane, which are much more popular with customers. At the time, we probably actually thought of fast lap times rather than rain protection when selecting sports boats.

First of all, nothing speaks against sports boots with membrane equipment. After all, the majority of the drivers of a sports machine are mainly on the road and could consider this feature to be particularly important in the case of frequent bad weather trips. There may also be pure racetrack drivers who prefer to roll back into the pits with dry feet during rainy long-distance races or during race training.

Are these really sports boots?

Well, for the test year 2015 we sent the following request to a number of suppliers of motorcycle footwear on the market: “Please tell us a suitable product from your range of waterproof sports boots (with climate membrane) for riders of super athletes, sports tourers and naked bikes – Without a price range. ”Not all addressees could (or wanted?) Deliver, some providers would have preferred to recommend several models at the same time.

Still, it is astonishing which models are called sports boots. The North German provider Motoport, for example, sent the model Dane Torring WP into the race. A comparatively inexpensive synthetic leather boot. The testers did not really understand where this shoe hid its sporting ambitions. Because it is comparatively light? Because he’s slim? Oh well. What is completely missing from this product, however, are grinders. If the pace is very sporty, these are actually essential, because in a corresponding incline – also on the country road – the plastic or metal pads, which are usually placed on the outside front and sometimes also at the rear, help with controlled contact with the asphalt.

Also looks pretty out of place: The W2 Strada-11.

Similar to knee sliders, they serve the overall driver / machine system for better guidance when tracking down the ideal line. Well, pure touring riders seldom seek the boot floor contact that is common on racetracks and tend to unintentionally grind the edges of their boots when riding jagged on sporty machines. The cheaply made W2, which offers relatively little protection in the event of a fall, also seems a bit out of place in the sporty environment. The massive, but also the chunky one Dainese on the other hand, it offers a lot of safety reserves, but can hardly be ridden on the delicate notches of super athletes and acute knee angles. The product managers have probably thought of the boot for the new generation of large fun bikes à la BMW S 1000 SX or Ducati Multistrada, with which you can also let it rip in a very sporty way. The other sports boots fit well into the requirement profile and are considered real athletes.

Sportiness is one thing, but what makes the sports boots presented here so versatile is their weather protection. There were only a few failures in the wet test – apparently Gore-Tex, Sympatex and the like work reliably when driving in the rain and hold tight. In the summer heat, however, the botts quickly become headlocks. In any case, even the best all-rounders cannot match the air conditioning of membrane-free sports boots. In the case of surcharges of 20 to over 50 euros to comparable boots without weather protection from the same company, you should consider whether the equipment corresponds to your own area of use before buying. As already mentioned: touring boots are the better alternative on tour, radical sports boots are best for sports. The “water sports enthusiasts” presented here offer themselves as a compromise. After all: partly as a very good one.

Personally, the boot category presented here doesn’t really open up to me. There are good and safe touring boots for touring. As anyone on a long journey would have to admit, they are much more practical and comfortable than sports boots. But they don’t look particularly sharp.

I assume many buyers: They want a cool image and the look of uncompromising supersport equipment. But want to protect yourself for every eventuality. Hey, when I’m on the last furrow, it’s mostly dry. Will I still get into the rain on the brisk lap of the country road – so what? I get wet and go home. That’s what athletes are like – not made of sugar.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Gym lesson: Curvy mountain routes are ideal to test the mobility of the boots.

Exercise-lap

How easy is it to shift gears, how well do you brake, how securely are the soles on the notches? We tested it.

Sports boots should meet two criteria well: provide security and offer mobility. How well it can be shifted and braked with the boots, how firmly the soles are on the pegs, how easily the feet can be repositioned when changing lean angles – the test drivers tested all of this on a sporty lap of country roads with sometimes very tight curve radii. All safety features of the respective equipment were carefully inspected and assessed by the MOTORRAD boot experts.

At the same time, processing, materials and handling when putting on and taking off were critically examined. To check the water resistance, the ten sports boots had to undergo a moisture test. Two test samples that had already been worn during the driving tests were exposed to an immersion bath for ten minutes. The testers poured a defined amount of water into two other worn boots per model and determined whether the boots held tight for five hours.

A very handy diagonal zipper makes it easy to put on and take off the Daytona Strive GTX.

Ambitious in sport and oriented towards tourism

If the super sporty genes of a boot are to be expressed in a tourist character, a compromise has to be found. In practice it looks very good for some details, but for others this claim flops. If, for example, dressing and undressing becomes an ordeal or major security gaps open up, then it is important to be careful!

  • Alpinestars S-MX 6 GTX: The Velcro strips cover well and interlock firmly.
  • Daytona Strive GTX: A very handy diagonal zipper makes it easy to put on and take off.

  • Sidi Cobra GTX: Screwed grinders protect the shoe well and can be easily exchanged.

  • Vanucci RV3 Sympatex: The strong hard shell protector covers the shin in an exemplary manner.

When it comes to choosing materials, only Daytona relies on expensive leather, the rest of them trust artificial leather. And still mostly offer good security.
