Glasses for motorcyclists tested (2018)
15 biker glasses in comparison
They are supposed to protect. Against airflow, UV radiation, flying insects and dangerous gravel bullets. Oh yes, they should also look cool if possible. Which of the following 15 biker glasses can best meet these high demands?
Thorsten Dentges

It doesn’t have to, but it can happen: An overtaking car throws up a small stone, which, as a result of the rotation of the tire, flies quickly, accelerating, directly into the eye of a jet helmet wearer driving behind it at a brisk freeway speed – with over 250 items. If the biker rides in this situation with or without an open visor: disaster, with bad luck the eye goes blind! Things don’t look much better if the driver wears party sunglasses that are unsuitable for the motorcycle or corrective glasses with lenses that are prone to splintering. Because even at a slow pace there is a risk of seriously injuring your face. So it makes perfect sense to wear special biker or sports goggles when riding a motorcycle, which protect you from the gravel worst-case scenario.

But insects, dust and wind can also restrict and distract the driver in such a way that the risk of falling increases significantly. And on hours of tours, it is not good for the eyes to be exposed to unfiltered and aggressive UV radiation. The question, however, is how much personal protection should be worth to one. Even if dogmatists say you shouldn’t skimp on safety, buying biker glasses is a very individual matter. Similar to helmets, gloves and boots, glasses should match your personal ergonomics as well as possible and should not be too tight, even on longer journeys. These requirements can also be met by inexpensive products. In the test, the price ranges from 14.99 euros to a proud 255 euros.

So test MOTORCYCLE
As a buyer, you can and should try out glasses extensively in the store, also in combination with the helmet. However, one still does not know whether the glasses would protect against the aforementioned gravel attack. Unless the glasses have been certified according to one of the various standards for protective glasses, such as DIN EN-166, STANAG, MIL or ANSI. In the course of this, corresponding prototypes are sometimes physically maltreated in the laboratory, for example by shooting machines or accelerated iron balls (43 grams; 1.30 meters drop height). Such a certification (to be recognized by the test marks and instructions on the packaging) is by no means binding for manufacturers of biker glasses. In online shops and on the shelves of motorcycle outfitters, for example, you can find some chic and cool copies that are unsuitable for driving.
Thorsten Dentges
The UV protection is determined with a so-called transmission meter.
When we were invited to our test, we therefore asked the providers to only send protective goggles that were really designed for normal motorcycle speeds in the comparison. An important part of the test was a test arrangement to check the splinter protection as practically as possible and comparably. For this purpose, we shot each lens with a fixed air pistol. On the basis of the exit speed, ammunition weight and distance, an approximate impact energy could be calculated, which is comparable to the gravel impact described above at motorway speed. A downpipe and gravitational force can also be used to exert a defined point energy on the lenses, whereby we have based ourselves on the requirements of DIN EN-166. Reassuring: All test candidates held up. Only the thin plastic lenses of the party glasses, which were shot at out of competition, splintered into sharp individual parts.
On some glasses, the lenses popped out during the bombardment test and the frames broke or hung off. In reality this would be annoying property damage, but the glasses would still offer sufficient protection until a stone, insect or other flying object hit. Most of the glasses also impressed with the optical quality (distortion, light wave overlap, etc.) and UV protection.
Thorsten Dentges
The driving test determined how well the test candidates sit under the helmet and how well they keep out drafts.
Wearing comfort, fit and, depending on this, wind protection were rated very differently depending on the shape of the head. Therefore, before the test drives, we had the testers set up the different models and identified weak points in advance. Incidentally, after the rides, there were similar favorites. Nevertheless, it means for buyers: There is no avoiding a personal fitting! Now for the price: the cheapest models are definitely sufficient for occasional users. Because these also provide absolutely sufficient protection. Glasses wearers who need corrective lenses, as well as puristic jet helmet drivers, shouldn’t save and rely on the qualitatively superior test winners and buying tips.
