Test MZ 125 SM
Career changers

At 16, you still have dreams. Maybe one of them will come true now. A lively supermoto motorcycle for novice drivers comes from Saxony.

The target group is clearly defined. Quotes from the prospectus of MZ 125 SM: »Really crazy. Grip, grip hurray. Hipper than hip-hop. More technical than techno. A machine that is so IN that even the way to the math course is fun. «The question arises as to whether the way over the MOTORRAD test track is also fun.
Bright blue, somehow angular and almost fully grown, the 125 is waiting to be used. The plastic parts shine as if they were painted. According to MZ, however, they are colored throughout. Good this way. Then scratches will not devalue the good piece so quickly. For 3790 euros there is surprisingly full equipment: an exhaust system made of stainless steel, a reliable electric starter and steel braided brake lines that guarantee an exact pressure point. The cockpit rounds off the impression: control lights for oil pressure, high beam, coolant temperature, idling and indicators. The speedometer, with a day trip function, goes up to 160 km / h. Let’s see if he actually has to.
Choke in and out of traffic. After 300 meters there is no need for jump starters. Nimble, the 125 cc slips through the city traffic and wins every traffic light duel against steel citizen cages. However, it requires suspiciously high speeds for the sprint. Does not matter. In no time at all, the place-name sign is behind, the expressway in front of her.
Gaaas! According to MZ, the most modern four-stroke engine in its class turns smoothly and without annoying vibrations in the limiter. At least for everyone who is used to more than 15 hp and is looking for power. A shift light or tachometer for orientation would be desirable. One consolation: the transmission, like the clutch, does its job precisely and smoothly. The last of the six gears has a kind of overdrive effect: Does it need to be engaged at around 100 km / h in order to enable the speedometer needle to jump the 120 hurdle in favorable wind conditions? at least a real 108 km / h.
In its top speed region, however, the MZ tends to oscillate gently. Then the underdamped and maneuverable chassis becomes noticeable. So back to the destination: tight turns, wide arcs, drifts to perfection. Due to the lack of engine power, the latter are only possible on extremely slippery surfaces or through targeted braking maneuvers. The little one has the best facilities for this. The double pistons bite into the pizza-sized brake disc as if it had been baked by a five-star chef. While the chassis reaches its limits in two-person operation, the braking system shows itself to be above such a load, remains easy to dose and wonderfully effective.
The SM is no turn too narrow, no lean angle too deep. However, their handling is a bit wobbly in very tight bends. This is particularly noticeable in the competition version, the 125 MX (see box). And probably at the expense of the Super Moto tires.
Despite a sober, objective review, the MZ 125 SM could fulfill many dreams. Some of the motorhome owners, a number of big city cowboys, half a billion motorcycle-hungry Chinese and some 16-year-olds. Because »the great goat makes the wave visually and is made for Macker«. That was the statement of one interviewee. What more do you want?
