Test waterproof gloves
Everything is under control
Bulky overgloves when driving in the rain are no longer relevant. Nowadays waterproof membranes keep fingers dry ?? whatever the weather. Eleven gloves with hard shell knuckle protection in the test.
Holger Hertneck
08/27/2003
Admittedly, in view of the bombastic and dust-dry summer of 2003, hardly anyone thinks of moisture protection. But the next rain will definitely come? and then every biker is happy about dry hands. In the MOTORRAD glove test, however, water resistance was only one criterion; another aspect concerned safety. Only those waterproof finger cots that are equipped with the hard shell knuckle protectors made of plastic or carbon, which have long since become fashionable in the sports sector, were tested. Not too many models meet both requirements. After all, eleven candidates met in triplicate (size ten, eleven and twelve or L, XL and XXL) at the beginning of August for a test of strength in Stuttgart.
And measuring forces was actually part of the test program? in the form of a shock absorption test. Since, in contrast to helmets (ECE standard 22.05), joint protectors (CE standard EN 1621-1) and back protectors (CE standard prEN 1621-2), there are no fixed specifications or regulations for the impact test of gloves, MOTORRAD has decided Without further ado, I thought up my own test conditions (see box on page 116).
In addition to shock absorption and watertightness, special attention was paid to the practical suitability, which was checked not least on the basis of extensive driving tests. Because it is only on the motorcycle that you can tell whether the gloves cause uncomfortable pressure points or whether the all-important grip feeling is not satisfied.
The throttle hand is particularly prone to pressure points, as it has to concentrate on pressing the throttle grip while driving and usually resting one or two fingers on the brake lever at the same time. Do not cut it with the fit or cut on the fingers, it pinches and pinches, especially in the area of the roots and tips of the fingers. Therefore, an intensive fitting is essential before buying gloves.
On top of that, of course, everyone
Biker has a different hand and finger shape and is therefore not blind to them
Buy recommendation from friends or acquaintances should trust. Too short fingers turn out to be very uncomfortable with gloves. If the specimens are still sitting satisfactorily with a relaxed hand position, when grasping the handlebars around the fingertips, it is usually too tight and unbearable in the long run.
In this regard, everyone ultimately has to find their own favorite. More important for the practical evaluation in the test were the design of the Velcro strap and cuff, the grip, the finger mobility, the general workmanship, the cuddle factor of the inner lining and the windproofness of the test subjects. All participants fulfilled the latter point without any problems. Waterproof and windproof, however, come at the expense of breathability. For summers like this year, waterproof gloves are only suitable to a limited extent, as they insulate too well due to their membrane.
Another part of the practical test related to the handling when putting on and taking off. Nothing is more annoying than an inner lining that slips out of the gloves when you take it off. The next time the finger cots are put on, it turns into an annoying game of patience. In particular the Spidi falls out of the ordinary due to this bad habit, but also Dainese and Germas tend to. A little tip for buying: moisten your hands slightly and then try to put on and take off the gloves of your choice two or three times in quick succession.
The candidates were able to achieve a maximum of 1000 points in the present glove test. 500 in the practical evaluation, 300 in the wetness test and 200 in the shock absorption. The Tech Road Leather GTX of Alpinestars right at the front, whereby in principle all test copies were more or less convincing. Even the participants in the back third have a good chance of doing better next time through appropriate improvements (e.g. attaching the inner lining or increasing the water resistance).
One last tip at the end: MOTORRAD recommends that gloves that are advertised as waterproof be subjected to a leak test immediately after purchase, for example in a water bucket, and that leaky copies be exchanged immediately at the specialist dealer as part of the guarantee. Because as already mentioned: the next rain is sure to come.

Due to their padding, they are more suitable for cool days and get a few points deducted when it comes to grip. ConclusionTop touring gloves for the transitional period, which do particularly well in the practical evaluation. An outlier in the wetness test costs an even better ranking
Alpinestars Tech Road Leather GTX
Price: 119.95 euros Provider: Telephone 0039/04235286, www.alpinestars.com Colors: blue, brown, red, black, black / gray Sizes: S to XXL Features: upper hand cowhide, lower hand Pittards (hair sheep) leather, Gore-Tex -ExactGrip membrane, carbon hard shell protector on the knuckles, Kevlar reinforcements, soft protectors on fingers and ball of the hand, doubled leather on the back of the hand, palm, thumb and ball of the hand; Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener, reflective surfaces Practical evaluation Wetness test * (300) All four gloves in the immersion and filling test absolutely tight Impact absorption * (125) Average residual force 24.82 kN Maximum value 30.43 kN Minimum value 21.4 kN Practical test * (415) Up to on the narrow fingers and a pressure point on the root of the right index finger very high practical suitability. In particular, the problem-free putting on and taking off, the good grip and the firm fit thanks to the stable Velcro straps and long cuff bring plus points. Completely waterproof, neatly processed gloves with acceptable damping values and high practicality. Deduction is only given for the slightly tight fingers and the pressure points on the roots of the fingers of the right hand
Bering Indy 2
Price: 89.99 euros Provider: Telephone 069/285494, www.bering.fr Color: black Sizes: five to twelve Features: cowhide / textile mix, BWtech membrane, carbon hard shell protector on the knuckles, soft protectors on the edge of the hand, doubled leather on the fingers, palm as well as between index finger and thumb; Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener, Primaloft inner lining, anti-slip trim on the palm, thumb and fingertips; Reflective material practical evaluation wetness test * (225) Both gloves tight during the immersion test; in the filling test one glove tight, one leaky shock absorption * (200) average residual force 9.72 kN maximum value 11.98 kN minimum value 5.61 kN practical test * (368) extremely cozy, soft wearing comfort thanks to the fluffy inner lining. However, the lining slips easily, which is at the expense of the grip feeling. There is criticism for the thumb that is too wide and the very long Velcro strap on the cuff Conclusion: Great touring gloves with very good damping values, but slight weaknesses in practice. The Indy 2 are suitable for the transition period and cold days ?? they are lined much too thickly for summer temperatures
Dainese Akron goretex
Price: 169.90 euros Provider: Telephone 0180/3246373, www.dainese.com Colors: black, black / anthracite / chrome Sizes: XS to XXL Features: cowhide, Gore-Tex membrane, techno protectors (hard plastic shells welded to the leather ) on the knuckles and finger joints, Kevlar reinforcements, soft protectors on the edge of the hand, doubled leather on the palm and between the thumb and forefinger; Leather stretch on the index finger, Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener, Thinsulate inner lining, anti-slip trim on the palm Practical evaluation Wet test * (300) All four gloves in the immersion and filling test absolutely tight Shock absorption * (110) Average residual force 28.24 kN Maximum value 30.16 kN Minimum value 24.55 kN practical test * (338) The Akron are extremely small and annoying due to the poorly attached inner lining. The length of the fingers is okay, but they are cut too tight. In addition, the cuff should be longer. Thanks to their soft lining, the Akron are more suitable for cool days. ConclusionAbsolutely waterproof, cleanly processed gloves that are comparatively small and in practice are particularly noticeable due to the insufficiently fastened inner lining
Frank Thomas Laguna
Price: 119.90 euros Provider: Telephone 06002/910391, www.jfmotorsport.de Colors: black Sizes: S to XXL Features: cowhide, Gore-Tex membrane, carbon hard shell protector on the two outer knuckles, soft protectors on fingers, back of the hand, cuff; Doubled leather on fingers, palm and between index finger and thumb; Leather stretch on the thumb, back of the hand as well as on the index and ring fingers; Velcro straps on the wrist, cuff with double Velcro fastener, aluminum thermal lining, reflective material Practical evaluation Wetness test * (300) All four gloves in the immersion and filling test absolutely tight Impact absorption * (80) Average residual force 33.57 kN, maximum value 41.06 kN, minimum value 25.62 kN practical test * (366) The Laguna belong to the transition and winter gloves because of their thick lining, which means that the feeling of grip suffers somewhat. Because of the many layers of leather on the fingers, they got too tight and were uncomfortable to press. The Laguna collects plus points for the strong Velcro straps and the tight fit. ConclusionFully waterproof, properly processed gloves for cool and cold days. Fingers cut a little too tight for driving
Germas Roy
Price: 46.90 euros Provider: Telephone 0911/635008, www.germas.de Colors: black, black / blue, black / red Sizes: XS to XXXL Features: cowhide, Hipora membrane, carbon hard shell protector on the ankles, carbon soft protectors on the fingers and back of the hand, doubled leather on the palm, back of the hand, fingers and between the index finger and thumb; Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener, light lining, reflective material Practical evaluation Wetness test * (225) Both gloves tight during the diving test; in the filling test one glove tight, one leaky shock absorption * (80) average residual force 33.01 kN maximum value 35.37 kN minimum value 28.71 kN practical test * (392) except for fingers that are a little too short, a bulky inner lining and a thumb that is too tight on the right there’s hardly any cause for complaint. We particularly like the good mobility and the tight fit. Conclusion: The properly processed and comparatively inexpensive Roy collect plus points in all criteria, but miss a better ranking due to an outlier in the wetness test and the only moderate impact test
Hein Gericke Gore Sports
Price: 79.95 euros Provider: Telephone 0211/98989, www.hein-gericke.com Color: black / silver Sizes: XS to XXXL Features: cowhide, Gore-Tex ExactGrip membrane, plastic hard shell protector on the knuckles, soft protectors on fingers and cuff, doubled leather on the back of the hand, fingers, edges of the hand, palm and between the index finger and thumb; Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener, anti-slip trim on the palm of the hand Practical evaluation Wetness test * (270) During the immersion test, one glove is tight, one after five minutes in the area between thumb and index finger is very slightly damp; Both gloves are tight during the filling test Shock absorption * (155) Average residual force 18.67 kN Maximum value 23.96 kN Minimum value 9.4 kN Practical test * (386) The gloves collect positive points through easy on and off, good grip and tight fit If you don’t cut into the roots of the fingers (especially) of the throttle hand in such an extremely uncomfortable way, a significantly better result would be possible. It’s just a shame that there are very uncomfortable pressure points on the fingers, which can spoil the driving pleasure in the long run
Hero Ceramic Tex
Price: 99.95 euros Provider: Telephone 08321/66460, www.held-biker-fashion.de Colors: black Sizes: seven to twelve Features: upper hand cow leather, lower hand Pittards (hair sheep) leather, Gore-Tex DirectGrip Membrane, GRP hard shell protector on the knuckles, Kevlar / ceramic reinforcements on the edge and ball of the hand, soft protectors on the back of the fingers and thumb, double leather between the index finger and thumb, Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener Practical evaluation Wetness test * (270) Both gloves tight during the immersion test; During the filling test one glove leak-proof, one leaking slightly in the middle finger Impact absorption * (110) Average residual force 27.69 kN Maximum value 33.78 kN Minimum value 22.56 kN Practical test * (439) The Ceramic is very comfortable to wear and has no pressure points. There is a slight deduction for the light knobs in the fingertips, otherwise they are convincing hero Ceramic in all criteria relevant to the practice Conclusion: Neatly processed gloves with outstanding properties in the practical test, above all grip, mobility and the good fit are convincing
Hero Edmonton
Price: 75 euros Provider: Telephone 08321/66460, www.held-biker-fashion.de Colors: black Sizes: seven to twelve Features: cowhide, Porelle membrane, carbon / Kevlar hard shell protectors on the knuckles, soft protectors on fingers, thumb and cuff ; Doubled leather on the back of the hand, palm, edge of the hand and fingers; Keprotec reinforcements on the knuckle and edge of the hand, Velcro straps on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener, Thinsulate thermal lining, reflective strips Practical evaluation Wetness test * (240) During the immersion test, one glove is tight, one in the area of the wrist latch is slightly leaky; Both gloves are tight during the filling test Thermal lining, which is at the expense of the feeling of grip and mobility, but only for the transitional period and winter use ConclusionNeatly processed gloves, which are particularly convincing due to their pleasant wearing comfort and good cushioning values. Due to the thick lining, only suitable for cold days
Modeka Carbon Tour
Price: 54.90 euros Provider: Telephone 02521/85030, www.modeka.de Colors: black Sizes: six to twelve Features: cowhide / textile mix, Hipora membrane, carbon hard shell protector on the knuckles and finger joints, kevlar-reinforced palm, doubled leather on the edge of the hand, Back of the hand, palm as well as between index finger and thumb, Velcro strap on the wrist, cuff with Velcro fastener Practical evaluation Wetness test * (75) During the immersion test, both gloves leak after a few seconds; During the filling test, one glove leaked, one badly leaking in the wrist area Carbon tour very pleasant. The poor performance in the wet test costs the Modeka gloves plenty of points. It’s a shame, because the Carbon Tour can keep up with the shock absorption and in the practical test
Spidi Sports Composite H2out
Price: 109.99 euros Provider: Telephone 07182/805900, www.imag-germany.deColors: blackSizes: XS to XXXLEquipment: cowhide, H2out membrane, plastic hard shell protector on the knuckles, soft protectors on the edge and back of the hand, Kevlar reinforcements, leather stretch on the wrist , Cuff with Velcro fastener, doubled leather on the edge of the hand, palm, back of the finger and between the index finger and thumb; Anti-slip trim on the palm of the hand Practical evaluation Wet test * (300) All four gloves absolutely leak-proof in the immersion and filling test Impact absorption * (80) Average residual force 33.88 kN Maximum value 36.31 kN Minimum value 32.74 kN Practical test * (317) With damp hands due to the completely loose inner lining that keeps slipping, almost impossible to put on and take off ?? almost insurmountable lumps form in each finger. A wrist strap required for a secure fit is missing, and the cuff should be a bit longer. Conclusion: Absolutely waterproof gloves, which have to give way in the practical test due to the unfixed, completely loose inner lining and the missing wrist strap and lose a better position
Wetness and laboratory test
Particularly important and highly rated criteria in the MOTORRAD glove test were tightness and good shock absorption properties.
In addition to the practical tests, in which the candidates were able to collect a maximum of 500 points, the scope of the test included two other important criteria: water resistance and shock absorption. Let’s start with the wetness test, which was carried out with two pairs of gloves per participant. First the “immersion test”: With one glove per pair, the tester dipped into a bucket of water up to just over his wrist and tested the tightness for five minutes with constant kneading movements. Earlier leaks led to the termination. The two other gloves per model had to pass the “filling test”. For this purpose, all candidates were hung up with the cuff up and filled with water up to about five centimeters below the edge. Well-made gloves do not show any water droplets on the outside even after the 30-minute test? so hold tight. On the other hand, some candidates were already dripping a few seconds after filling with water, with a maximum of 300 points. That said, for each tight glove there was 75 points. Severely leaking specimens did not receive a point. The Gore Sports from Hein Gericke and the Ceramic Tex model from Held were deducted 30 points for extremely small leaks on one glove. There was a 60 point deduction for the easy water ingress on a specimen of the Hero Edmonton. The second important test criterion was the shock absorption test of the hard shell knuckle protectors. MOTORRAD determined the values with the kind support of Viscotec on their protector test bench. The height of fall for the five-kilogram punch was set at 0.5 meters after appropriate preliminary tests. For the test, the gloves lay on the hemispherical anvil with an integrated force measuring device. Previously, MOTORRAD had to cut the pair of gloves to be tested for each participant in order to be able to fold away the palm of the hand that was not relevant for the impact tests. The test stamp then rushed twice from above onto the ankle protector for each glove. First on the area between the little finger and ring finger and then between the middle finger and index finger. MOTORRAD averaged the four hits per pair of gloves. This average value is decisive for the points scored. Attenuation rating (maximum 200 points): 200 points (P) < 11 kN; 185 P < 14 kN; 170 p < 17 kN; 155 P. < 20 kN; 140 P < 23 kN; 125 P < 26 kN; 110 p< 29 kN; 95 P < 32 kN; 80 p < 35 kN.
