Annoyed residents and scientific evaluations agree: “Noise displays” work. Even after they’re gone.

It all started in Baden-Wurttemberg in 2015, and Bavaria followed in 2017. In both countries, authorities are trying to influence the driving behavior of bikers with so-called noise or dialogue displays. A measuring device integrated in a route marker can distinguish passing motorcycles from other vehicles and anonymously measures speed and volume. The display, which is set up 70 meters behind, then shows the driver the words SLOWER, QUIETER or, in green, THANK YOU in red, depending on the measured value.

Scientific evaluations from Baden-Wurttemberg are now showing that the use of the displays is effective, and even sustainable. According to the study, there was no habituation effect. In addition, motorcycles continue to be slower and quieter on the respective sections of the route after the displays have been dismantled. This is in line with the experience of the police in Lower Bavaria, where two such displays were used for the first time at Straubing in 2017. Local residents reported a significant reduction in volume, the police said.
