The Yamaha FJR 1300 A is perfect for a week-long European tour. But what happens when you use the right touring tires for a compact tour of Corsica? Just three days are enough to push some rubber beyond its minimum shelf life. Six touring tires in a 4,000-kilometer test.

The stretch between Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio, where the two mounted gendarmes intercept us on their light enduros, is ideally suited to the 146 horses of the FJR 1300 To finally let A gallop free. But on the other hand, it was also made for the power of order to pick up tempo sinners like ripe chestnuts.

Fortunately, this time it turns out well. The Flic’s hand sign is clearly understandable internationally: Just watch out, we’re keeping an eye on you. And bang, they have disappeared again in the thicket of the island.

Yamaha FJR 1300 A with a combat weight of 290 kilograms

Off into the hinterland, into the evergreen macchia, which already in Asterix’s times offers wild boars and wild fellows and nowadays all too wild motorcyclists the best cover. But wait a minute, you can’t really go wild on the microscopic streets that criss-cross the island. Getting to 90 km / h here is already official, Monseigneur Flic! Because the area away from the wide highways is not exactly part of the parade discipline of this year’s tire test.

Yamaha’s travel flagship FJR 1300 A is more suitable as a fast-forward projector on motorways or well-developed country roads to absorb kilometers. On the barely a towel-wide single tracks in the Corsican hinterland, where one curve chases the next, the pilots feel every single one of the 290 kilograms after just a few kilometers. But we are not here for fun, we want to put the maximum on our tires, each of which has a different pair on each of the six FJRs. And in this combination of a powerful motorcycle with a full torque punch and high weight on the extremely grippy asphalt of the island. The pilots’ hands and feet barely stand still for a second: accelerate out of the curve, upshift, brake, downshift and then head straight back into the next bend. In your mind you can hear the rubbers whimpering for mercy, but there is no mercy during the tire test.

The profile has to go down, come the hell out of it!

Did the tire manufacturers suspect this and therefore hesitated when we asked for a recommendation for suitable touring tires when we were putting together the test field? Unlike in previous years, with the 1300 Yamaha, a potent thick ship finally enters the ring, which has performance and also demands performance accordingly. The manufacturer itself does not specify any tire binding for the FJR. What is allowed is what pleases, as it is loosely based on Goethe for the potent four-cylinder – the main thing is that the dimensions and speed index are correct.

Conti and Dunlop wave their hand. I beg your pardon?

Interestingly enough, some tire brands waved off our test request prematurely: They didn’t have the right tire in their range for the FJR 1300, according to Conti and Dunlop, for example. I beg your pardon? This is a classic touring motorcycle that is widely used and has a tire size of 120/70 and 180/55 in 17-inch format. It doesn’t get any easier than that. When asked, the explanation: Although Conti has a special Gran Turismo tire in its range, the Road Attack 2 GT is based on a rubber compound that is no longer entirely fresh. And the modern successor Road Attack 2 Evo with a stable C specification was not yet ready for the market at the time of the test. Dunlop itself only approves Roadsmart I for the FJR, the Roadsmart II is not recommended for the 1300 Yamaha due to internally determined shimmy problems.

We decide to take a close look at the possible handlebar flutter and of course we don’t want to do without “German technology since 1871” (original quote Conti) in the test.

Shimmy? Not an issue so far.

Place of the event: the A 81 south of Stuttgart. There is hardly any traffic in the Neckarburg section, and the perfectly flat asphalt surface ensures perfect test conditions. One FJR after the other goes out fully loaded with a pillion passenger to assess shimmy or high-speed commuting. Conclusion on the first morning of driving: no worries. Even when the gas tap is at the stop and the speedometer levels off at around 245 km / h, it remains trustingly stable on board all six Yamahas. After this small but not unimportant measurement, the bottom line is: high-speed drivers can opt for each of these six pairs of tires when they are new. The concerns initially raised by Dunlop are incomprehensible. On the contrary: The Roadsmart II almost shines in this part of the tire test. Would the A really have gone one better? We don’t believe it.

However, this measuring procedure will be repeated at the end of our wear ride, when another 3900 kilometers have nibbled on the rubber. The chapter “Stability” should still be viewed with an open mind.

Wet performance of motorcycle touring tires

Who, if not the touring riders, are usually out and about all year round in wind and weather and want to trust a tire that is not just designed for sunshine? Of course, rain does not come to order. In order to ensure comparability, this test must take place on a specially prepared route, where – in this case – constant bad weather conditions prevail. On the drive to the south of France, we therefore briefly turn west at Salon-sur-Provence, where the tire manufacturer Michelin maintains a suitably equipped test area.

Again, each pair of tires is individually at the collar, this time on a permanently watered circuit. The exercise is very easy to read in the test manual. Driving on a wet road, assessing the limit area, exploring the grip through acceleration and braking tests. In practice, of course, this is a tricky undertaking. Because if the massive load actually starts sliding in an inclined position, you have to juggle the throttle with a pretty hardy face – the live weight of 290 kilograms Yamaha FJR 1300 A don’t really make things easy!

The following applies to the border area: back for front

So it is ideal if the tire designers have designed the border area of the rubbers accordingly. Decisive basic rule: back for front. Because if the front slips away first in the curve, it will of course be much more difficult to catch the motorcycle safely. With our six test candidates, there is no complaint in this regard. Everyone first announces the end of the flagpole at the hindquarters – there is enough time for the experienced rider to steer the motorcycle back into calmer waters.

But apart from this basic exercise, the test field spreads out tremendously on closer inspection. Let’s start at the very beginning. Because it’s actually no surprise which touring tire is at the top of the rainy podium: It’s a Michelin. As with the Road 4 in the previous year, the reinforced GT version can also stir up the field on wet roads. And with a clear lead. On the test track, he drove with top values when accelerating, braking and banking even the two runners-up. Thanks to its wide limit range, it remains safely controllable in all situations. And that is why the recommendation can already be made at this point: If you are looking for the ultimate rain tire for your motorcycle, reach for the Michelin point.

The two sister companies line up behind them at a very good level. Metzeler Z8 Interact and Pirelli Angel GT share second place. They differ slightly in nuances (the Z8 brakes and accelerates better, while the Angel GT can be more sloping and is faster in corners), but overall, the test shows that both come from a development department. These two models can also be recommended without hesitation to a rider who values a high level of moisture protection for his bike soles.

Conti can hardly keep up on the wet test track

Bridgestone is doing bravely, but could still go one better overall. In any case, the Japanese reached the slide limit relatively early. Dunlop’s Roadsmart II shows a similar level of grip in terms of grip, but is noticeably more sluggish in curves than the Bridgestone T 30 Evo.

However, the Conti Road Attack 2 GT can hardly keep up in this category. On the irrigated circuit he shows by early and also very abrupt slides that he is no longer “up to date” in this performance class. As already said: Conti only sent the GT into the race with a stomach ache – now it shows: unfortunately, justifiably!

However, the successor Road Attack 2 Evo would probably not have completely turned the rating chapter on its head. In 2014, the standard version of this tire was presented in the touring tire test with the Honda CB 1000 R at the level of Bridgestone’s T 30 (the predecessor of the Evo) and Dunlop’s Roadsmart II.

The Conti hits everyone’s ears on the country road

Since the T 30 Evo has now gained a bit, we believe that the Conti Road Attack 2 Evo, which will be available soon, with a reinforced C specification, would catch up with the Dunlop at most – if necessary, the two would swap the rear seats. But nothing more. But before you theatrically reach for your handkerchief at the headquarters in Hanover: Let’s finally get to Corsica with our test team and plunge into the parade of motorcycle tires – on the winding country roads!

And here the Road Attack 2 GT is the ultimate driving force. The moderate wet performance is forgotten, on the grip-intensive department streets the Yamaha FJR 1300 A with the Conti soles literally wants to drive circles around the rest of the test field.

Metzeler still dewy after 3000 kilometers

Bike No. 2 almost greedily rushes from one corner to the next, shines with the highest steering precision and fantastic grip in all situations. Again and again you have to remind yourself that you are heaving a lush touring bike through the area and not a light naked or sport bike. This is not only reflected in the distribution of points, where the Conti clearly claims this test chapter for itself. In the subjective driver standings, too, the Conti goes straight to the hearts of the tire test crew. If there wasn’t a fixed distribution key for the constant change of vehicle – the boys would queue up in front of the Conti bike after every stop. So a clear case for a buy recommendation? Hmm, a difficult case. Because the more kilometers we unwind, the more threatening the profile of the Road Attack 2 GT is.

The fact is: After 2000 kilometers of islands, the front of the Conti is ready to be replaced. And with the rubbed-off profile, some shortcomings have to be accepted. The former joy of cornering has received a small damper due to a noticeable righting moment when braking in an inclined position.

Now the big hour of the Metzeler Z8 Interact strikes, which the rasp flooring of Corsica has left relatively unimpressed. Right from the start he knew how to impress with its neutrality on the Yamaha FJR 1300 A. After 3,000 kilometers of mileage, it is still dewy as the rests scrape over the asphalt for a final test lap above Bastia. Oops, here I come, it sounds cheeky from Munich. And whoosh, the Conti still has to share victory in the second chapter of the Landstrasse with the Metzeler. The sun is just setting over the Mediterranean as the six FJRs disappear deep into the bright yellow hull of the Corsica Ferries.

The stability has decreased noticeably?

This time not island, but trucker romance at the Neckarburg service station on the A 81. Last stop just before Stuttgart. After returning from Corsica, 1000 kilometers of motorway were rewound onto the rubbers. Exciting question at the end: Has the stability noticeably decreased? Again, every bike is set out on a tour of discovery in two-person operation with the throttle at the stop. The result: still harmless. Even the heavily worn rubber from Conti and Pirelli hold up well at high speed. But who needs that? Because Corsica has also shown us that 90 km / h is enough to have endless fun. Provided that the tires are correct.

Bridgestone’s T 30 Evo is an inconspicuous all-rounder to eat up kilometers. This goes well with its first-class stability when fully loaded. In terms of agility and wet performance, it’s more of a second choice.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Touring tires 120-70 ZR 17, 180-55 ZR 17 in the test

markus-jahn.com

A correct test must meet certain requirements. That is why we packed the six tire combinations on six identical bikes, the riders of which were switched according to a certain pattern.

The basic motorcycle for this year’s touring tire test in 120/70 ZR 17 and 180/55 ZR 17 was the Yamaha FJR 1300 A, six of which were made available to us by Yamaha Germany for the 4,000-kilometer wear test. The wet test took place on the Michelin test site in Fontagne (Salon-sur-Provence / France). And the dynamic test is about these special properties:

Handiness …

… is the steering force to tilt the machine and to keep it in line in alternating curves.

Liability / acceleration …*

… describes the lateral guidance and power transmission in corners of different speeds (wet / dry).

Steering precision …*

… in passages of different speeds with complicated curve radii. Provides information about whether the motorcycle is following the desired course, which is specified by the steering forces, or whether clear line corrections are required.

Borderline behavior …*

… stands for the controllability of the tire at the limit. Test on wet and dry roads.

Cornering stability …

… tests the build-up in (alternating) curves and on bumps. Is tested in different modes (solo / with pillion passenger) and in a great lean angle when accelerating.

Liability / inclination …*

… is the lateral guidance in maximum inclination on wet and dry asphalt. A tightrope walk that is only possible on a closed route.

Straight-line stability …

… is tested at high speed. Does the motorcycle remain stable on course or does the commuting disrupt the journey??

Setup moment …

… refers to straightening up when braking in an inclined position. This reaction must be balanced out with a counterforce (pressure) on the inside of the handlebar end.

Filling pressure in the test

2.5 bar at the front, 2.9 bar at the rear.

* The sections marked with an asterisk can be transferred to motorcycles with a geometry similar to that of the Yamaha FJR 1300 A..

Enduro, crosser, light naked bike … Right off the bat, you can think of many motorcycles that would be more fun on the curve-spiked Mediterranean island of Corsica than a stunner with 290 kilos and 146 hp four-cylinder. But the journey is the goal, and in order to get to the ferry port in Toulon in the south of France, more than 1000 kilometers must first be bluntly rolled over the German and French motorways. A Yamaha FJR 1300 driver then sits on the left buttock. Provided that the tires harmonize with the loaded load (pilot including ten-kilo equipment plus 20-kilo pack sack on the pillion seat).

The constellation of this year’s tire test has made beads of sweat on the forehead of many manufacturers. Because the heavy touring motorcycles of the style of an FJR present the rubbers on the rims with completely different challenges. Such as annoying shimmy tendencies (handlebar flutter at 60 to 80 km / h) or dangerous high-speed commuting at top speed on the motorway. On the other hand, a second carcass ply, appropriately reinforced tires, can degenerate the lively cornering that was part of Corsica’s specifications into annoying hard work. Yamaha itself does not specify any tire bindings for the FJR 1300. In other words: Everything that corresponds to the vehicle data in terms of dimensions and speed index can be upgraded. Which we ended up doing. Regardless of what concerns the tire industry has given us.

Conclusion: Contrary to all concerns raised at the beginning – basically all tires in this test on the Yamaha FJR 1300 work well across the board. And a look at the score shows that the field is amazingly closed. Only eleven counters separate the first and last placed. Frontrunner Conti has also perfectly adapted the GT version of the Road Attack 2 to the country road. The Conti-FJR can best show itself off on Corsica’s extremely tightly-gripped, winding streets. And you don’t have to worry about sufficient stability at high speed in this test.

Of course, letters from readers will follow again after this tire test. Usually connected with the indication that you have achieved a completely different mileage even with the tire pairing XY. And of course these objections are justified. There is no standardized abrasion test for motorcycle tires. In the case of car or truck tires, manufacturers can assess the wear behavior on special drum test stands. If you were to load a motorcycle tire accordingly, the values would of course be completely different from those listed here on the right. And these would not agree with those of most MOTORRAD readers either.

The top priority of our wear measurement is, of course, that the abrasion values of all six tire pairings are comparable with one another. Which is why this comparison test, which is carried out in practice (motorway, country road), is associated with considerable logistical effort and has to follow a strict scheme: six motorcycles that are perfectly matched, six drivers driving in a column. In addition, the permanent exchange of vehicles according to a fixed pattern in order to exchange even the smallest differences in driving habits.

This creates the basis for relating all six touring tires to one another. Of course, it is also crucial which routes are driven. If you unwind the most kilometers on the highway, you will easily get a five-digit mileage with almost any tire. But if you mainly drive on winding roads with an extremely grippy surface, you will have to replace some of the front tires after just 2000 kilometers.

Conclusion: The 2000 kilometers to and from the motorway are hardly a problem for a modern touring tire. But probably the 2000 kilometers in the curve jungle on Corsica. Above all, however, the powerful braking with the 290 kilo load in curves is a problem for the profiles. Which is why the Conti reached the legal limit (1.6 mm) long before the final stage. Metzeler, Michelin, Bridgestone and Dunlop, on the other hand, show good values.

Good driving characteristics in wet conditions are essential for a modern touring tire. Because who – if not the drivers from FJR & Co. – are you out and about on your long-haul car regardless of wind and weather? For the tire designers, the touring tire category poses a particular challenge. In principle, this is where the egg-laying pig is in demand: crisp driving fun on the country road, durability for the tour to the North Cape and back – and excellent grip in the wet. In order to make the latter possible, however, losses usually have to be accepted elsewhere. For example, high mileage and good wet grip are usually in stark contrast to each other. Silica has asserted itself as a miracle cure in modern tire construction. It replaces soot in the rubber compound and ensures more suppleness, especially at low temperatures. And that’s exactly what happens when driving on wet roads. If the rubbers heat up to 40 to 60 degrees under ideal conditions (dry road surface in summer), they only reach half that when wet. Another important aspect of tire construction is the design of the limit area: Sliders should be able to monitor themselves (and above all at the back first!) So that the driver can react in good time.

Conclusion: What Bayern Munich is in the Bundesliga, Michelin is in the final table of the wetness test: great! Metzeler and Pirelli can still keep up to some extent, but Bridgestone, Dunlop and above all Conti are clearly falling behind.

Of course everyone knows the wow factor of new tires. Once the best skin has worn off, the once superb driving characteristics suddenly decrease dramatically. If you change the tire with these last impressions in your head, you will suddenly find even a stubborn wooden tire a relief. But that is an aha experience that has been put into perspective really quickly.

The measuring process in the MOTORRAD tire test is now unique worldwide, in which the tire pairings are assessed not only when they are new, but also when they are increasingly worn. Basically nothing changes in the general adhesion of the tires, even if they have come close to the wear limit or even fall below the legally prescribed minimum profile. The same applies to behavior in the limit area or cornering stability. Here, too, the tires retain their original character. Depending on the tire model, the mileage mainly nibbles on the points of maneuverability, steering precision, straight-line stability or set-up moment. However, in different ways, which is why some places are swapped in this chapter.

Conclusion: Despite his heavy loss of profile, Conti can just claim first place in the country road classification after 4000 kilometers. However, he now has to share the top podium with Metzeler. The Z8 Interact gave much less of its good driving characteristics. The Angel GT also has to give a little more feathers due to a noticeable shimmy. Bridgestone’s T 30 Evo, on the other hand, was hardly impressed by the wear and tear. It degrades relatively moderately and is now level with the Angel GT in the final table.

At this point we move all the facts, measured values, data recording curves and test recordings aside and switch completely to the Popometer. After 4,000 kilometers, the drivers can now choose their personal favorites themselves. This purely subjective award ceremony was, of course, dominated by what felt like two million Corsican curves, which were milled off under ideal conditions (no rain, sunny and warm in summer). And none of the test drivers was able to make it into the official final ranking before their vote! The surprise now follows?
