Michael Dunlop wants to win at the Tourist Trophy 2019 … and at Pikes Peak !
Devastated last summer by the disappearance of his brother William, Michael Dunlop decided to resume competition in 2019. His program is full: in addition to the traditional road races (Tourist Trophy and Co), the North Irish rider s’ will line up for the first time at Pikes Peak ! Explanations.
After his uncle Joey in 2000 and his father Robert in 2008, Michael Dunlop lost his older brother William on July 7, who also died from a fall on a motorcycle. The guy may be very, very strong (), he is no longer ridden on a motorcycle all year 2018…
"I sent the motorcycles out for a ride and bought a nightclub", our colleagues from the. "I just bought a plane and I’m flying a bit: I’m having a bit of my midlife crisis", summed up the one who will celebrate his 30th birthday on April 10…

But neither the watered festivals – their management, especially? – nor the little circles in the – seventh? – Heaven did not ultimately succeed in erasing road racing from Michael Dunlop’s mind. That’s why he decided, with the support of his brave mother Louise, to take the handlebars again this year. !
"It’s time to come back, stronger and better than ever," warns the man with 18 victories in the Tourist Trophy. Last year again, the northern Irishman won three times on the Isle of Man in three different categories: in a BMW S1000RR and Honda CBR600RR, then in a Paton S1-R.
For this new 2019 road racing season (first big meeting in mid-May with the North West 200), Michael Dunlop has reformed his MD Racing team: "I have a solid team and a bunch of great guys, some who come back with me this year and other newbies! "
At the Tourist Trophy on the new S1000RR
The day before yesterday, Michael announced to his Facebook "friends" another exciting piece of news: "unable to nab a woman, a date or even a 06, on the other hand I nab my new motorbike;): ‘)", he said with a self-deprecating "so British".
"We are driving the new S1000RR K67 (2019 model, editor’s note) this year, which means that we are going to spend a few long evenings to prepare all this as quickly as possible", specifies "Mister D" who aims above all for victory in Superbike and "Senior TT" races.
If the MD Racing Team will take care of the Supersport (R6) and Superstock (S1000RR) machines alone, he plans to work on his BMW Superbike in collaboration with the prestigious Tyco team … the team that officially runs Peter Hickman, on Snaeffel Mountain !
In addition to "Hicky", "MD" will have to fight against a new generation of drivers: the young and hot Dean Harrisson especially, but also the impressive rookie Davey Doyle. The old ones will also be faithful to the appointment: John McGuinness – if he manages to line up his "big" Norton 1200! -, Ian Hutchinson, Conor Cummins, James Hillier, etc.
Finally, Michael Dunlop has also announced that he will participate this year and for the very first time in another famous motorcycle road race: the vertiginous hill climb of Pikes Peak. The Northern Irish pilot leaves his land to conquer Colorado (USA) !
Race to the clouds
Just a few days after the 100th edition of the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, the BMW driver will tackle the wavy ribbon of American asphalt. "This race includes 156 turns spread over a 12-mile route (19.93 km to be exact, Editor’s note), on the sides of a 14,000-mile mountain" (4302 m, Editor’s note).
Michael does not yet indicate with which bike he intends to take up this new challenge. As competition is prohibited for Superbike category machines, he will not be able to line up with his new S1000RR. , Chris Fillmore demonstrated that "small" motorcycles can compete with big ones…
On his 790 Duke, the official KTM rider had in fact finished only 5 seconds behind the winner (Carlin Dunne on Ducati Multistrada) and 4 seconds behind his comrade Rennie Scaysbrook on 1290 Super Duke R. Which machine will therefore choose "MD "? Stay connected !
