Tourist Trophy - TT 2012: the wall of 100 mph crossed on an electric motorcycle! -

The Isle of Man hosted the Tourist Trophy race for electric motorcycles on Wednesday. For the first time in four editions, the symbolic average of 100 mph is exceeded! MotoCzysz rider Rutter wins ahead of McGuinness and his Mugen.

Last year, Michael Rutter came close to the € 156 million 10,000 pounds sterling prize pool promised by the Isle of Man government to the team that would complete the Tourist Trophy route at an average of 100 mph (161 km / h) at the controls of an electric motorcycle…

Riding again this year his MotoCzysz, the forty-something wanted not only to improve his performance of 2011 (99.6 mph) but also to beat a "rookie" registered in this very young category: a certain John McGuinness…

Some Site readers may remember it: It was in 1957 that Robert McIntyre broke the 100 mph wall (nicknamed the "Ton" in English) on his Gilera 500cc 4-cylinder. The race was then contested over eight laps and motorcycles equipped with additional fuel tanks did not need refueling. !

Wednesday’s Zero – for "zero emissions" – race, open to electric motorcycles, took place over a single lap, with the batteries still having room for improvement in efficiency. But the feat remains impressive and will go down in history: 55 years after "Bob", Michael Rutter completed the Isle of Man tour at more than 167 km / h (104.1 mph exactly) !

"The greatest motorcycle riders and brands have made history thanks to the Tourist Trophy races and I am proud to add the name of Segway Racing MotoCzysz to this list," said Rutter upon arrival..

Mark Miller’s victory in the E1pc in 2010 had, however, already allowed the brand to make a name for itself: 99 years after Indian’s historic treble, MotoCzysz became the second American manufacturer to win in an official race of the Tourist Trophy !

"What the team has accomplished today is truly stunning and represents the culmination of years of hard work," insists the British driver who has not had it easy this year … Because if the field of this fourth edition of the TT Zero had only a handful of riders – four at the finish -, we still noted the presence of John McGuinness, already winner at the start of the week of the TT Superbike and Superstock races (read) !

Engaged in the Mugen team – Japanese preparer of Honda motorcycles and cars -, the "King of the Mountain" finished "only" second, but he also maintained an average above 100 mph (just like the third, Mark Miller).

According to McGuinness, the potential of his new toy is enormous: "there is much more to be expected from this bike, I was only using 50% of the available energy because the priority was to finish the race", revealed- it wednesday night.

It was not until the level of Bungalow that John granted himself 10% more capacity: "it was going well: by pressing the button a little earlier I could have perhaps been able to get closer".

"Since my first ride on the motorcycle at Motegi, I have enjoyed every lap done on his handlebars", assures the CBR tamer: "so it’s nice to get on the podium and slip between the two MotoCzysz".

The second man record-breaking TT victory – behind Joey Dunlop – clearly enjoyed the experience and is not content with just fine words about this new type of competition: "I’m sure we’ll be back next year for a new one. good trip ". To be continued on Site: stay tuned !
