TT 2017: Michael Dunlop on the new Suzuki GSX-R1000 !
Michael Dunlop remains loyal to the Hawk Racing team in 2017, but trades his S1000RR for a completely revised GSX-R1000 for 2017. Will the winner of the two Superbike rounds of the Tourist Trophy 2016 be able to beat Ian Hutchinson, who remained on BMW? ?! Suspense…
Never change a winning team ? Really ? Michael Dunlop,, is not – entirely – of this opinion: for 2017, he chose to renew his confidence in the Hawk Racing team … but changes his bike !
In the "queen" category of Superbike, the son of the late Robert Dunlop – and nephew of the legendary Joey Dunlop – will no longer ride on one but on the brand new, which Site was lucky enough to discover in Australia.
- MNC Suzuki GSX-R1000R 2017 test :
"I’m back in the Dream Team for a new tour," says Michael. “The Suzuki might be a new bike, but that’s no excuse for those who get beaten. I won in my first year on the BMW. What matters is what you do. on the bike "…
Site readers – who, as everyone knows, have a little more RAM than others – remember that Michael Dunlop had dominated the three 1000 cc races of the 2014 edition at the controls of the S1000RR, giving "Behem" his !
But MNC readers also know that the phenomenal Northern Irish pilot had not experienced the same success passing on the last generation of in 2015: disappointed, even, he had preferred to play it safe – so to speak – in himself. finally entering a BMW, unofficial and prepared by itself.
In 2017, Michael Dunlop will have almost factory pilot status as he will have the support of Yoshimura, in addition to that of the team led by Steve Hicken – who will line up, by the way, the GSX-R1000 from Taylor. Mackenzie (British Superstock 1000 champion) and Sylvain Guintoli ("Cock-a-doodle-do!") In British Superbike this year.
The GSX-R1000: best Superbike … on the road ?!
As much appreciated by fans as feared by his opponents and employers for his outspokenness, Michael admits that he is not completely at ease: "I am worried but very enthusiastic at the idea of trying this brand new machine. With the support from the Yoshimura factory, I fully intend to continue my success from last year ", he wrote on his official website.
The task promises to be particularly difficult for the one that the Journal moto du Net nicknamed MD17, compared to his record around the Snaeffel Moutain: "Less than 17 minutes", a feat that he is currently the only one to have executed…
Carefully orchestrated by the kind organizers of the Tourist Trophy, which will pit Michael Dunlop against his best enemy Ian Hutchinson – who remains on his S1000RR prepared by the Tyco BMW team – wins in substance. Without forgetting that will also be in the ring with the news !
Senior Suzuki officials will closely follow Michael Dunlop’s performances: Hamamatsu’s last TT victory in the Superbike category dates back to May 31, 2008. The Australian Cameron Donald then took advantage of the retirement of John McGuinness and Guy Martin (both on Honda) to claim a big win ahead of two other GSX-Rs driven by Bruce Anstey and Adrian Archibald !
Three days later in Superstock 1000, Mister Donald gave the "Gex mille" his last victory in the Tourist Trophy, this time beating John McGuinness and Guy Martin (still on Fireblade) by around fifteen seconds on a regular basis. Suzuki thus won its 110th victory (against 232 for Yam ‘and 256 for Honda).
Suzuki is also third in the podium standings, tied with Norton (321 each) but far behind Honda (677) and Yamaha (767). For the record, Norton will defend his place dearly with his SG6 V4, derived from the SS and piloted by pilots Josh Brookes and David Johnson…
Finally, the program of Michael Dunlop and his GSX-R1000 is not limited to the only Superbike races of the next Tourist Trophy: they will also participate in the North West 200, the Southern 100 and the Grand Prix Ulster … as well as in the first round of the BSB Championship which will take place in Donington Park the first weekend of April. To be continued on MNC: stay connected !
Official statements
Steve Hicken, Team manager Bennetts Suzuki:
“We have known Michael for a long time and we wanted to work with him again this year, so we are really happy that we were able to make this deal together. We are already well advanced in the preparation of the new GSX-R1000, and we know that the potential is there. With a big name like Michael on the handlebars, there’s no reason we can’t win races straight away. That’s the goal! "
Michael Dunlop:
“I had been in discussion with Steve for a while. We’ve worked together a lot in the past, but it was a little different with the arrival of this new bike. We needed to take stock of what could be being realized and our respective situations. I know Steve and Stuart, as people, and I know they can take delivery of a new bike and do something right with it. It’s a good team and there is a good link with Yoshimura. It’s going to be interesting this year. I helped the team build my own bikes and it will be good to ride with them for the first time in Mallory before going to Spain ".
