Everything you need to know about the new 2019 BMW R1250GS
BMW unveils in advance its new R1250GS and R1250RT 2019, which release as planned an unprecedented variable distribution on their engine whose displacement goes from 1170 to 1254 cc. The other evolutions mainly concern electronics and some practical aspects. Presentation.
Diffusion – accidental? – forcing BMW to anticipate its presentation within a month of the "home" show in Cologne (Germany), where the benchmark for maxi-trails should logically have entered. And for good measure, the propeller brand unveils at the same time the new R 1250 RT which also inherits a new Variable Timing Boxer (presentation to follow on MNC).

The trail as the road, flagship of the Bavarian brand, release a new generation of engine, six years after having adopted mixed air and water cooling. This new "fleet-twin", the main evolution of this 2019 vintage, goes from a displacement of 1170 to 1254 cc via an increase in the bore (from 101 to 102.5 mm) and the stroke (from 73 to 76 mm).
This increase in displacement of "+ 7%" would offer it "14%" of torque and "9%" of additional power, according to the calculations of the Munich engine manufacturers who announce a shift from 125 hp and 125 Nm on the "GS" 2018 to 136 hp and 143 Nm on the 2019. This leap forward – the Behème is approaching the 160 hp of one or one – will further strengthen the revivals of the German twin, which was already not lacking.
But the particularity of this engine, which inherits the status of “the most powerful BMW Boxer ever produced”, is mainly due to its unique variable valve timing: a first on a BMW motorcycle (the brand uses this technology on its cars). This system called "ShiftCam" varies the control times and valve lift at the intake, in order to improve the cyclic regularity of the twin and reduce its consumption..
This technology is based on an intake camshaft with two cams per valve: a so-called "partial load" cam – which generates more economical operation – and a "full load" cam which gives full power to the engine. These cams have for this purpose a different geometry, which varies the lift and the opening time of the intake valves..
Switching from one cam to the other is done by means of a "switching slide" located on the camshaft and an electromechanical activator, depending on the load demanded on the engine and its speed. This ShiftCam would generate better mechanical efficiency over the entire speed range – a point difficult to verify since the displacement increases – and consumption down by "4%".
Other interesting advantages: a better cyclical regularity makes it possible to lower the idle speed "of 100 rpm", calculates BMW which also announces benefits in terms of "sound comfort" … which is relevant in the as MNC considers the sound of the German twin a little too aggressive and metallic since its passage in the water in 2013.
The last advantage of this variable valve timing is a system that Ducati also uses on its: its ability to reduce pollutant emissions, a welcome characteristic for meeting future Euro5 standards which are looming for 2020..
Finally, the camshaft drive now uses a toothed chain – roller chain in 2018 – while the oil circuit would be "optimized" and the injectors have a split jet. All, of course, for the benefit of performance and undoubtedly reliability.
The exhaust line would also be redesigned, although this modification is difficult to detect on the visuals of the press kit: the 2019 R1250G looks furiously like a… 2018 R1200GS, from the shape of its LED optics to its sharp scoops, through its rear frame screwed to the front part !
Identical cycle part
This resemblance is confirmed by detailing the technical sheet of the novelty 2019, which shows a cycle part and peripherals identical to the previous model. The engine still has a load-bearing function within the tubular trellis frame, while the damping carries over the traditional Telelever at the front and a mono-shock at the rear.
The important suspension travel – 190 mm and 200 mm – has not moved a millimeter and the final transmission remains entrusted to a cardan shaft via the Paralever single-sided swingarm. Braking is based on powerful 4-piston radial calipers. In short, the new "Gehesse" retains its fundamentals: in view of its formidable efficiency, who will complain? ?
On the other hand, as with each of its evolutions, the silhouette of the queen of the maxi-trail segment is growing in places: its wheelbase increases for example from 1507 to 1525 mm, probably to improve its stability and traction. As for its weight, it climbs from 244 to 249 kg in running order !
This increase of 5 kg is to be blamed on the mechanical evolutions and the additional weight of the variable distribution system, as well as the additional adjustments made in 2019. And to say that this "good old GS" from 2012 and its air cooling. oil weighed 229 kg, or 20 kg less! The supernatural balance of the "GS" – generated by the flat architecture of the Boxer – will not be able to forever compensate for this continual weight gain….
A little extra standard, a lot optional
The 2019 R1250GS is also illustrated by its endowment, with standard "Full LED" lighting and the new 6.5-inch TFT dashboard previously offered as an option. This complete, readable and intuitive instrumentation – also available on the and – connects to a smartphone or a Bluetooth headset and also has a practical simplified GPS function. To date, Site’s faith, it is the best on the market.

As in 2018, the German motorcycle comes standard with traction control without tilt sensor (ASC) and only two riding modes: Rain and Road. The passage through the "options" box is required to take advantage of the additional finesse on the angle of Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and additional driving modes (Dynamic, Enduro and Enduro Pro, which is activated with a coding card for "muscular" off-road trips).
Good prince, BMW agrees to install the hill start assist as standard, equipment of interest in loaded duos, as well as off-road in certain perilous portions! However, the brand keeps its optional "dynamic" brake light – which flashes more or less rapidly depending on the intensity of the braking – and its automatic call system in the event of a problem (eCall). Too bad, in view of their interest in security.
Small disappointment also by discovering the optional nature of a new device released on the 1250: Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), a braking assistance system which assists the ABS to further slow down the motorcycle by intervening on the engine brake. If necessary, this DBC can reduce the power transmitted to the rear wheel during heavy braking, to prevent inadvertent blocking.
The maxi-trail across the Rhine makes up for it thanks to its many practical aspects, such as its very efficient windshield height adjustment wheel, its well-designed Multi-controler for navigating its instrumentation or its adjustable saddle height. from 850 to 870 mm without tools (low saddle at 800 mm and high at 900 mm available).
- MNC of September 26, 2018 :
Finally, the suspension with electronic calibration ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) is still not installed as standard despite a selling price that starts, up 900 euros compared to the current model which appears at 16,500 euros since its application. last september.
Remember that in its latest version "Next Generation", the controlled damping of the GS is able to automatically adjust the rear preload – the front is fixed in the factory – according to the load on the bike (solo, duo, suitcases or not ). The hydraulics evolve continuously according to the state of the road, the driving style and the driving mode engaged, thanks to microvalves which accelerate or reduce the oil flow in the suspensions.

Already HP and Exclusive versions
The new 2019 R1250GS is available in black and gray or blue and gray, as well as in an "Exclusive" version with black paint underlined by a few gold touches (calipers and inscriptions on the tank). A last variation, the R1250 "HP" – the old Rally -, sees its off-road connotation underlined by tangential spoke rims (still in 19 and 17 "), white, blue and red colors and a short bubble.
As in 2018, the GS can also receive a whole lot of high-quality parts from the "BMW Motorrad Spezial Option 719" collection including levers, mirrors, footrests or a cylinder head cover milled from a block of aluminum.
