A photo "stolen" by our colleagues on Road Trip confirms the existence of a new trail in preparation at Suzuki, on the excellent basis of the aging V-Strom. Some features can be interpreted as a return of the famous DR800 "Big DR" from the 1990s… MNC explores the tracks.

A "Big DR" in the sauce? The recipe has made more than one salivate since the launch of, to the point of having inspired several photomontages likely to embody the return of the legend of the 90s … And here is a prototype surprised by our colleagues from Road Trip further fuel the debates !

  • MNC Live : A Suzuki Big DR based on V-Strom 1000
  • MNC test : Suzuki V-Strom 1000 XT 2017, a super cost !
  • MNC special file :

Such a motorcycle would make sense for Suzuki: this hypothetical "DR-Strom" would dust on the one hand the DL1000 V-Strom, as valiant as it is accessible but not dated. On the other hand, the nostalgia linked to a famous name is a powerful marketing lever: the proof with the Honda or the Suzuki, the return of which is much talked about..

However, it is an understatement to say that the DR800S is a striking model: this trail launched in 1987 in 750 format obtained in 1990 the qualifier of "biggest single cylinder in the world" with its reboring to 779 cc! This motorcycle nicknamed "Big DR" is also famous for its famous rectilinear "duckbill" under the front optic, copied many times afterwards..

With its enormous "gromono", the coat of arms of Hamamatsu thumbed its nose at the generalization of the twin cylinder in the emerging category of "maxi-trails": it was a motorcycle of diehards, who did not care about the constraints linked to its architecture like its vibrations, its limited availability and its performance behind a twin.

Bringing it back 22 years after its release from the catalog, in 1997, would undoubtedly make an impression while giving new life to the rally-raid accents to the Suzuki trail range. Enough to give some pep to an offer lacking renewal in recent years !

Return of the "DR" or evolution of the "DL" ?

Be careful, however, not to get carried away … Certainly, Suzuki is working on a new trail, as evidenced by the photo below published by Road Trip where two motorcycles are easily identifiable as developing models with their motley black and white camouflage. . Astonishing choice of paint, on this subject, since it identifies the novelties as soon as they leave the factory. !

This shot, probably taken in Italy, actually shows a trail with high volumes, powered by a V-twin like that of the DL1000 V-Strom. Close examination reveals the presence of a final chain drive, radial calipers and a generous bubble – probably adjustable.

The “DR” theory of inspiration is accredited by the rectangular format of the optics, unlike the contested oblong headlight of the V-Strom. Some also believe that its prominent beak would be another indication of Suzuki’s intention to marry "DR" and "DL"…

The next V-Strom 2020 ?

Except that the current V-Strom is also decked out with this generous "siskin" associated with adventurous motorcycles! In addition, the rims with sticks in road tires, the absence of handguards and shoe as well as the suspension travel a priori limited do not fit into the all-terrain register supposed to accompany the return of the name " DR ".

This new bike actually looks like two drops of water like … a reworked DL1000 V-Strom, still faithful to its road philosophy (above in "XT" version)! We can even bet that its changes will then benefit the V-Strom 650, stylistically identical to the 1000.

It remains to be seen how the twin-cylinder open at 90 ° has been reworked with a view to the Euro5 standards planned from 2020 – and what will be the impact on its performance (101 hp currently). Hopefully a little diet and a softer saddle will also accompany the aesthetic changes. !
