Let us distinguish a new special series at Triumph, as often reserved for the Bonneville. Remember the “Tag Heuer”, “Sixty”, “Steve Mc Queen”, “Newchurch” and so many others. This time to honor Bud Ekins. One of the advantages of this kind of tribute, in addition to the exclusive aspect for the owners, is to discover certain characters. Often famous, sometimes beyond the motorcycle circle; occasionally only known to fans and insiders. James Sherwin “Bud” Ekins is one of them, while his past commands respect.
The 1200, and the 900, are ennobled by its name. The big one has more torque, more watts, more emotions in the pistons. But when it comes to design and ceremonial costume, both present with the same delicacy. Pearly white silk dress, borrowed from a burgundy praline umbrella. A suppleness for the eyes, which each one adapts to its own sauce. The colors are reversed depending on whether you are facing the T100 or the T120.
Two colors for the memory? Let’s not stop there, it would be too much to reduce the gesture. Triumph plunges curiosity into details so that enthusiasts seek them out, appreciate them, get inspired by them and breathe them out during the rides. Even more in front of friends and congresses. The 1200 Bonneville Bud Ekins features bar end mirrors, specific grips, a Monza-style fuel cap, LED indicators and special badges on the crankcases. For presentations.
The most important would not it be in its stickers showing a winged globe, symbolic attached to California, with the mention Bud Ekins? They are installed on the tank and the front fender. For the occasion, Triumph brought out one of its vintage logos from the boxes. The one used for more than half a century. He lives again on the 900 and 1200 special edition Ekins, the time of a kiss on the walls of the tank.
But no, the most important thing is certainly in the metal. In this parallel twin cylinder cubing 1.2 liters to get out 80 horsepower. Not huge considering the displacement but enough torque and character to spin with vigor and panache. The muscle is there, present at will and round like an armed fist.
This Bonnie also benefits from two Riding Modes, a traction control, a daytime light signature, a USB socket, a duo of 310 mm brake discs, a neat finish and a price of a certain consequence. For this special series, the manufacturer is not too greedy and claims 400 euros more than for the standard 1200 Bonnie. This extension includes the decoration, accessories, and a certificate of authenticity accompanied by a small book telling the history of the pilot celebrated here. To validate this pedigree, it will be signed by the daughters Ekins, Susan and Donna, as well as by the CEO of Triumph, Nick Bloor..
What about Bud in all of this? Here is the real solemnity of this Bonneville. Ekins, he was a true off-road star, the biggest American Triumph dealer of the 1960s and a talented stuntman..
Born in Los Angeles in 1930, Bud Ekins learned to pilot in the nearby Hollywood Hills and worked on his off-road piloting skills long before he was of legal age to walk the roads. Luckily, California was home to a thriving network of off-road circuits, and by his late teens Ekins was already known as one of Southern California’s top motocross and desert racers..
In 1956, in California, Ekins completed the 246 km of the “Big Bear Hare and Hound” in 2nd place; he won the same race the following year, where Triumph won most of the best places.
Subsequently, Ekins opened a Triumph dealership in North Hollywood. He quickly attracted many promising young actors, including Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood. Despite the involvement of running a successful Triumph dealership, Ekins continued to compete and found success in several off-road races, including the Hare and Hound, Mint 400 and Baja 1000 (which he helped create). McQueen often joined him.
Ekins being a very esteemed rider, who has already represented the United States in the highly publicized competition that is the ISDT, the Motorcycle Olympics, he brought McQueen into the American team for his famous participation in ISDT 1964 in East Germany. Ekins will end up winning no less than four ISDT gold medals in seven years.
Ekins’ competitive success and friendships opened up a new career for him. While his exceptional jump in “The Great Escape” became the most famous motorcycle stunt in cinema, his stunt skills were increasingly in demand. He was considered one of Hollywood’s best and continued for almost 30 years.
