When in 1992, the Hinckley factory embarked on the design of the big trail which is sorely lacking in its reborn but ambitious range, it faces two problems. Triumph has built its new range on a policy of extreme rationalization. Thus, 90% of the parts are identical on a Trident, a Trophy or a Daytona.. This industrial policy is effective, but somewhat restricts the possibilities of designers. In addition, the wholesale trail market is the subject of fierce competition and the British brand must be able to place itself in an original way if it establishes itself in this niche..
Having to compose with their catalog of parts and their in-house engine, the engineers designed a big trail whose particularity would be to be the most road, the biggest, the most powerful….
The Tiger is presented in 1993. It uses the 3-cylinder 885cc which very quickly imposed itself. However, Triumph is forced to make a major departure from its rationalization policy. Because if the frame remains close to that of road, suspensions, wheels and complete trim are specific to the Tiger. It would have been difficult to do otherwise.
The engine is also adapted to its new case. It is thawed at 85 horsepower but in return gets a better torque curve, in order to give the big trail a breath that no one else can boast. The result is eloquent: the Tiger passes 200 km / h at top speed and sticks a good second to the Yamaha Super Tenere on a 400m standing start (1.5 seconds for the 750 AfricaTwin). The character of the 3 cylinders is respected and its road origins bring new blood to the category, still under the yoke of the Dakars Replicas.
Because it must be admitted, this newcomer does not play in the court of the tenors of the segment. The Tiger has no intention of going to wear out his crampons outside the asphalt. He is dedicated exclusively to the road and prefers to wear a sober dress rather than a multitude of advertising stickers. This bike is in fact one of the inspirers of the GT trail fashion, today represented by the BMW R 1200 GS, Suzuki V-Strom or Honda Varadero.
However, the Tiger remains a trail. And if it has the advantages (upright and relaxed position, comfort of the long-travel suspensions, very stable cycle part), it is also not exempt from the recurring weaknesses of the category (saddle height, high center of gravity). perched, …). Especially since with more than 257 kg with full tanks, it is advisable to be careful when maneuvering at a standstill or at very low speed..
However, once in the saddle, this big trail knows how to be agile and lively thanks to the resumptions of its engine. And the Tiger is never as comfortable as when exiting a curve for the pilot’s greatest pleasure: An ultra versatile toy, capable of traveling (heavy riders will add a high bubble to it) and of arousing.
The Tiger will undergo small modifications over the years. A new luggage rack here, a new clutch or a Showa fork there, will allow it to keep up with the competition which continues to sharpen its models (in particular the BMW R 1100 GS released in 1994). In 1999, the big Triumph will be entitled to a major overhaul in order to continue its magnificent trail GT career (see 900 Tiger 1999-2001).
