Tips for buying used

With air-cooled two-cylinder engines, Triumph cites the glorious sixties from 2001 onwards. In 2004 the Triumph Thruxton 900 appeared as a sporty offshoot. How can the twin hold its own when used?

Jorg Lohse

02/16/2017

If there’s any kind of senior officer in our scene, it’s the Thruxton driver. Because he has to be aware that he is always addressed by older men and women everywhere: “My father used to drive one too. But yours still looks really good! ”The Thruxton driver could leave it at that with a quiet smile. Or he will enlighten you! That there has actually been a Triumph Thruxton before. Based on the Bonneville victories in the 500 miles on the Racetrack in Thruxton (England), the Production Racer appeared in 1964 for everyone: the T 120 R Thruxton with double carburetors and a remarkable 53 horsepowers. With the triumph decline in the 70s (and the bankruptcy in 1983) much was forgotten. Until the good old days were taken up again in 2001.

Triumph relaunch took place in 1991

The Bonneville will be the first model with an air-cooled 790 cm³ twin. But after the successful Triumph relaunch in 1991, with modern and characterful three-cylinder engines and finally the identity-creating Speed Triple, it is questionable whether another box-office hit will succeed with a first-class old-school look but poor performance. The Triumph Thruxton, as one of the many Bonneville offshoots, is a bit thick with a small increase in displacement (865 cm³) and correspondingly more power (69 instead of 60 hp). Nevertheless, the blandly tuned engine remains an emotion killer, and the simply knitted chassis with the tendency to stir and the slack brakes do not encourage you to want to repeat the sporting successes of the original Thruxton from the sixties. But you don’t really have to.

Do you really need more reasons?

The Triumph Thruxton belongs to the class of motorcycle that puts the famous grin on your face. With a swing across the street, to a cigarette at the meeting point, with a beer in the evening in front of the garage and also with a coffee chat with grandma and grandpa on the edge of the pedestrian zone. In any case, she is at the forefront of the belly rating. Do you really need more reasons?

The market situation

Manageable and expensive. That would be the catchphrase for trading the Triumph Thruxton. Particularly attractive: well-equipped demonstrators.

Triumph Thruxton from 5,500 euros

Low price level

The first Triumph Thruxton models, which have been around for ten years and more, are stubbornly staying above the 5,000 euro mark. It is interesting, however, that the injectors will also be offered from 2008 with high mileage under six million.

Sample ad: Triumph Thruxton with 14,250 km, EZ 3/2005, yellow / silver, new HU, 1st hand, minor damage to the side cover and exhaust from falling over, 5,999 euros (dealer offer from Bavaria)

Triumph Thruxton from 7,000 euros

Medium price level

In the over 7,000 league, the gap to the former new price is already quite small. Many offers therefore want to score with numerous extras (e.g. rear modifications) or dynamic upgrades (e.g. chassis kits). The condition is mostly flawless, the mileage is low.

Sample ad: Triumph Thruxton with 6,000 km, EZ 3/2005, in red, new HU when purchased, 1st hand, full service history, subtle rear conversion, Wilbers struts, mini indicators, Shark exhaust, 7,200 euros (private seller from Saxony-Anhalt)

Triumph Thruxton from 8,000 euros

High price level

If you want to sell Triumph Thruxton as a private provider in this league, you have to throw some extras into the balance. Because as strong competitors, dealers attract here with almost new demonstrators.

Sample ad: Triumph Thruxton with 5,018 km, single room 7/2015, in green, new HU when purchased, 1st hand, full service history, extensive accessories, three-year remaining guarantee, due to bad purchase (too sporty sitting posture) VB 8,530 euros (private seller from Lower Saxony)

Dealer interview with Janine Gatzsch

Janine Gatzsch (36) has been working for the authorized dealer Q-Bike Technik for over ten years (www.q-bike.de) in Hamburg. This is what the seller says about the Triumph Thruxton 900.

MOTORCYCLE: The Triumph Thruxton is clearly a vehicle for enthusiasts. Where do the typical lovers of the air-cooled twin come from??

Janine Gatzsch: In any case, they are classical music enthusiasts who come from all corners of our scene. Many Triumph fans, of course, but also drivers from other brands will eventually target the Thruxton. Unlike the Bonneville or the Scrambler, the Thruxton primarily appeals to dynamic types of drivers. Technically, of course, a lot is identical, but the sporty seating posture makes the difference, which is why you ultimately choose the Triumph Thruxton.

MOTORCYCLE: So the typical Thruxton customer is sporty, but also over 50 …

Janine Gatzsch: With the appearance of the new water-cooled 1200 Thruxton from 2016, the generational change is particularly evident. The classic enthusiasm in the motorcycle scene is initially across all ages. But the younger “over 40s” want the cool classic look, but not do without modern ingredients such as ABS. Which is why you choose the new Thruxton generation. With the older classical music fans, I often hear “far too much electrical stuff”. You can almost hunt them down with the provisions of the Euro 4 standard. They then look specifically for the air-cooled Triumph Thruxton 900.

MOTORCYCLE: Does the Cafe Racer actually stand in front of ice cream parlors or is it actually driven??

Janine Gatzsch: We have customers who have now covered more than 100,000 kilometers with their Triumph Thruxton. And that without any problems! In any case, there are no abnormalities in the workshop. Perhaps because the Thruxton is designed to be so sporty, it is driven more than other classic types. A second hobby is of course customizing. There is actually no longer a completely standard Thruxton. Something – whether mini indicators, seat covers, other exhaust – everyone has done. At our events and trips, however, we also see many bikes that are extremely complex and individualized.

MOTORCYCLE: Anyone who invests in this way will likely be loyal to their bike for a long time.

Janine Gatzsch: Exactly, a second or third motorcycle is more likely to be purchased than the personally styled Triumph Thruxton to be sold again. We see it in the prices. The market for used vehicles is manageable and the entry prices are very high. Basically, the Triumph Classic models are very stable in value and special models like the Ace Cafe are in great demand!
