With its Tiger Explorer available in several versions, Triumph puts options in the shade and revisits the notion of additional “packs”. No need to cite the bike serving as a point of reference; let’s stick to the fundamentals of English trail running, decidedly determined to beat the pawn every kilometer in front of him. Especially in this XRx definition.
There is nothing debauchery or provocative about this little x. It is the promise of a much more accommodating journey, of a stay aboard another dimension. Because if the 1200 Explorer has evolved for increased efficiency (improved and more powerful mechanics, radial brakes, more alert chassis, revised style), it only offers the top of its potential to the demanding. This is how the XRx caresses the road with Triumph’s new semi-active suspension, the TSAS system. Designed on WP elements, damping is automatically adjusted via a host of sensors. The motorcycle senses the load in order to adjust the preload. Then, it uses an inertial unit IMU which continuously measures roll, pitch and yaw as well as lateral and longitudinal acceleration. To complete this, another set of data from suspension position, swingarm, wheel speed sensors, brake pressure and throttle grip position combine with IMU info to to adapt the suspension settings as efficiently as possible. With this intelligent damping, the Explorer joins the club of motorcycles heavily equipped with chips and algorithms. And promises you landmarks and milestones in a much higher level of tranquility.
The road goes by, the suspicions are thinking, and it’s not just that. The ABS also takes advantage of the inertial unit to become active in bends, and modulate its force according to the angle.
That’s all ? Not at all ! We are also entitled to an additional driving mode. The base XR comes standard with traction control and Road or Rain modes. The XRx adds off-road, featuring linear throttle response, a moderate level of traction control system intervention and rear ABS disconnection when the rear brake pedal is engaged. The TSAS controlled damping has been specially adjusted for this mode by optimizing the compression to provide greater off-road control.
To complete a very travel-oriented endowment, the on-board equipment also includes hand guards, heated grips, cruise control, automatic cut-off LED indicators, a more advanced on-board computer and a second 12V socket..
And if you want more, an even richer XRt version can let you drive a trail that’s about as equipped as a 4-wheel SUV. Already there, the Triumph 1200 Tiger Explorer XRx allows you to go far in a complacency of power, balance and technological refinements. The template goes hand in hand, and the responsibilities of Grand Tourism go hand in hand.
