Disappeared from the Triumph catalog since 2005, the name Thunderbird returns today in a radically new light. Formerly designating a neo-retro 3-cylinder roadster, this surname is now that of a large custom made for America … designed in Triumph sauce, faithful to the philosophy of our neighbors from across the Channel who do nothing like everybody.
With the Rocket III, Triumph has the biggest production custom (with the exception of Boss Hoss and some seasoned preparations). But this juggernaut with 2.3 liters of cubic capacity is a departure from the custom engine tradition: the latter can only be combined with 2 cylinders; and the Rocket has 3.
This is where this new Thunderbird comes in. A big beast of 1594 cm3 whose heart is a twin … Triumph way. Not a V-shaped mill like on 95% of customs but in parallel, as can be found on Bonneville, Scrambler, and other Thruxton. This brand new 6-speed unit is installed in a very typical Bonneville America chassis. Powerful just the right amount, this liquid-cooled mill develops 86 horsepower under 5,000 rpm. Hinckley has largely supplied it with a couple, with almost 15 mkg in the boiler even before 3000 rpm. Enough to smoothly take off the 339 kg of the machine. Comfort will certainly be one of the charming assets of this huge steel bird..
On the side of the brakes, 3 discs of 310 mm are dispatched to the rescue. An optional ABS is provided, as well as a host of accessories to customize your Thunderbird, from the essential to the superfluous.
