Test: BMW R 1200 GS old versus new: The dark side of power
Our test model also has a GPS, which can be operated in an exemplary manner with the "Multicontroller" on the end of the handlebars, which is familiar from the RT. But together with the on-board computer, the whole thing adds up to a flood of information, with the speed display becoming a marginal phenomenon in the left corner. The old Adventure egg timers suddenly seem really likeable.
In any case, the old GS is still a force on southern French country roads. Both GS chassis are equally sovereign, only in terms of response can the Dynamic ESA noticeably push itself forward. This fits with the overall smoother handling, underpinned in the case of our opponents by the Adventure’s unfair weight disadvantage. Where it has to work a little to get up to speed after the bend, the precision-cooled one snaps towards the next bend like a sports motorcycle. And where the Adventure in attack mode brakes the corner with a whimpering rear wheel, the new one stays stoically on track thanks to the anti-hopping clutch. An unequal duel: The Adventure feels about the same as the new one in the tame "Rain" mode.
Surprisingly, no progress can be felt with the brakes. With radially mounted four-piston fixed calipers, the uber-GS delivers the finest supersport hardware, but the choice of pads was a bit hesitant. You have to reach out properly for an emergency stop. And even then, the new one is a few centimeters later than the big Adventure.
