Where is the experimentation with inter-line traffic for motorcycles?

Feb. 7, 2018

Do you remember, two years ago, the Government announced an experiment on inter-lane traffic for two-wheelers? ?

Subject to conditions specified by decree, this experiment allowing motorcycles to circulate between the queues must be completed in early 2020.

The two-wheelers hope that this measure will be perpetuated thereafter. What about public authorities? Did they reveal any indicators relating to the application of this measure? In this article, we offer you a mid-term review.

Where is the experimentation with inter-line traffic for motorcycles?

Conditions relating to inter-lane traffic: reminder of the established framework

Inter-line traffic is a practice that allows two-wheelers and three-wheelers to be able to travel between cars that are stopped or moving at low speed..

Before analyzing the first elements of the mid-term review for this measure which entered into force on an experimental basis on February 1, 2016, it is important to recall the conditions.

A study carried out at the time of its establishment by the Mutuelle des Motards had shown that about 98% of two-wheelers are used to rolling between lanes.

These figures in hand, the Government had then taken the decision to authorize inter-mesh traffic by the beginning of 2020. However, the public authorities have enacted a strict framework for this practice..

A decree published in the Official Journal at the end of December 2015 sets out the conditions.

Bikers can only move between the lines when there are traffic jams.

More specifically, the text speaks of traffic which "has, because of its density, established itself in uninterrupted file on all lanes, up to a maximum speed of 50 km / h".

Other condition: there must be a road where the two carriageways are separated by a central median and each carriageway must have at least two lanes.

Moreover, this practice is only allowed on highways with a maximum authorized speed not exceeding 70 km / h.

Finally, inter-line traffic is only authorized in predetermined geographical areas: in Ile-de-France, Gironde, in the Rhône and in the Bouches-du-Rhône.

Where are we today with regard to the experiment set up ?

For the moment, the public authorities have not wished to express a position concerning the inter-line movement of two-wheelers and give figures concerning the experiment in progress..

As for the bikers, they are of a very positive opinion and want experimentation to allow this rule to be definitively established. According to Jean-Marc Belotti, coordinator of the Parisian branch of the French Federation of Angry Motards, interfile traffic is an old practice that does not call into question the safety of two-wheelers.

For him, this measure allows bikers to have, on the contrary, better visibility which is not possible when driving behind a vehicle.

To know : today inter-line traffic is taught by driving schools. This undoubtedly contributes to making this practice more secure… To be continued !

What to remember about inter-lane motorcycle traffic

  • Inter-queue traffic is being tested in Ile-de-France, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gironde and the Rhône since February 1, 2016.
  • Inter-file traffic is taught in motorbike school to allow bikers to make this practice safer.
  • Inter-lane traffic is authorized on roads where the two carriageways are separated by a central reservation with at least two lanes.
