In tow of the German MotoGP star

A country road tour in tow with the German MotoGP star Stefan Bradl feels almost as normal as an everyday outing with friends: Relaxed turn on the gas, enjoy winding back roads, take a break, talk gasoline.

Meeting point “Hotel zur Linde” in Schambach-Kipfenberg, for once a sunny spring day in Germany. Stefan Bradl, Moto2 World Champion of 2011 and now in his second year in the premier class, arrives punctually at the agreed time at nine o’clock. He has already covered around 70 kilometers, from his home town of Zahling near Augsburg to the foothills of the picturesque, winding Altmuhltal. The 23-year-old knows the streets in this area well. If he has a home track next to the slopes of this world, it is in this corner of Bavaria.

“Not a typical racing driver, but a typical man”

He is already expected. Not just from a handful of journalists who tire manufacturer Brigdestone invited to try out the new Battlax T30 touring rubber; Bradl is supposed to drive ahead as a draft horse. At the edge of the group is also Johannes, who found out on Facebook that “Germany’s best motorcyclist is coming here today”. The excited young crosser doesn’t really dare to speak to his idol, but Bradl approaches him in a friendly manner, patiently allows himself to be photographed, signs autographs and literally chats, so that he almost misses the start of the test tour. Finally it starts, the tension rises among the journalists. Will Bradl show us right away on his Honda VFR 1200 where the hammer is? The new tire to the limit and drive us to despair?

Not even close. The MotoGP rider drives cleanly on the country road, but completely unspectacular. No wheelies on the long straights, no knee-dragging inclines in the meandering curves. Instead, a casual, relaxed driving style, sometimes one-handed, because the VFR is automatic, the clutch hand remains idle today. The young Bavarian, who relentlessly fights for every meter on the racetrack, fits in surprisingly inconspicuously into the group. “The races are something completely different, namely pure adrenaline, constant tension and stress. For me, driving on the country road is pure relaxation – I don’t have to prove anything here.

Or maybe he is just showing respect for the road traffic regulations because he is not traveling alone, but accompanied by journalists? Otherwise, would he race through the quiet Altmuhltal with full racing spirit? In any case, his girlfriend Jana told us on another occasion that he did some wheelies with her on the back until her heart almost stopped. “Oh, that has nothing to do with racing spirit,” grins Bradl. “I’m doing this because I want to impress them. And that’s not typical for a racing driver on the country road, but typical for a man, isn’t it? “

“I don’t think country roads are more dangerous than race tracks”

But Jana is not there today, and so both wheels of the VFR stay on the ground, just as Bradl wants to remain inconspicuous. But when it comes to stops, it is the focus, and the tinted visor doesn’t help either. Although Germany shouldn’t be seen as obsessed with motorsport, it is well recognized. There are no crowds, but that wouldn’t suit the reticent German either. He obviously enjoys dealing with the fans, especially the young ones. “After all, it wasn’t long ago that I was in the same position,” he says with a laugh.

Bradl is a rare species with his private motorcycle tours. Since Toni Mang’s time, most professional racing drivers have been annoying their contemporaries by saying that they don’t ride motorcycles on public roads because it is too dangerous for them. Fortunately, Stefan Bradl sees it differently. “I don’t think it’s more dangerous here than on the racetrack,” he says succinctly. Especially since a series machine is not a challenge for him compared to his Honda RC213V piste racer. “I can concentrate fully on the traffic and the road, the motorcycle runs by itself anyway. Sure, someone can always shut you down. But that’s no different on the racetrack. “
