Corser signs his 43rd pole, the 1st of the S1000RR !
This afternoon on the Misano track in Italy, Troy Corser brilliantly demonstrated that he still deserves his nickname "Mister Poleman": for the 43rd time, the Australian crocodile will start from first place on the grid. World Superbike. A new Superpole which however has a very particular flavor since the "old" Troy -…
This afternoon on the Misano track in Italy, Troy Corser brilliantly demonstrated that he still deserves his nickname "Mister Poleman": for the 43rd time, the Australian crocodile will start from first place on the grid. World Superbike.
A new Superpole which, however, has a very special flavor since the "old" Troy – he rolls around 39 years old – offers his very first pole position to the very young BMW S1000RR…
As soon as it arrived on the WSBK plateau last year, the S1000RR had jostled its competitors by displaying maximum power never seen in this category. Despite this, the BMW has remained in the shadow of a machine also launched last year: the Aprilia RSV4 !
Indeed, led by the emperor – Roman Emperor, you will understand -, the RSV4 Factory has carved out a very solid reputation since its first season: Ben Spies Himself recently confessed to us that Noale’s weapon is the sharper of the plateau…
Climbing on the podium nine times in 2009, including once on the top step, the Italian has outclassed the German. And the latter had to wait until 2010 to slash the champagne, during the second round at … Monza, on the lands of Aprilia and Ducati !
As it was on purpose, the S1000RR took advantage of this new transalpine weekend to take its first pole in the World Superbike. A good performance for a BMW which does not have the same experience in motorcycle speed as its Japanese or Italian rivals…
The time taken by Corser and his Behème is also very impressive: 1 ‘35.001, it is 4 tenths faster than Jakub Smrz, poleman of the event last year … but above all a full half second faster than their closest competitors this year, a certain Max Biaggi and his Aprilia !
Tomorrow, it will therefore be necessary to watch the BMW n ° 11: capable of taking excellent starts and leading the race, the S1000RR has – for the moment – always lacked endurance. Let’s hope for the show that Troy will be able to defend himself against his opponents until the checkered flag !
In addition to the two brisquards Corser and Biaggi, it will be necessary to count on two younger pilots and holding in a pocket handkerchief: Michel Fabrizio and his factory Ducati, as well as Cal Crutchlow and his official Yamaha "prepared in Italy". The public will surely not know where to turn !
Just behind Carlos Checa (5th), Sylvain Guintoli enjoys the luxury of getting ahead of his teammate Leon Haslam, Biaggi’s only rival in the championship, on the grid. By starting from 6th place tomorrow, Syl ‘will try to show us that he does indeed have the pace of the best in the race..
Author of superb but too discreet lifts during several races in the first half of the season, our only representative in the World Superbike has a great card to play. Just like Luca Scassa besides, housed in 8th position on the handlebars of his private Ducati, at the aspi of Gex ‘of Guintoli and Haslam…
Again, Noriyuki Haga will have to spit in the gloves to extricate himself from the 3rd row, which he leads in front of the two private Ducatis of Jakub Smrz and Lorenzo Lanzi, and the second BMW piloted by Ruben Xaus. The 4th line should also be lively: the British Toseland, Camier, Byrne and Rea will team up to try to reach the outposts !
From the back of the grid, Kawasaki and Honda will have a lot to do to integrate the Top10 in the race … Federico Sandi, invited by Aprilia on an exceptional third RSV4, will continue his daydream and try to grab his first points in the World Cup. Superbike.
Crutchlow in the lead after day one
Cal Crutchlow and his official R1 have just set the best time of this first day of testing at Misano. This afternoon, the Englishman and his Yamaha n ° 35 completed the transalpine circuit in 1 ‘36.288, one second faster than Troy Corser, the fastest man this morning.
But the Australian and his S1000RR have certainly not said their last word and remain on the lookout, at just 56 thousandths of Cal! Leon Haslam is not far (21 thousandths!) And ranks 3rd at the controls of his GSX-R1000.
Thanks to Michel Fabrizio and Carlos Checa, Ducati completes the Top5 this Friday, but the Italian and the Spanish are not quite in the same rhythm as the three leading men. They give respectively a quarter and a half second to their predecessors.
Sixth fastest time this afternoon, Max Biaggi reassures his audience: the Aprilia rider was "only" 12th this morning! Would the n ° 3 focus mainly on his pace in the race? Mystery and Pirelli Balls…
Shane Byrne and Luca Scassa confirm the good results of private testing during World Ducati Week (read) and hoist their private 1198Rs in 7th and 8th place, just ahead of Leon Camier and the second factory Aprilia.
On occasion, we note that a third RSV4 Factory takes part in the San Marino event: the n ° 90 ridden by Federico Sandi, a 21-year-old Italian driver who, failing to have made a breakthrough in GP 125, tries to make a name for itself in Italian Superbike … and in the world this weekend! It is good ? – last at the end of this first day.
In the middle of the table are found James Toseland, Jakub Smrz, Sylvain Guintoli and Noriyuki Haga: they have two sessions left to find the second they miss against their opponents and / or teammates..
In 14th and 16th positions, Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea are working hard to catch up: unlike the men in front of them, they did not perform a test in Misano two weeks ago (read).
Their pursuers (Lanzi, Neukirchner, Vermeulen, Parkes, Baiocco and Hayden) are all in the same situation. Qualifications and Superpole to follow tomorrow Saturday, on Site.
