Titled in 2012 in Superstock 1000 on the S1000RR of the BMW Italia team, Sylvain Barrier did it again in 2013, in front of his audience at Magny-Cours. Small – big! – difference however with last year: the French driver was racing on the HP4 version of the BMW…

Last Sunday at Magny-Cours (read our, our and our, the perilous weather conditions and the Superstock 1000 race disputed in two stages encouraged Sylvain Barrier to ride cautiously. In front of his home crowd, the Frenchman was thus content with a wise fourth place…

"I had a very good first start and had no problems so I wanted to continue", explains the BMW Goldbet driver."My second start was not as good so I rode cautiously, being careful not to make any mistakes as I knew what I had to do to win."- not the French round, but the STK 1000 title !

By pocketing 13 points in France, Sylvain Barrier captured the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup for the second consecutive year. The colt of James Toseland – the two-time WSBK champion took him under his wing three years ago, the Englishman also drove for BMW – his Italian team and the Munich engineers are particularly proud of the work accomplished this season.

Indeed, despite the impressive track record of the S1000RR in the Superstock category – victorious from its first participation in 2010 with Ayrton Badovini and titled last year with Sylvain – the 2013 Cup was not raised in advance for the BMW Goldbet team who entered a new bike: the HP4 and its electronic DDC suspensions (read our) !

"This meant that before the season started, we had no idea how competitive we were against our competitors.", recalls BMW Motorrad Racing Department General Manager Berthold Hauser.

"In addition, it is not easy to adapt new motorcycles and technologies, not only to the specific requirements of racing in general, but to the riding style of each rider as well as to the specific characteristics of each track.", insists the big German boss.

"Without having data from previous years, adjusting the bike and the electronics is a challenge that is renewed with each event.", begs us to believe Herr Hauser whose speech is somewhat belied by the overwhelming supremacy of Mr. Barrier…

Of the nine races contested this season – the tenth and final will be held next week in Jerez – Sylvain has won five times and climbed two more podiums. Only downside: a draw at Monza, following the collision of a competitor in the first chicane.

"This season has been fantastic for me", sums up" Syl20 "… sorry:" Sylv’1 "!"I really enjoyed working with BMW and the new BMW HP4. I really enjoyed fighting with Niccolo Canepa throughout the year (2nd in the standings at 33 points, Niccolo was riding a Ducati 1199 Panigale, Editor’s note), he was also consistent".

"Thanks to BMW for placing their trust in me", concludes the native of Oyonnax – Rugby fans will locate -,"and we’ll see what we have in store for next year"… With this second Superstock title, Sylvain Barrier’s rating is still climbing on the World Superbike market !

Too bad therefore that BMW has decided to … Especially since the Superbike category is brought to. Given this development and with a pilot of Sylvain’s caliber in its ranks, the German firm would have had two great cards to play … And even three, with the famous HP4 !
