WSBK 2011: Laverty will join Melandri at Yamaha
Supersport rider Eugene Laverty will race next year in Superbike for the Yamaha Sterilgarda team, alongside Marco Melandri. After Ben Spies and Cal Crutchlow, the tuning fork brand offers itself the services of a very promising new pilot !
It’s official, in 2011 the official Mondial Superbike R1 will be driven by the "future ex-star" of MotoGP Marco Melandri, but also by the rising star of the Mondial Supersport: Eugene Laverty !
The Irishman, just 24 years old, is therefore getting ready to get on a motorcycle that Crutchlow and Spies have managed to lead to victory. "Youjine" is under pressure … and the means to succeed, that’s for sure.
Since his very first motorcycle race in 2001 at Nutts Corner, Eugene has had to show tenacity but has ended up proving that he has the makings of a champion. After having made his classes in the British championship (125 then Supersport), Laverty left his native Great Britain in 2007 to go racing around the world within the LCR team in GP 250.
Eugene scored six points in his first season but did not do much better the second at Blusens on Aprilia still: 8 points and a 21st place in the "two and a half" championship in 2008, nothing to show off. Nevertheless, the click came that same year, but in a different category…
"When I rode the Yamaha YZF-R6 in World Supersport in 2008, I was in a bad spot in 250", remembers Eugene, forever grateful to the house of Iwata for having asked to replace our poor Fabien Foret then injured….
Twelfth in his very first World SSP participation at home in Donington Park, Laverty was revealed by stepping onto the podium in his second race, two weeks later in Vallelunga: "Yamaha allowed me to blossom and now offers me the opportunity to integrate the Superbike, it’s great"he admits !
Impressed by these performances, the Honda Parkalgar team – which then tragically lost Craig Jones, whom we will not forget either – signed Eugene for the 2009 season. The n ° 50 then climbed eight times on the podium, including four times on the first step, and finished 2nd in the championship just 7 points behind King Sofuoglu.
Faithful to his Team Manager Simon Buckmaster, Laverty returned to the CBR600RR in 2010 and made further progress: with two races to go to the end of the season, Eugene already has 5 poles, 8 podiums, 7 wins and 211 points! And although Kenan Sofuoglu is 12 points ahead of him in the championship, the young Irishman takes a place – of choice – in the World Superbike thanks to his superb performances. !
Next season therefore, the Yamaha Sterilgarda team will be among the big favorites of the WSBK championship: thanks to its R1 "Cross Plane" of course, to the famous Ravenna Hedgehog … but also thanks to this friendly Irish elf who, according to its official website dreams of only one thing: MotoGP! Business to follow – with that of James Toseland’s future ?! -, on the site.
