Second Phillip Island Superbike race 2016
Tom Sykes took off well from his pole position and plunged into the lead in the first curve in front of his teammate Jonathan Rea well on his way to third place. The two official Kawasaki are followed by Davide Giugliano, Michael van den Mark, Alex Lowes, Sylvain Guintoli, Chaz Davies, Nicky Hayden, Lorenzo Savadori and Karel Abraham.
Ninjas n ° 66 and n ° 1 swap places twice in the first minute: once at the exit of Southern Loop (outside Rea!), A second time in Honda (inside Sykes). Then Lowes strangely departs in Lucky Heights and starts again in penultimate position.
Davies climbed to fifth position on lap 2, posting his factory Ducati ahead of Guintoli’s official Yamaha and Hayden’s Honda Ten Kate. Camier and Savadori retreated to the last places of the race … The MV Agusta driver joined the pits without completing his 3rd lap.
In front, Sykes accelerates and distances Rea slightly in the middle of the 3rd lap but the "Number One" responds tit for tat, only letting slip a quarter of a second. Van den Mark follows Rea and brings in his wake the two factory Panigales of Davies and Giugliano. Savadori goes back into the pit-lane while Camier comes out.
At 11 seconds behind the leaders, Sylvain Barrier occupied 15th place but was deprived of it by Alex Lowes on the 5th lap. The n ° 20 is found just in front of Schmitter and Al Sulaiti. The two Yamaha Toths bring up the rear on the track … Leon Camier is one lap behind.
"Major Tom" still leads the race on lap 6 but is chased by six drivers: the ruthless "JR" does not leave his rear wheel, the talented "Magic Michael" is still in their aspi ‘, "Chazie n’ is not far either, the fiery Giugliano and the "Kentucky Kid" fight together and "Guinters" struggles to stay in touch.
On their BMWs, Brookes (team Milwaukee) and Reiterberger (team Althea) are battling for 8th place, six seconds behind the leaders. The Top 10 is completed by another BMW driver (Althea): the loner – and injured elbow – Jordi Torres. Sylvain Barrier is holding on in 16th position.
Sykes completes a record 9th lap but Rea hangs on and beats his teammate’s time by nothing. In the following lap, the 2013 world champion suffered a kick from his ZX-10R under Honda braking, pulled aside generously and lost three places. Van den Mark then chooses to take the race in hand…
The Dutchman n ° 60 completed the 11th lap in front of the British n ° 1, n ° 7 and n ° 66. Inseparable Giugliano and Hayden are caught by our compatriot Guintoli: seven drivers can still claim victory as we enter the second half of the race !
The reigning world champion stays a few lengths behind Van den Mark and carefully closes the doors in front of Davies placed in his backsplash! Sykes, Giugliano, Hayden and Guintoli are also riding in close formation but none have yet sparked hostilities: there are still eight laps to go.
On the next lap, however, Davide brakes late as Honda approaches and slightly touches Tom’s rear tire. ZX-10R n ° 66 and Panigale n ° 34 miss the rope and let Fireblade n ° 69 and R1 n ° 50 pass !
In front, the Ninja n ° 1 stays quietly behind the CBR n ° 60 and gently plugs the Panigale n ° 7 with each passage in the first curve Doohan Corner. Davies pulls aside several times in this turn which trades on fourth gear !
At the back of the peloton, Giugliano tried his luck again in the Honda hairpin and this time passed Sykes without a hitch. Placed in front of them, Hayden completed the 17th lap faster than anyone! With four laps to go, Rea leaps into the lead, Davies remaining impeccably in his aspiration.
The final sprint is finally launched: Rea protects his rear and forces Davies to constantly change his trajectories, which in turn hinders Van den Mark. "Chazie" crushes his right lever in the penultimate pass in the Honda pin and slips his Panigale under the Ninja of his best enemy "Johnny".
The Welshman completed the penultimate lap in the lead but was overtaken by the Northern Irishman in the final dive into the Doohan curve. Rider n ° 7 Ducati unleashes the same attack as in the previous lap, passes in front of n ° 1 Kawasaki but loses the front !
Surprised by Chaz’s fall, Michael van den Mark loses contact with Jonathan Rea. The n ° 1 thus easily wins the victory. He is escorted from afar by the Honda n ° 60, while Giugliano replaces Davies by also climbing on the podium..
Beaten by the Italian n ° 34 in the last sequence of the circuit, Hayden finished this second round in an encouraging fourth place. Sylvain Guintoli’s fifth place is perhaps even more promising: unlike the Honda, the Yamaha is only at the start of its development. !
On the strength of his Australian double, Jonathan Rea takes the lead in “his” World Superbike championship. With 14 points from the perfect score, Michael van den Mark took second place. He is followed by Giugliano, Davies (10th in the second race), Sykes and Guintoli.
Note that Sylvain Barrier scores a second point in the second round. The n ° 20 of the Kawasaki Pedercini team thus occupies the 16th place of the provisional classification. Next points distribution: in two weeks in Thailand. The event will again be watched live on MNC: stay tuned !
