Shortened by Laverty’s engine failure, the second Superbike race at Phillip Island crowns Sylvain Guintoli and Loris Baz! The two French pilots are ahead of the world champion Sykes on this podium, and Melandri in the provisional classification…

Second Superbike race

Marco Melandri takes the lead ahead of Davide Giugliano, Sylvain Guintoli, Jonathan Rea, Loris Baz, Tom Sykes, Alex Lowes, Eugene Laverty, Leon Haslam and Niccolo Canepa. Boiling, Lowes comes off the track at the first hairpin … Foret is 13th, Guarnoni 15th.

Loris Baz takes fourth place just before completing the first lap and climbs to second place in the straight behind … Sylvain Guintoli! The two French are ahead of Melandri, Rea and Laverty, already back in sixth position.

The Irishman passed Giugliano on braking the Honda hairpin on the 3rd lap and is now aiming for fourth place in the No.65 Fireblade. In the bottom of the standings, Lowes stood out by posting the fastest lap in the race: the Suzuki are in good shape !

Melandri momentarily loses her footing and falls back to fifth place on the 4th lap. Sylvain Guintoli remains in the lead and moves away slightly from Loris Baz in the 5th loop. Loris, however, is lagging behind on the straight and widens a gap of half a second on Rea.

Eugene Laverty does not want to let the two Frenchies slip away and immediately overtakes Johnny Rea. Baz takes the reins of the race on the 7th lap. Eugene tries to attack Sylvain in the hairpin, widens and takes the n ° 50 with him. Rea momentarily takes second position, quickly seized by Laverty.

The winner of the first Australian round takes the lead in the next loop. Melandri is lost when braking the hairpin, takes the loophole and rejoins the track in 14th position, just behind Foret, third Evo driver behind Salom and Canepa.

Chaz Davies and his Ducati n ° 7, rather discreet from the start of the race, climbed to fourth position ahead of Rea, Sykes, Giugliano and Haslam. A second later rolls … Lowes, who comes back like a ball! His teammate continues to dominate the race, Baz and Guintoli are housed in his rear wheel.

Davies is dislocated by Haslam then Rea in the parabolic Southern Loop: the 1199 Panigale must have a technical problem … The other official Ducati driven by Giugliano holds up: overtaken by Sykes, the Italian occupies a good fifth place.

Shortly before the halfway point, Marco Melandri was in ninth place. Lowes, who confuses speed and haste, went off the track again. Suzuki n ° 22 is 14th behind our very good old Fabien Foret. The young Jeremy Guarnoni is 17th.

Laverty is still in the lead but Guintoli decides to accelerate the movement. Passed in front of "Bazooka" on the 12th lap, "Guinters" literally drops "Youdjine" in the straight line but fails to get rid of Laverty, nor of Baz in the winding.

In fourth place, Sykes is a second behind his young and great teammate and nibbles some ground on the lively top three, which makes Tom’s job even easier. The "Number One" is found in the wheel of Baz at the very moment when the 4-cylinder of the Suz ‘n ° 58 gives up the ghost…

Crossing the plume of smoke without incident (phew!), Baz inherits second place and Sykes climbs on the podium. The red flag is waved a handful of seconds later, bringing this second Superbike race to an end at Phillip Island !

Sylvain Guintoli thus won the second victory of his career and placed himself at the head of the provisional classification with 41 points, just ahead of Loris Baz who has accumulated 31! Too messy in the second round, Melandri totals 28 points and settles in third place.

See you tomorrow for the declarations of spilots and the Site analysis. Next distribution of points for World Superbike riders: April 13 at the also very demanding Motorland circuit in Aragon, Spain. Stay connected !
