Yamaha MT-09 (2017) in the driving report

Better equipment, more sportiness

The driving report of the Yamaha MT-09 (2017) shows: the popular middle-class naked is better equipped and thus aims towards more sportiness.

Already put in early 2016 Yamaha hand to the Yamaha MT-09, but at that time to a manageable extent. Around two and a half years after the launch, the electronics department reported a revised coordination of the driving modes and also donated the triplet a two-stage traction control. After the widespread criticism of the slack chassis, the technicians then also tuned the fork and shock absorber tighter. But apparently that was not enough, because with the extensive changes for the 2017 vintage, the Japanese took on the innards of the spring elements again. More about the effect in a moment, here first the other significant measures of the makeover: fresh design, servo-assisted slipper clutch, automatic gearshift. In addition, the MT now has a fully adjustable, asymmetrical fork. In other words, the compression stage works in one spar and the rebound stage in the other.

Better equipment, more sportiness

More sportiness!

It is therefore clear where the journey is headed: straight in the direction of more sportiness. The tighter coordination of the spring elements is already noticeable in the first few meters. The Yamaha MT-09 now speeds through the area much more stable. Nevertheless, Yamaha limits the top speed to 210 km / h even with the new one. In addition, it no longer handles bumps so easily, especially the shock absorber has lost some of its comfort. However, as it turned out only after the ride, the technicians for this presentation closed the damping of the shock absorber a little and also increased the preload by one level. How the MT-09 works with standard settings will be clarified in a detailed test in one of the next issues.

Passenger seat now with a longer seat

With the modified spring base, the seating position, which had already grown by five millimeters, increased again. With the nice effect that the Yamaha MT-09 looks more front-heavy and the driver sits more actively on his pedestal. In this case, the little trickery brought clear advantages. The bench is also new. It is narrower in the tank area and flattens out to the pillion seat, which now offers a 13 millimeter longer seat. This gives the driver more freedom of movement and offers the passenger increased comfort.

Automatic switch as standard

The standard gearshift is also very pleasant. The clutch-free upshift is not as smooth as it is with the best systems. But it is definitely more convenient than stepping through the aisles with the clutch. As before, downshifting only works with the handle on the clutch lever. In addition to technical refinements, Yamaha also gave the MT-09 a new design. The narrow LED headlights with the angular cladding à la MT-10 are characteristic. In general, the styling of the Yamaha MT-09 is based heavily on that of its big, bad sister. The crisp rear, which has been shortened by 29 millimeters, goes perfectly with it. To clearly accentuate this, Yamaha screwed the license plate holder in the area of the axle mount. If you want to spice up the styling, you can use the extensive in-house accessories.

Drive almost unchanged, new mapping

The drive goes into the new season almost unchanged. The new mapping does not rob him of any fascination, and the triplet remains what it has always been: a fabulous giver of joy with a guarantee of happiness hormones! However, nothing has changed in terms of responsiveness. As before, the Yamaha MT-09 jumps unnecessarily hard on the gas in position "A". At "B" the throttle response is pleasantly soft, but this level cuts the peak performance. Standard ("Std") should be an ideal medium, but sensitive pilots also complain here of somewhat hard load changes. Interested parties now have to pay a few hundreds more for the MT-09. Yamaha calls out 8,995 euros for the naked bike. Available now in three colors: gray, blue and black.
