Yamaha is saying goodbye to the SR 400 in Japan. After more than 43 years, a final edition marks the end of the large, air-cooled single.
The model introduced in 1978 and derived from the XT 500 advanced internationally as the SR 500 to the cult bike. The SR stands for Single Road – it was a retro model before anyone even invented the term retro bike. As a 500 it lasted until 1999, then it was only marketed as a 400. In Germany, it left the market at the end of 2016 with no ABS. The now finally declared end Yamaha with the ban on the production of motorcycles without ABS, which will apply from October 2021, and the further increased emissions requirements.

The SR remained true to its distinguishing features throughout the entire construction period and across both displacement classes. The air-cooled single-cylinder, which is only brought to life with a kick starter, developed up to 43 hp in some markets as a 500 series. The SR 400 currently still has 24 hp and 29 Nm torque. In addition there is the small teardrop-shaped sheet metal tank, stereo struts, the spoked wheels and the large round headlight.
Two special ones for Japan
The SR 400 Final Edition will roll out in Japan from March 15, 2021 – and a limited edition will also be available for real freaks. The Final Edition is offered in unlimited quantities, whereas the limited special model is only available in an edition of 1,000 copies. The Final Edition is available with a blue paintwork with a brown bench and a two-tone gray paintwork with a correspondingly designed bench.

The limited edition bears the black-brown special color sunburst, spoke rims in the same color, special model badges on the side covers and specially designed dials in the round instruments.
The Final Edition starts in Japan from the equivalent of around 4,800 euros, the Limited Edition costs from 5,900 euros. In Germany, when she left, she was on the price list for just under 5,800 euros. Japanese sources believe that the SR 400 will continue to be produced in Thailand for the local market, and they hope that the SR will make a comeback at some point.

Conclusion
The Yamaha SR is cult and has always been considered a real men’s motorcycle. Only experts could handle the kick starter. Ok, memory transfigured a lot. But holding out for over 43 years speaks for the simple concept and the loyal fan base.
