WSSP Spain: Sacred Caricasulo and Cluzel, Mahias almost titled
Hounded by Jules Cluzel during most of the Supersport race, Federico Caricasulo had to fight until the end to win in Jerez. His teammate – our other compatriot! – Lucas Mahias finished fifth and practically secures his coronation… Practically.
Departure : Sheridan Morais got off to a great start from outside the front row and took the lead in the first corner. The South African is followed by Federico Caricasulo, Jules Cluzel, Patrick Jacobsen, Lucas Mahias, Christian Gamarino, Anthony West, Michael Canducci, etc..
The No. 64 Yamaha official took control in the middle of the first lap and gradually moved away from his pursuers. "Julo" and his Honda n ° 16 overtake Sheridan and his private Yamaha n ° 32 in turn and join the Italian at the end of this 1st loop.
A first group formed at the head of the race, made up of Caricasulo, Cluzel, Jacobsen, Morais, Mahias and Gamarino. Our compatriot Lucas overtook Sheridan when braking the last corner of the 2nd lap. A few moments later, our n ° 16 takes the reins of the race by braking the n ° 6 hairpin. !
Federico replied in the next lap, while Lucas set a new fastest time in the race but came up against MV Agusta n ° 99! PJ Jacobsen for his part, remains focused on his target – very – moving: Cluzel who follows Caricasulo !
The Italian beats the record of his teammate n ° 144 in the 4th lap, but Cluzel also continues to improve his own times and yields only a few hundredths of a second to his opponent! Jacobsen and Mahias follow a few lengths behind, followed by West. The rest of the peloton is already far away.
While trying to close the slight gap between him and Cluzel, Jacobsen feels the rear of his F3 drive away suddenly under acceleration! The American must be careful not to upset his Italian diva. A lap later, Mahias misses the braking of the hairpin, allowing West to pass into the next sequence !
The race is a little less animated two seconds ahead: Cluzel does not leave the rear wheel of Caricasulo without triggering the slightest attack. There are still 11 laps to go and the "Coq Supersportif" no doubt wants to keep a little rubber for the end of the race..
PJ Jacobsen is one second behind the leading duo and turns a third of a second slower than his direct rivals. West joins driver MV Agusta as the mid-race mark is reached. Mahias is less sharp than the Australian. But he’s also much more under pressure !
The Ninja n ° 13 thinks he can take advantage of a somewhat wide trajectory of n ° 99 in the last curve of the Andalusian circuit but must change his mind at the last moment! The two motorcycles brush against each other – touch each other? – but attack the straight line of the pits without incident.
Mahias has a front row seat to enjoy the show, but unfortunately cannot get on the stage! The leading roles are always provided by Caricasulo and Cluzel, impressive consistency … and speed, since the two "co" leaders are a big second ahead of Jacobsen and West !
Anthony West is enjoying himself at the controls of the ZX-6R that the Puccetti team has exceptionally entrusted to him this weekend! And the public is also delighted to see his slips when braking, the flames coming out of his exhaust, and his machine moving abundantly at the exit of a curve. !
After several unsuccessful attacks, the n ° 13 ended up settling on the third step of the Spanish podium! Cluzel is now his target, placed a second ahead. Stuck in Caricasulo’s aspiration for many turns, "Julo" carefully prepares his final…
The No.16 Honda rider keeps the pressure on the shoulders of the No.64 Yamaha, while delighting his fans with sumptuous glides from the rear to the brakes. The Kawasaki n ° 13, which seemed to be able to make the connection at the very end of the race, ultimately failed to do so. Jacobsen and Mahias gradually return the gas.
The last lap is launched and Cluzel remains behind Caricasulo, waiting for the last section (called the Stadium with its series of very fast rights) to launch – finally! – his attack! Jules throws his CBR inside the first break on the right but has to slow down so as not to take out his rival…
In the following right, "Julo" tries again to win on the inside but Federico holds on and parries his attack! The two men come out shoulder to shoulder on the last right and tumble head-on into the very last corner of the circuit: the left "which kills" !
Placed on the outside, Cluzel thinks – just a moment ?! – to pass Caricasulo from the outside, as the masterful Laverty did on Melandri a few years ago in Superbike! But the Yamaha official is solid, brakes as late as "our" PTR rider and turns in the lead…
The two men just have to accelerate toc to the checkered flag. Federico Caricasulo logically stays ahead of Jules Cluzel who may have taken too long to overtake his opponent … Anthony West climbs on the podium, far ahead of Jacobsen and Mahias.
Fifth in this penultimate World Supersport round in Spain, Lucas can no longer be overtaken by the drivers who were riding with him today: Jules is 30 points behind, more than one victory! But Kenan Sofuoglu, who was denied access to the track this weekend due to his hip injury, remains in the race for the title…
Lucas Mahias‘ – second – world title now depends only on the recovery of the five-time Turkish champion: if the latter withdraws from the final in Qatar in two weeks, then our compatriot will be immediately declared SSP 2017 world champion..
But the No. 54 Kawasaki rider will do everything possible to convince the WorldSBK medical team to let him race at Losail and try to close the gap between him and the French leader: 20 points. After this first missed match point, Lucas therefore retains a clear advantage. Case to follow, on MNC: stay connected !
