2001 Honda VTR SP-1 RC 51

The RC 45 is forgotten. From now on, to beat Ducati, Honda will use the same weapons: a V2! And not just any: a concentrate of Honda know-how with an H.R.C. This 999cc twin is equipped with magnesium casings, electronic fuel injection and a forced air intake system – it alone contributes to the identity of the SP-1. The yawning triangle between the eyes of the motorcycle directly feeds the air box through a duct passing through the steering column. Surprising! And in addition, it has the mouth this VTR. Its magnificent red decoration is all to the glory of the winged builder. No link with the standard version which is intended to be a good road sports car. No, the SP-1 is pure competitor. Moreover, at 100,000 Frs a piece, it is not intended for amateurs. On the other side of the Atlantic, it is called RC 51 and mistreats the Ducati Superbike. In competition, it is a formidable weapon but very different from the existing model at the dealership. Because to become the machine to unbolt the 996 SP, the VTR undergoes a lot of modifications and benefits from a copious (and expensive) H.R.C kit..
On the track, the beautiful stalled against competitors with less demanding geometry. However, the chassis does not make up the figure: aluminum perimeter frame and huge swingarm. No, it’s wrong with depreciation. Suspensions that are too soft may tear the bike apart when the track becomes bouncy. Not really dangerous but very penalizing against the clock. The machine throws itself into the bend with exemplary ease unless you still hold it on the brakes. There, the bike is much more (too?) Physical to place. Braking is a marvel, no complaints even if you can not really enjoy it. The fork can be adjusted in all directions but its excessive flexibility means that the stop is too easily reached. Out of the box, she’s not really a track girl.

2001 Honda VTR SP-1 RC 51On the road, the SP-1 is much more interesting. Its 136 hp engine combines flexibility and power with a lot of charm. It manifests at 4000 revs and sends furiously after 5500 revs. Its power curve is less expressive than that of a 996, but it is much more energetic than the 4 legs. Impeccable handling, ideal attack position and gearbox in concert; we enjoy the serpentine roads. In fact, the machine only suffers if it is used in extreme use. This is where the words give her a little magic potion and she becomes formidable. As proof, she won the 24 hrs of Le Mans on her first participation – that’s because !
