The name ‘Special’ is perhaps the one that has the most on the move at Harley. Do not hear there that the bike evolves very regularly, as if it always needed THE little something extra. In 2019, it is the appropriation of the large twin 114 that we particularly highlight. Turning the 107 barely installed for two years, this Road Glide jumped from 150 to 163 Nm. Enough to afford more force on all floors and ignore the 391 kilos of board.
What more muscle?!? Not quite. By evolving mechanically, the Road Glide Special was not asked to take part in the top of Harley entertainment. We are talking about the GTS Boom Box here. What? A clear evolution of the multimedia console, allowing user comfort that has been amply revised upwards. Its 6.5-inch TFT color screen is more resistant, more intuitive to touch, gives more contrast and better resolution. Navigation between functions has been simplified while computing power and memory are boosted. The Boom Box starts much faster, calculates routes faster and energizes the wide range of functions it is equipped with: GPS, Bluetooth, intercom, music playback via USB / SD card / iPhone / iPod, 25 watts per channel, system voice recognition, and the appearance this year of Apple CarPlay.
And before ? Barely before all this, in 2018, this ship was already in the mood for mods. The look, the spirit, her vision hardly changed, but a few elements placed her in the dark clan. It started with a pair of 19 and 18 inch ‘Talon’ rims. The saddlebags were more stretched in their lower part, visually beveling the exhausts and making the stern more elusive – a design trait that appeared with the Road King Special. A whole series of chrome had disappeared, in order to blend in with the dark: the engine protection, the fork tubes, the handlebars and the controls, the mirrors, the indicators, the tank console, the engine covers, the cover of the air filter and exhaust heat shields. A more aggressive echo, for a Touring that does not hide ambition.
Genesis
After tempting travelers in a CVO version and then in a more affordable version, the Road Glide took a new step in 2017 with the transplant of a heart full of displacement, twice as many valves than usual and a good dose of evolution: the Milwaukee Eight. Returning to the French market in the same vein as the Rushmore project, the Road Glide is appreciated here in a version called Special. Why Special? For the few carefully added equipment. But would that obscure the charm of the Bog Block? Surely not.
Less vibrations at idle and more efficiency on the suspension side. Fork and shock absorbers come from Showa, provide more consistency in the damping, and gain ease of adjustment for the rear.
Recently, the Road Glide benefited from the Rushmore project. Everyone’s experience to benefit the Harleys of tomorrow. The brakes benefit from ABS and the coupled Reflex system. Safety watchdog for 300mm rotors bitten by 4-piston calipers.
The look of the Road Glide has changed somewhat. Normal, his eyes are much more efficient Daymaker LED headlights. The brand asserts it loud and clear in figures: 85% wider and 6% more power in low beam, 35% wider and 45% more power in high beam. But what you will appreciate the most is the optimization of the top of the fairing, the famous SharkNose. Very subtly revised after multiple passages in the wind tunnel and road tests, it sports a triple vent to equalize the pressure in front of and behind the windshield. The rider can thus slice through the air with a tranquility unheard of on a Harley while enjoying an improved riding position. Indeed, the handlebars had advanced its handles 22 cm closer to the driver.
Comfort also means suitcases with “One-touch” opening, cruise control, better readability of the instrumentation and more ergonomic controls. Braking is entrusted to a large team: ABS, coupled Reflex braking, 2 discs of 300 mm at the front and one at the rear, all supported by 4 piston calipers
