The battle for the 2018 French road rally championship was heated until the end between two Aprilia 1100 Tuono: despite his victory at the Rallye des Ardennes, Bruno Schiltz must bow to the relentless Julien Toniutti for the title of champion of France 2018… Story.

Last round: titles to achieve

It was in Rocroi (08), during the 23rd Rallye des Ardennes organized by the Plateau de Rocroi motorcycle club, that the final of the 2018 French road rally championship was played this weekend..

The course, following the current trend of rally patterns, consists of three different loops. With a total length of 633 km, the 2018 Rallye des Ardennes beats the length record held by the with its 628 km.

On the program: a long first stage of 414 km, a second of 219 km, two chrono specials per loop ("Despite-everything" with a length of 2 km and "Haybes", a former special of a Moto Tour, long 2.8 km). So ten specials in total, six for the first stage and four for the second: a big chunk of driving for the 88 drivers entered in this final round of the 2018 championship..

Julien Toniutti starts this final with 19 points ahead of the provisional scratch classification (general) of the championship over Bruno Schiltz, reigning champion. Both are riding an Aprilia 1100 Tuono.

As for the categories, if Romain Cauquil (KTM 690 Duke CTM83) only has to validate his title of champion of France Rallye 2 thanks to his lead of 60 points on the second, Luc Breban (Husqvarna 701), this n is not the case for everyone.

In Maxi Rally SW motech, only 15 points separate the leader Julien Toniutti from his runner-up Bruno Schiltz, just like in Anciennes where Richard Pigeat (Suzuki GS 1000 S) is only 7 points ahead of his pursuer Thierry Pras (Kawasaki 250).

In Classics, Johan Daval (Honda 600) could have driven quietly by taking advantage of the absence on this final of the second in the provisional category (Jean-Luc Duris, 31 points behind), but he must however manage his race and not go to the fault: the third in the provisional, Gregory Palicot (Honda 600), is indeed present in the Ardennes and is currently at 59 points of Johan…

The 30 points awarded to the first of each stage (i.e. 60 points over the entire race) remain dangerous for the title !

A little margin to manage also on this final event in Rally 1 for Kevin Cheylan and his Ducati 937 Hypermotard with 30 points ahead of Maxime David (Kawasaki ZX6).

For the Rallye 3 (the "small" engines), Fabrice Dion on his KTM 390 Duke must also be careful because 39 points separate him from the second, Raphael Groland on his Honda 500 CB.

Nothing is definitely over in Side-cars either: 51 points separate the leaders Galvani / Bresse at the controls of their Kawasaki 1200 team from the second "three wheels", Bastien Boujot on Spyder Canam 1330.

Among the trophies, if those of the Espoirs and the Women are already largely acquired respectively by Julien Quentin and Sonia Maurel, everything is still possible for the Duos and the Veterans. The Assemat / Gratiot couple, at the controls of their Yamaha MT-10, must counter a possible comeback of the Yamaha MT-09 led by the Bernard father and son, 14 points behind  !

Finally, the situation is a little more comfortable for the Veterans: Christophe Overney (Husaberg 470) is 45 points ahead of Jacques Granjean’s Suzuki 1000 GSXS…
