Tschingderassabumm, who would have thought: Since 2010 the BMW R 1200 GS with air-cooled dohc boxer engine has been blowing the march thanks to the flap control in the exhaust duct. Which accessory exhaust can put a flourish on it?

Jorg Lohse

08/13/2013

You can literally feel the thieving grin when the BMW official takes a position on the function of the exhaust flap in the manifold outlet: “The exhaust flap, which is controlled by an electric servomotor and opening and closing cables, enables increased back pressure due to the variable passage cross-section in the lower to medium speed range with a small opening and thus more torque and pulling power, while the release of the full cross-section in the upper speed regions is conducive to maximum power, “explains BMW press spokesman Rudi Probst when asked by MOTORRAD. Sound. “

Noise development in the test zone must remain in the green area

Aha, now it’s out. The subject of “sound engineering”, previously widespread mainly on Italian and US motorcycles, is now also enjoying a high priority north of the Alps. Gone are the days when the boxers protteln well and honestly. With the dohc boxer engine, BMW R 1200 GS from model year 2010 onwards a lot of vocal power increased. Thanks to the flap just mentioned, which is supposed to provide quiet tones – when it matters. A look at the European regulation 97/24 / EG, which describes the permissible noise level of motorcycles in chapter 9. The driving noise, which is measured when accelerating from 50 km / h in second and third gear, is of particular legal relevance. 80 db (A) are permitted. What happens below or above is irrelevant. The main thing is that the noise level remains in the green area in the test zone. So cheers to the modern engine management, with which the opening angle of the flap can be adjusted to various parameters such as speed, engine load and gear selection.

Our measurements show how difficult it is to overcome this homologation hurdle: Even the original remains louder than permitted in terms of driving noise. For the suppliers of accessory exhaust systems, the air is getting thinner and thinner anyway. This is also shown by a look at the test bench curves of the 13 systems that compete with the original GS silencer. Very few manufacturers manage to squeeze anything more than the series performance out of the GS. For some, the power and torque curve is almost congruent with the original, some even rob the GS a little of its punch.

At best, they can score points for weight – savings of up to 60 percent are already possible compared to the original pot weighing more than five kilos.

Final evaluation and conclusion

12 silencers for the BMW R 1200 GS in the test

BILLION

The final rating of our product test.

From the screwdriver’s perspective, many accessory silencers are on the winning side, score with great workmanship and chic details as well as easy assembly and an exact fit. But then, on the test bench, the disillusionment follows. For many, the macabre realization of the shortest tuner joke is once again true: Series performance achieved! The times in which a double-digit percentage increase in power output could be expected by simply repositioning the end pot are finally over. Because it is also important to comply with the legally relevant driving noises. And 80 decibels are not a sticky stick, as our test shows. Overall, many providers have done a good job. The best, however, only two that manage to create an almost perfect mix of performance, weight and noise.

Short test: Kesstech High Performance

12 silencers for the BMW R 1200 GS in the test

Lohse

In a short test, the Kesstech High Performance was examined carefully.

A little push on the button, and the good, babbling boxer sound with the flap-controlled exhaust system from Kesstech (Tel. 0 95 28/9 50 05 60, www.kesstech.de) turns into a mighty thunder. The installation should be done by a specialist workshop, as the on-board network is tapped for the electronic control. The result is impressive: In the measuring range (stationary / driving noises) the automatic system closes the flap so that all values remain in the green area. And on the roll, the Kesstech-GS shows a full plus of six percent!

Expensive but well done. The high-performance exhaust from Kesstech has a flap control, which can optionally be ma-
closes manually or automatically. The two operating modes are activated via a push button in the cockpit. Price: 1739 euros (brushed stainless steel).
