The Suzuki Bandit 650 is one of the bestsellers in Germany. The accessories market is also developing rapidly. How do the offered retrofit silencers?

One of the most common conversion requests for motorcycles concerns the silencer. The series pots are usually too bulky, too inconspicuous and too heavy for their owners. Even if the
Exhaust the Bandit 650 doesn’t necessarily come across as bulky, at least the other two attributes apply. And if you have to get a replacement after a fall, you shouldn’t be happy about the juicy new price of around 550 euros.
The accessories market offers much cheaper alternatives.
And they should often even tease out a few more horsepower and sound more robust. If you want to know how the test candidates from Gotz, GPR, Holeshot, Hurric, Nikko, Shark and Streetfighter sound compared to the standard system
the sound recordings on the Internet at www.motorradonline.de. Which silencer is the most convincing in terms of sound is a must
everyone decide for themselves. The ratings for performance, fit, workmanship and installation effort can be found on the following pages.
The systems scored the most in the criteria
Collect top performance and performance development. The experts from the MOTORRAD test department paid particular attention to the development of power and paid attention to every slight drop in the power and torque curves in the curves determined on the test bench, which are clearly noticeable in practice.
MOTORRAD determined stationary and driving noises in accordance with the applicable regulations (see also Noise Measurements box) on a cordoned-off airport site. To the exhaust-
The inspectors from TuV Sud in Boblingen took care of the search.
There were no points for the measured noise and exhaust gas values, but only test candidates who met both the Ge-
noise limit values as well as the specified exhaust gas limit value (see box catalytic converter problem on page 69) were given
a final MOTORRAD verdict. And that is ultimately
shockingly few subjects. As is often the case with silencer tests, the driving noise hurdle turned out to be too high for many specimens. For some it is even too high. How the affected accessory dampers got the EC type approval is simply a mystery.
Is it exactly what a lot of motorcyclists want? an EC-approved system with the most robust sound possible. But you should be aware that, despite the test seal on the final pot, you can get into difficulties during an inspection.

Noise measurements – be careful, decibels

A particularly sensitive topic, not only when testing an exhaust system, but above all when inspecting road traffic. Because the police have no mercy when someone is on the road with an exhaust system that is too loud. So far, there has only been the option of measuring stationary noise at the roadside. The tolerance limit is five dB (A) above the value entered in the vehicle documents.

If the law enforcement officers have doubts that it is a regular damper, they are entitled to confiscate the motorcycle for a driving noise measurement. In any case, this threatens all vehicles that exceed the tolerance limit during the stationary noise measurement. Then it means: either drive up with an approved system at the next opportunity or agree to an expensive driving noise measurement.

Standing noise measurement: The microphone is positioned at the level of the exhaust outlet at an angle of 45 degrees to the vehicle’s longitudinal axis and at a distance of 0.5 meters. Measurements are made at half the nominal speed (for motorcycles whose nominal-
speed is over 5000 rpm – which is the case with almost all models). The result is the highest of three measured values, rounded to full dB (A).

Driving noise measurement: A large area of normal asphalt serves as the measuring section, which must not have any sound-reflecting objects within 50 meters of the microphone. The motorcycle approaches the measuring section in second and third gear at 50 km / h (see illustration). At the beginning of the route, the driver fully opens the gas and accelerates to the end, where he suddenly closes the gas again. Two passages from the right and two from the left are recorded in each aisle. The total of eight measured values are rounded and then a dB (A) tolerance is deducted. The mean value of this ultimately results in the all-important driving noise value.

Vehicle requirements: The test vehicle for homologation or re-measurements of accessory silencers may, in series trim, exceed the value entered in the papers – in the case of the Bandit 79 dB (A) – by a maximum of three dB (A), but only by the valid limit of 80 dB (A) one dB (A). As a result, the Bandit can reach a maximum of 81 dB (A). The stationary noise value, with the Bandit entered 89 dB (A), may also be three dB (A) above the entered type approval value. The legislature does not prescribe a limit value here.

During the test, MOTORRAD allows the accessory silencers to meet the tolerance limits permitted for the series system. In the case of an official homologation, the retrofit dampers would have to comply exactly with the driving noise value of the original system, so strictly speaking they should not be louder than the measured 79 dB (A) of the standard Bandit.

KAT problem

Retrofit silencers always ensure
Conversation piece. The end of the 90s was
Many buyers of accessory systems with an EC operating permit do not realize that they no longer have to carry any papers with them, as was still necessary in previous years for systems with ABE. Even a number of police officers did not know anything about it for a long time. A clearly visible badge or embossing (see photo) on the damper is sufficient.
Since this year there has been uncertainty as to whether retrofit systems have to have a catalytic converter, even if the production model has one. After all, motorcycles built in 1989 or later now have to undergo an exhaust emission test every two years-
search (AUK) ?? commercial vehicles
even once a year. The situation is tricky. All motorcycles homologated according to Euro 3 from 2006 onwards that have a Kat as standard are only allowed to
a retrofit damper can be retrofitted with a catalytic converter. Otherwise you will likely have problems with the exhaust emission limits at the AUK.
The situation is different with older motorcycles, for example motorcycles approved according to Euro 2. Even if they are equipped with a catalytic converter as standard, retrofit silencers without a catalytic converter can be installed. However, only if they received an EC type approval before May 18, 2006. If the value specified for the motorcycle (by the manufacturer) is exceeded at the AUK
should, is there just a note in the test report? at least the surveillance associations in most federal states have been instructed accordingly. The upper limit for the decisive CO content is in any case 4.5 percent by volume. And a properly adjusted motorcycle should be able to do that even without a catalytic converter.
That in the case of the present test Suzuki allows a limit value of 4.5 volume percent CO for the Bandit 650 in spite of the (unregulated) catalytic converter, appears at the latest when looking at the significantly better results (see table on page 66).
incomprehensible. Nevertheless, it is gratifying that all exhaust systems examined are virtually clean-
men emerged and, with one exception, even fell below the value for motorcycles with a regulated catalytic converter (0.3 volume percent CO).

Conclusion

The original muffler cuts under consideration of the MOTORRAD evaluation criteria
best of all: perfectly fitting, decent performance and absolutely legal. Just what the price and
In terms of weight, it is in some cases significantly higher than the range of accessories. The pot buyer has to decide for himself whether one is prepared to accept a loss in quality for the lower costs. Just as he has to bear the risk if he chooses one of the retrofit dampers that are too loud. These specimens did not receive a MOTORRAD judgment, even if some of them are blatantly lighter than the Japanese original and show off with impressive performance.
