Never without!

Yes, there are hot days when your hands swim in gloves. But is that why leaving the most vulnerable parts of the body unprotected when riding a motorcycle? Just don’t! If something breaks on it, it takes a long time to get things right again. We have tested 18 summer gloves for motorcyclists:

Klaus Herder

06/18/2014

There is a group of motorcyclists for whom appeals to wear gloves do not run the risk of being branded as a senior teacher: motorcyclists who have had hand injuries before. There is hardly any other place where the human body takes so much time to heal. And the likelihood of complications and subsequent impairments that you feel every day is probably nowhere greater than on the 27 bones of a hand.

In the hierarchy of must-have motorcycle equipment, the glove comes second. After the helmet and before the boot. Jeans, light textile jacket? Not nice, but venial sins, because a neat thigh or arm scrape can usually be cured reasonably well, and if it still looks bad afterwards, it can be covered if necessary. But broken hands? D rather not!

And yet, especially in the summer months, there are a lot of full posts on the move, which wear an important leather body and the most expensive of all replica helmets with the darkest of all visors, but prefer to leave their fingers unprotected. Also with the just-for-once argument: sometimes to the gas station, sometimes around the block, sometimes to the buddy.

Note (attention: senior teacher mode on): Accidents rarely happen on the perfectly prepared holiday tour in the Alps, and also not during hundreds of kilometers on the highway. Accidents mostly happen in occasional situations, because some snore bag disregards the right of way or the gravel on the house route surprisingly provides variety.

Target group: sporty touring riders, focus on naked bikes

These considerations guided us when selecting the category for this year’s MOTORRAD glove test. No arctic-proven high-end grippers with an atomic bomb-proof climate membrane, no super athlete finger cots for 45-minute stretching on a closed route. No, this time we dedicated ourselves to – to put it bluntly – perfectly normal gloves for everyday motorcycling at home in summer.

Accordingly, the requirement profile that the relevant providers received as a test invitation was: Summer gloves with cuffs, no climate membrane, unlined or only thin lining; Target group: sporty touring riders, focus on naked bikes, no racing gloves.

So 18 models arrived in the editorial office. The price range ranged from just under 35 to 179 euros and the first impression of “better work glove” until “but a racer”. The Rennerle suspicion turned out to be unfounded, because even if some models (especially the test winner) look mighty sporty, they all meet the requirements profile described, in which comfort and suitability for everyday use play very important roles.

Since MOTORRAD product tests are not static issues either, the test criteria were expanded this year – contact with a real hand specialist (who also drives a motorcycle herself!) Made it possible. The full practice has so far found its way into the category of glove tests “Comfort”.

This year there is another evaluation category: ergonomics. What normally describes how people-friendly a workplace is designed (roughly simplified), evaluates in this story to what extent a glove is durable “work” on the motorcycle, i.e. on the handlebars as well as clutch, handbrake and throttle grip and counteracts early signs of fatigue (tension, numbness, etc.).

This can, but does not necessarily have to have something to do with the short-term comfort that is felt. What is felt to be quite pleasant on the aforementioned “ just ” tour, because, for example, sitting comfortably or snugly, can be counterproductive for long-term operation if the fit is not right or if protectors are not where they actually belong.

A large ankle protector alone is not enough

Lots of points in terms of comfort, lots of points in terms of ergonomics – with this you can get half the points harvest. However, a good performance in the safety category is also very important for the final ranking. A large (and hopefully well-lined) ankle protector alone is not enough. The metacarpus sits above it, below the fingers, and both also need cushioning protection.

The outer edge of the hand is also at risk, at least material doubling should be standard here. The ball of the hand and even the forearm in the cuff area also deserve protection. A sensible anti-slip protection (fixation on the wrist) and an anti-slip coating or appropriate trimming of the gripping area are also on the safety wish list.

But despite all the upholstery and protector euphoria, it must not be forgotten that the fingers and thumb must be able to stretch and bend well – which brings us back to ergonomics. To what extent the test participants meet the requirements can be guessed from the data boxes and the table below. Nothing more and nothing less, because, as with almost all clothing tests, the following applies here as well: Personal favorites can only be found by trying them on thoroughly. Take it!

Alpinestars SP-1

mps photo studio

Alpinestars SP-1.

PROVIDERS: Alpinestars, Tel. 00 39/04 23/52 86 (Italy), www.alpinestars.com; PRICE: 129.95 euros; SIZES:
S to 3XL; TO DYE: Black, white, red / white / black, red / black / neon yellow; MATERIAL: Upper hand leather, lower-
hand reinforced with “Clarino suede”, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 257 grams per pair (2XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Vietnam

Plus: Good grip, no wrinkles or bulges on the palm; long and practical to close cuff; very good fixation on the wrist possible; good to very good safety equipment; proper processing.

Minus: Size spread not practical, fingers sometimes much too long; relatively narrow entry; very unsatisfactory fit, distance between ankle protection and wrist is not correct; quite ambitious price.

Conclusion: The initially good grip feeling is in the long run impaired by the unsatisfactory fit. From an ergonomic point of view, the well-equipped and well-made glove is quite a disappointment – a relatively expensive one too.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Bering Match

Bering Match.

PROVIDERS: Shark, Tel. 0 41 08/45 80 00, www.shark-helme.com; PRICE: 69.90 euros; SIZES: 8 to 13 (S to 3XL); TO DYE: Black, black / red / white; MATERIAL: Upper hand textile / leather, underhand goatskin reinforced with “Amara” (suede synthetic leather), lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 156 grams per pair (11); COUNTRY OF PRODUCTION: Indonesia

Plus: No wrinkles or bulges on the palm; extremely good ventilation; very good fixation on the wrist possible; good safety equipment with very well padded ankle protector and practical hand edge protection; satisfactory processing.

Minus: Unsatisfactory fit, length ratios incorrect, thumbs way too short; unnecessarily high pressure on the thumb saddle joint – tiring in the long run; Seams very clearly noticeable.

Conclusion: Slipping in for the first time and feeling good is quickly followed by disillusionment: the fit is not right at all. The good protector details can no longer tear out much. But the same applies here: it’s best to try it yourself, maybe it’ll fit …

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Buse Airway

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Buse Airway

PROVIDERS: Buse, Tel. 0 24 71/1 26 90, www.buese.com; PRICE: 74.95 euros; SIZES: 8 to 13; TO DYE: Black-and-white; MATERIAL: Upper material 72% cowhide and 25% polyamide, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 222 grams per pair (11); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: China

Plus: Very comfortable, no pressing seams; many details for mobility and fatigue-free driving (including seams and protector placement); good fixation on the wrist possible; good safety equipment, ankle protectors very well placed.

minus: Slightly indirect feel, slight wrinkling on the palm possible; Cuff only rudimentary available.

Conclusion: An all-round solid performance, but there is still more to it when it comes to grip. The very short, almost gauntlet-free glove is perfect for cozy summer evenings. When a more sporty approach is required, others can do more.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

minus: Very slight folds at the transition between the palm and fingers possible; very ambitious price.

Conclusion: It goes without saying that the Italians send sports gloves into the race – pleasantly comfortable sports gloves with a lot of well thought-out safety details and excellent ergonomics. The price hurts, but the product makes you happy.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good (MOTORRAD test winner)

DIFI Chase Air

DIFI Chase Air

PROVIDERS: Motoport, Tel. 0 44 51/91 52 00, www.motoport.de; PRICE: 59.95 euros; SIZES: XS to 4XL; COLOUR: Black;
MATERIAL: Upper material goatskin, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 155 grams per pair (XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: China

plus: Good to very good fit with good mobility; good, relatively comfortable grip; extremely good ventilation;
good fixation on the wrist possible; good security equipment; good workmanship; fair price.

minus: Slight folds on the palm; Cuff a little too short and not to vary in width.

Conclusion: The safety features are well hidden, the color scheme is very subtle – the Chase Air shows true understatement, it completely lacks macho behavior. A comfortable, ergonomically successful companion for summery, just-over-the-house tours.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Furygan Iron Summer

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Furygan Iron Summer

PROVIDERS: Jopa Racing Products, Tel. 00 31/5 47/38 27 71 (The Netherlands), www.jopa.nl; PRICE: 79.95 euros; SIZES: S to 3XL; COLOUR: Black; MATERIAL: Upper material goatskin, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 228 grams per pair (XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Indonesia

Plus: Satisfactory grip, no wrinkles or bulges on the palm; long and practical to close cuff; very good fixation on the wrist possible; good safety equipment with very well padded ankle protector; good workmanship.

Minus: Very unsatisfactory fit; Fingers a little too long, thumb much too long; Fingers overall very stiff, in the long run
uncomfortable; Inside seams can be clearly felt and can press.

Conclusion: In terms of ergonomics, it is one of the weakest test candidates, the fit is weak. The fingers are hindered in their mobility, which can lead to premature fatigue. It’s a shame, because otherwise the Asian Frenchman is okay.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Germas Miami

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Germas Miami

PROVIDERS: Germas, Tel. 09 11/63 50 08, www.germas.de; PRICE: 59.95 euros; SIZES: S to 3XL; COLOUR: Black;
MATERIAL: Upper material cowhide, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 144 grams per pair (XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Pakistan

Plus: Very good grip, very comfortable and cuddly; good ventilation; practical cuff length.

Minus: Unsatisfactory fit, fingers slightly undercut, otherwise glove too wide; Below-average safety equipment, no protectors on the fingers, inadequate fixation on the wrist (only elastic band).

Conclusion: Very light, very comfortable – but actually only really useful on summer short trips at a leisurely pace, because the safety equipment is not overly lavish and the rather mediocre fit is clearly at odds with long-distance comfort.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Germot San Antonio

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Germot San Antonio.

PROVIDERS: Germot, Tel. 0 61 03/45 91 00, www.germot.de; PRICE: 34.90 euros; SIZES: 6 to 13; Color: Black; MATERIAL: Upper material 85% leather and 15% polyamide, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 190 grams per pair (11); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Pakistan

plus: Very comfortable, good mobility; good fixation on the wrist possible; practical cuff length; proper processing; very attractive price.

minus: Much too wide, undefined seat, very indirect grip feeling; Fingers a little too long; Inside seams can squeeze a bit; Safety equipment not consistent enough (middle finger unprotected).

Conclusion: The great feeling of well-being – at least initially, but very quickly, a fit that is not very practical prevents long-term fun. However, the extremely attractive price tempts you to try it yourself: Maybe you have the San Antonio hand?!

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Haveba Arlas

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Haveba Arlas.

PROVIDERS: TWS Central Europe, Tel. 0 74 32/22 05 95, www.haveba.de; PRICE: 69.00 euros; SIZES: 7 to 12; Color: Black; MATERIAL: Upper material cowhide, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 253 grams per pair (10); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Pakistan

Plus: Good grip with good mobility; no or only very little wrinkling on the palm; proper fit, correct finger lengths; long and practical to close cuff; satisfactory to good security-
equipment; proper processing.

Minus: Inadequate wrist fixation (only elastic band), can be removed very easily if necessary.

Conclusion: A solid performance through and through. The Arlas only scores above average in terms of comfort, but it collects points in the other categories and does not allow itself any real weakness. Apart from the poor wrist fixation.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Hero Air Stream II

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Hero Air Stream II.

PROVIDERS: Held, Tel. 0 83 21/6 64 60, www.held.de; PRICE: 99.95 euros; SIZES: 7 to 12; Color: Black; MATERIAL: Backhand polyester with cowhide trim, backhand kangaroo leather, backhand lining Kevlar and Coolmax; WEIGHT: 267 grams per pair (10); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Pakistan

Plus: Excellent grip with a surprisingly high level of comfort; no wrinkles on the palm; good fit, very clearly defined fit, correct finger lengths; long and practical to close cuff; good to very good safety equipment; very good workmanship.

Minus: Poor wrist fixation (only elastic band), can be easily removed if necessary, a bit stiff despite the super soft leather, as the fingers have to work a little too hard against the protectors.

Conclusion: A little more mobility, plus a Velcro strap on the wrist, and the Air Stream II would have deserved a clear “very good”. But even so, the tightly fitting glove is very close to the ideal of the summer glove for all cases. Security-wise anyway.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Icon Overlord Long

mps photo studio

Icon Overlord Long.

PROVIDERS: Parts Europe, Tel. 0 65 01/96 95 20 00, www.partseurope.eu; PRICE: 157.07 euros; SIZES: S to XXL (black to 4XL); COLORS: Black, White, Red, Blue; MATERIAL: Upper hand goatskin, underhand kangaroo leather, upper hand lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 327 grams per pair (XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: China

Plus: Excellent, very direct grip feeling, nevertheless comfortable, no annoying inner seams; no wrinkles on the palm; correct finger lengths; very long and practical to close cuff; very good fixation on the wrist possible; good to very good safety equipment (exception see below); good to very good workmanship.

Minus: Knuckle protector is missing over the middle finger; Fit not optimal, a lot of pressure on the middle joint of the little finger (in the long run, numbness may occur); Dressing and undressing a bit more complex; heavy price.

Conclusion: Shabby look in gloves? Not really, what looks a bit “rustic” at first turns out to be a comfort-enhancing production with external seams. The grip is great, and if you don’t have a problem with your little finger, you will love the Overlord Long.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Minus: Inadequate fixation on the wrist (elastic band only); Inside seams can be clearly felt in parts; Thumb a little too long; Dressing and undressing is a bit more complex.

Conclusion: The Carbon Mesh III quietly deserves the buyer’s tip, because in addition to the good grip and great mobility, the glove also offers a convincing fit. Safety equipment and workmanship are also good, the price is okay.

MOTORCYCLE rating: good (MOTORCYCLE purchase tip)

Minus: Slight wrinkles on the palm possible; Velcro straps on the edge of the cuff may be a bit short; heavy price.

Conclusion: There were real glove professionals at work who also understand a lot about ergonomics. On top of that there is the best material in a top processing as well as a lot of safety and comfort features. It’s not cheap, but it’s definitely worth the money.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Polo Drive Breeze

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

mps photo studio

Polo Drive Breeze.

PROVIDERS: Polo, Tel. 0 21 65/8 44 04 00, www.polo-motorrad.de; PRICE: 39.95 euros; SIZES: S to XXL; COLOUR: Black; MATERIAL: Upper material goatskin, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 112 grams per pair (XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Pakistan

Plus: Extremely light and very well ventilated, quite comfortable on short trips; very easy to put on and take off; satisfactory processing; attractive price.

Minus: Grip and fit below average, strong wrinkles on the palm, inner seams clearly noticeable; insufficient fixation on the wrist (only elastic band); practically no safety equipment.

Conclusion: Let’s see it in a positive light: wearing this very puristic glove makes more sense than driving without gloves at all. Just about acceptable for a trip to the gas station in jeans and sneakers. Beyond that, rather not.

MOTORRAD judgment: sufficient

Rev’it Bliss

Plus: Very comfortable and plush with good mobility; proper fit with matching finger length; relatively easy to put on and take off; practical cuff length; very good fixation on the wrist possible; satisfactory security equipment; good to very good workmanship; price.

Minus: Indirect grip feeling due to the somewhat slippery lining; slightly thicker folds on the palm.

Conclusion: Another hard-working point collector who at the end of the day might be a bit surprised that the bottom line is “good”. There are hardly any real highlights, but neither are there any real weaknesses. And the price is absolutely fair.

Conclusion: Very strong in terms of mobility; The material and workmanship are also right, and comfort is not neglected, especially on hot days. Lots of great details, but there is still a lot of (security) improvement potential.

Segura Webster.

PROVIDERS: Shark, Tel. 0 41 08/45 80 00, www.shark-helme.com; PRICE: 69.90 euros; SIZES: 8 to 13 (S to 3XL);

Plus: Satisfactory grip, relatively tight, but still comfortable fit, proper fit with good mobility; practical cuff length; very good fixation on the wrist possible; satisfactory to good security equipment; satisfactory processing.

Minus: Inside seams can be clearly felt in parts; Velcro straps on the cuff edge may be a bit short.

Vanucci Competizione II.

PROVIDERS: Louis, Tel. 0 40/73 41 93 60, www.louis.de; PRICE: 99.95 euros; SIZES: XS to 3XL (black), M to 3XL (multicolored); TO DYE: Black, Black / Red / White, Black / Blue / White; MATERIAL: Upper material cow and goat leather, lining 100% polyester; WEIGHT: 276 grams per pair (XL); COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: China

Plus: Cuff length and width very practical; very good fixation on the wrist possible; very good safety equipment, well padded ankle protector, effective hand edge and ball protection; good workmanship.

Minus: Comfortable to wear due to noticeable inner seams and slight folds on the palm somewhat restricted, feeling of grip slightly indirect; Fingers relatively stiff, high resistance when gripping, tiring in the long run; Velcro strap cover on the wrist has no effect – the latch sits on the top.

Conclusion: The product developers may have overshot the mark when it comes to safety equipment, because the lavish protectors are at the expense of mobility. But okay for tough guys with muscle reserves.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

18 summer gloves for motorcyclists in the test

Herder

18 pairs of gloves on the treatment table: The trusted occupational therapist lends a loving hand.

Where are the temperatures in early summer already at the beginning of the year? Clear case: in the south of France. And so these gloves (three pairs per model in sizes M, L and XL) were part of the annual “MOTORRAD clothing test week” in February. In the vicinity of Marseille, during the day, a Yamaha MT-09 drove around the winding country roads to check the gloves in practice on the brake and clutch levers as well as the throttle grip. The late shifts were then used for dry exercises, during which the safety potential, the equipment and the processing quality could be checked.

Another trip took the finger cots to Ulm, where the hand therapist Sabine Haas-Schinzel in her “Danube practice hand in hand” extensively tested the ergonomic qualities of the test candidates, for example assessing the gloves under the aspects of mobility and freedom from fatigue.

3 questions to hand therapist Sabine Haas-Schinzel

“A good fit is the first step”

Which hand injuries occur when a motorcycle falls, how serious are the consequences?
There may be breaks in the wrist, metacarpus, or fingers and thumb. Finger fractures in particular can quickly become a problem if the fracture does not heal exactly in the correct axis. This can cause the finger to rotate incorrectly, which can lead to problems with fine motor skills or power metering when the fist is closed. In addition, tendons and nerves can be damaged by fractures. Movement and sensitivity disorders are then the consequences. Apparently harmless abrasions on the hand cause problems if they go deeper and nerves or tendons are injured. Or there is a risk of infection in the form of a hand phlegmon if the wound becomes infected.

Sounds really tempting. What should you pay attention to when buying so that as little as possible happens in the worst case??
In order to avoid an accident in the first place, active safety is required first. And a good fit is the first step towards choosing the right glove. In order to be able to react quickly and not to tire prematurely, the good mobility of all fingers and the thumb is essential. A secure hold in the glove ensures that the clutch and brake levers can be easily operated. Not to forget: You should feel really comfortable in the glove. That might sound banal, but the most important prerequisite for a glove to be able to protect is that it is put on at all. Always! Even on the supposedly harmless “take it easy tour” around the block – that’s where most of the time happens.

Have a personal test favorite?
There are some models that I really liked. The Klim Induction Glove is great for my hands.

Conclusion: The two most expensive models end up at the top of the final bill – so far, so annoying from the consumer’s point of view. To put it more positively: You can clearly see in the best placed what all the money is invested in. Namely in know-how, equipment and choice of materials.

But the more price-sensitive motorcyclist does not have to worry, because one or the other candidate from the broad field of with “Good” judged gloves is always worth a purchase decision. When it comes to wearing comfort – after all, one of the test criteria with the highest number of points – the models from hero and iXS in no way inferior to the first two. On the contrary.

And the purchase decision doesn’t get any easier, because if you take a closer look at the satisfactory department – usually a no-go area – you will see that it is the official one “Good” not really much is missing and there is only a seven point difference between tenth and 17th place. In other words: the very personal test drive can lead to “satisfying” this time “very good” is.
