Ixs Saragossa / Checker Evo: press stud, Velcro or loop? The Ixs designers didn’t want to commit themselves and offer all three options at once. In practice, however, this complicated structure quickly becomes annoying.

Rukka R-Android: The 4000 kilometers gave the Finn station wagon a lot of trouble. No functional failures, but the surface quality deteriorated significantly by the halfway point due to the formation of threads and pebbles.

Klim Badlands Pro: Ideal when zippers can be grasped quickly and securely, e.g. B. to be able to quickly open or close the air supply when stopping at traffic lights. Practical: the opposing zippers at Klim.

Stadler Bent GTX / Line GTX: Is often avoided: Covering zips with Velcro. Because otherwise a pressing bulge will result. On the other hand, the zipper is pushed open again and again while driving. And that’s annoying.

Dane Osted / Jylland.

Providers: Motoport, phone 0 44 56/89 95 71 00, www.motoport.de;

Price: Jacket 649 euros, trousers 399 euros, complete 1048 euros;

Sizes: Jacket men 48 to 62 and women 34 to 46, trousers men 48 to 60 and 98 to 114;

To dye: Jacket in silver gray / black / red and black, trousers in black;

Weight: 3.7 kg (size 50);

Materials: Outer fabric made of polyamide, lining and removable thermal lining made of polyester;

Climate membrane: Gore-Tex;

Country of Manufacture: Indonesia

Fit / comfort: Sits smoothly and comfortably. The firm seat is retained even at high freeway speeds. Small minus: always present pressure points on the knee.

Weather protection: Disturbing drafts on the sleeves (zippers press open) and on the neck (weak magnetic closure), otherwise solid protection against bad weather conditions and at low temperatures.

Security: Poor protector package. Back and hips are only protected at an additional cost.

Equipment / processing: Very well made, but fails with details such as the pocket arrangement on the pants.

Conclusion: Ouch, Dane The station wagon almost breaks the 1000 euro barrier, but it only offers poor protector equipment. In practice, the suit shows no real failure, but small weaknesses in detail can be annoying.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Providers: Held, phone 0 83 21/6 64 60, www.held.de;

Climate membrane: Gore-Tex;

Country of Manufacture: Vietnam

Fit / comfort: Scores with its low weight and a crisp, sporty seat that does not get out of shape even at high cruising speeds.

Weather protection: Thanks to a wide range of ventilation options and a cooling Coolmax lining, first choice, especially on hot days – the jacket’s wide front inlet is especially great. Very good rain protection.

Security: Although only the usual standard equipment without back and hips, the protectors fit perfectly and provide excellent coverage.

Equipment / processing: Well done, many well thought-out details.

Conclusion: Great all-season combination at an attractive price. hero shows that decent suits for long-distance motorcyclists are offered well below 1000 euros. Just under 100 euros invested in extra protectors – you don’t need more!

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

IXS Saragossa / Checker Evo

IXS Saragossa / Checker Evo.

Providers: Hostettler, phone 0 76 31/1 80 40, www.ixs.de;

Price: Jacket 459 euros, trousers 299.90 euros, complete 758.90 euros;

Sizes: Jacket men S to 5XL, women DS to D5XL, trousers men S to 6XL, women DXS to D5XL as well as short and long sizes;

To dye: Jacket in black, black / red, black / fluo yellow and gray / black, trousers in black;

Weight: 4.2 kg (size L);

Materials: Outer fabric made of polyamide, lining made of polyester / polyamide, removable thermal lining made of polyester;

Climate membrane: Gore-Tex;

Country of Manufacture: Vietnam

Fit / comfort: Doesn’t sit as snugly as the test field. The jacket puffs up quickly at high speeds and does not offer the flexibility of other suits when driving actively in the mountains.

Weather protection: Classic equipment package for year-round use. Pleasant ventilation function, acceptable insulation. The really good rain protection is greatly reduced by the low collar.

Security: Better than the standard: joint and back protectors, but sizes are tight.

Equipment / processing: Quality design, but very playful structure.

Conclusion: Textile suit in an old-school look. Compared to the rest of the test field, there is no real aha effect on the 4000 kilometer lap. Neuralgic point in bad weather: the low-cut collar. But the price-performance ratio is right.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Klim Badlands Pro

Klim Badlands Pro.

Providers: Klim Europe, phone 00 41/2 13 21 87 4200 41/2 13 21 87 42 (Switzerland), www.klim.com;

Price: Jacket 799 euros, trousers 599 euros, complete 1398 euros;

Sizes: Jacket men S to 3XL, trousers men 30 to 42 and Tall-32 to Tall-40;

To dye: Jacket in black, black / gray and black / fluo yellow, trousers in black and black / gray;

Weight: 5.6 kg (size XL);

Materials: Outer fabric made of polyamide (nylon), lining made of polyester;

Climate membrane: Gore-Tex;

Country of Manufacture: China

You’ll need Skype CreditFree via Skype

Fit / comfort: Despite the comparatively high weight (on the level of a full-size leather suit) it is still comfortable to wear. Can be trimmed very well “to figure” through clever details such as an integrated kidney belt.

Weather protection: Very good moisture protection up to the pulled-up and tight-fitting collar. Perfectly ventilated for hot summer days. But too poorly equipped for cool days.

Security: In addition to joint, hip and back protectors, it also offers protective padding for the chest. But not on the level of a “real” protector.

Equipment / processing: Well processed, sensibly thought out details.

Conclusion: The US brand Klim, which is still unknown in this country, knows how to convince. Above all, the Badlands Pro can define a new standard with its sophisticated safety package. Despite the high price, it is not an all-season all-rounder.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Rukka R-Android

6 upper-class textile suits in the 4000 km test

markus-jahn.com

Rukka R-Android.

Providers: Rukka, phone 0 40/5 51 10 55, www.rukka.de;

Price: Jacket 949 euros, pants 699 euros, complete 1648 euros;

Sizes: Jacket and trousers men 46 to 62;

Colour: Black;

Weight: 5.9 kg (size 52);

Materials: Outer fabric made of polyamide, lining and removable thermal lining made of polyester;

Climate membrane: Gore-Tex;

Country of Manufacture: China

Fit / comfort: Rukka-typical first-class seat, which is why the station wagon can take part in sporty gymnastics on small mountain passes as well as brisk turns on the autobahn. In the long run, however, you can feel the extremely high weight – especially due to the heavy protectors.

Weather protection: From head to toe, not just prepared for bad weather: waterproof zippers, removable extra collar, an extremely warm down lining for the cold spell, pleasant air inlets for hot days.

Security: Except for the chest, complete and neatly positioned protectors on the joints, hips and back.

Equipment / processing: Well thought out. However, the outer fabric shows unsightly signs of wear after the trip.

Conclusion: The most expensive suit in the test leaves the most unsightly impression after the tour of Corsica in terms of surface quality. It’s a shame, because otherwise the Finnish brand can score extremely well, from wearing comfort to weather protection.

MOTORRAD verdict: Good

Stadler Bent GTX / Line GTX

6 upper-class textile suits in the 4000 km test

markus-jahn.com

Stadler Bent GTX / Line GTX.

Providers: Stadler, phone 0 85 43/9 62 00, www.stadler-bekleidung.de;

Price: Jacket from 999 euros, trousers from 589 euros, complete 1588 euros (ten percent surcharge for custom-made products);

Sizes: Jacket and trousers men 48 to 62, women 36 to 46, as well as short and long sizes;

To dye: Jacket in black / gray / red and black / gray / platinum, trousers in black / silver and gray / silver;

Weight: 5.5 kg (size 52);

Materials: Outer fabric and lining made of polyamide, removable thermal jacket made of polyester;

Climate membrane: Gore-Tex;

Country of Manufacture: Croatia

Fit / comfort: Weighs a lot, but is comparatively light and supple to wear. Almost perfect sizes and proportions, which can also be further customized on request.

Weather protection: Smart rain protection with a separate Gore-Tex inlay in the jacket and trousers, which can be worn either under or over. Excellent ventilation in summer, and a warm softshell jacket is available for cold days.

Security: The chest is missing, but otherwise scores Stadler thanks to an optimally fitting protector package.

Equipment / processing: Class and made absolutely valuable.

Conclusion: A purchase for life? In any case, the Stadler suit can take the 4,000-kilometer tour without any noticeable signs of use. We particularly like the practical features such as the Gore-Tex inlay designed in the style of a rain suit.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good.

Equipped with protectors

The bottom line is a good result, which is summarized in our balance sheet after the 4,000-kilometer test lap from Stuttgart to Corsica and back. But: there is still plenty of room for improvement. Especially when it comes to security. One can expect premium brands to take on a certain pioneering role. It is all the more astonishing that so far only Klim has the topic of chest protectors on the screen – although it is still far from the requirements of the future standard. Stadler just manages “very well”, Held is a tip for price-conscious buyers.

Buy right: textile suits for touring riders

6 upper-class textile suits in the 4000 km test

Markus Jahn

Drizzle on the descent, brisk stages on the motorway, icy wind at the top of the pass, sweltering city crossings in the south. Our tips for choosing clothes.

collar

Must make a perfect transition to the helmet. Otherwise there is a risk of water ingress when it rains. Must be easy to close. Perfect when it has a flutter-free ventilation function for hot summer days.

Modification options
With or without thermal lining, large air inlets, if necessary can the climate membrane also be removed? Without quickly adjustable straps to adjust the width of the sleeves, legs and hips, the suit quickly mutates into an annoying flutter.

Bags

There doesn’t have to be tons of storage options. As a rule, two large (and waterproof!) Outer pockets on the jacket are sufficient (e.g. for a compact camera), plus two (padded) inner pockets for papers, wallet and smartphone. Comfortable: when the trousers have two (slanted!) Pockets.

Transition jacket / pants
Well-coordinated combinations are characterized by the fact that the jacket and pants overlap a lot on the back and do not throw any annoying creases at the front. Ideal coupling: a long connection zipper.

Protectors
The minimum equipment includes fully fitted, CE-tested impact absorbers for shoulders, elbows and knees. The hips and back are best protected by decent protectors. Particularly progressive manufacturers also arm the chest with standardized fall pads.

Get a real blow

Joint protectors: standard shape for Dane (r.), Oversize style for Rukka (center), anatomically optimized for Held (l.)

Protectors are considered crumple zones for motorcyclists. But how effectively can they really filter out a hard impact? The bone protectors of our test suits have to show their colors on the drop test stand.

The thumb test in the store – a nice try to examine the protective equipment of the jacket and pants. But not any more. How well the protectors used in the station wagon actually work can only be seen when they are taken out of the pockets and landed on a real drop test stand. The first analysis takes place through a visual inspection. Motorcycle protectors must be marked according to the relevant standards – only then can they be called that. The standard that the protector complies with must be clearly indicated by an imprint. The basis is a European standard (EN), which is now available in three versions: EN 1621-1 for joint protectors, -2 for back protectors and -4 for motorcyclist airbags. What is missing in the series? Line three, of course. This does not yet exist, but it is already in the final coordination phase. In all likelihood, EN 1621-3 will describe the requirements for chest protectors from 2016.

The test procedure is pretty much the same for all types of protectors. On the drop test stand, a five-kilo steel body hits the protector from a height of one meter without braking. Underneath is a steel anvil in which a load cell determines the residual force. Depending on the type of protector, the falling body and anvil contour differ, as do the permissible limit values.

If you want to be sure that the protectors in your station wagon meet the latest standards, you should make sure that the year 2012 is indicated for the joint protectors and 2014 for the back protectors.

Textile suits are now as precise as leather

First visual inspection of the station wagon before departure. Only textiles are used for driving. In terms of passive safety, leather offers the best values, but when it comes to active safety, textiles are and will remain unbeaten. Even if some manufacturers are now trying to make leather suitable for all weather conditions by means of climate membrane constructions: The balancing act of delivering comfort on both wet and cold days as well as sunny and hot days is much better achieved with synthetic fiber suits.

The fact that textile suits hang around like a misshapen sack on the body and have to inflate like a balloon when driving on the highway has meanwhile been done away with. Modern Cordura fabrics (see material ABC) with a correspondingly high percentage of stretch ensure that textile suits can now fit as precisely as a leather suit – but still offer significantly more comfort. A pleasant side effect: the protectors also sit noticeably more precisely.

Which textile suit is the best for every day??

And while we are on the subject of spending money: Although we are in the upper-class textile combination, some manufacturers have to pay extra when it comes to passive safety. When it comes to protector equipment, full equipment including hip and back protectors has not yet established itself, even if the price breaks the 1000 euro barrier (e.g. Dane). This test point will become even more acute in 2016 when the long-awaited chest protector standard EN 1621-3 is finally adopted. So far, only one provider in this test field has shown itself to be armed to protect the front with a padded insert (Klim). However, it is still far from what a real chest protector should do.

A positive result after this tour: Thank God, the testing of the passive safety features could not be done in practice. On the test bench, all (and in some cases well) remained below the permitted limit values. And which textile combination is the best for every day? It’s nice that there are two solutions depending on your budget: More or less the purchase for life comes in the form of the Stadler suit. For a little more than half the Held-Kombi also offers a great value. In this sense: have a good trip!

Everything on the subject of textile combinations

Functional underwear advantageous

Before all zips and Velcro are closed, a few words about the underneath. Taken again and again: the favorite T-shirt or, when it gets colder, the knitted cotton sweater. Some even manage to slip the textile trousers over a pair of jeans. Anyone who drives like this naturally has serious problems with the fit. Much more important, however, is that the so-called breathability is completely flat. And the wearer of the high-tech wonder suit wonders why he peeled off a soaking wet textile suit during the wonderfully sunny coffee break.

Therefore, the functional principle of a climate membrane should be briefly recalled: It consists primarily of a vapor-permeable film through which sweat can evaporate, but which in turn does not allow water droplets to pass through. “Breathable” is of course misleading because the fabric is anything but active. And that man in Gore-Tex too & Co continues to sweat is simply a basic biological principle of the body. Which is why only special functional fabrics should be worn directly on the skin, such as those used in sports, e.g. B. used while cycling or hiking. This prevents sweat from getting stuck between the skin and the suit. In the meantime, almost every provider has various sets for different weather conditions in their range – however, another 100 euros have to be invested for a well-fitting, functional and also comfortably-fitting set.

Material ABC

6 upper-class textile suits in the 4000 km test

mps photo studio

The pore principle of Gore-Tex: water goes through in the form of steam, but not as drops

The outer material of a textile combination is usually made of polyamide (PA), also known as nylon. PA is elastic and has a low weight and high tear and abrasion resistance – but still a long way from leather. Even the PA premium version Cordura (brand name of DuPont) with a slightly better abrasion resistance! Important: reinforcements at fall zones.

The climate membrane of a textile suit should block out rain and transport sweat to the outside through its vapor permeability (“breathability”). Basic requirement for this: wearing functional underwear – cotton (e.g. in the form of T-shirts) is taboo. Gore-Tex (chemical basis: polytetrafluoroethylene) has established itself in the high-end sector.

The lining is mostly made of polyester (PES). But there are huge differences. For example, PES as a 3-D mesh fabric, which ensures pleasant air circulation.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

markus-jahn.com

Mare et Monti: The alpine Mediterranean island poses special challenges for pilots’ clothing

The MOTORRAD tire test has always proven itself in order to subject not only the tires but also the equipment for the pilots to a hardcore practical test. After all, many thousands of kilometers are ridden down in a very short time in wind and weather, which of course also places particular demands on the material of the textile suits. To do this, zips are zipped back and forth a dozen times or Velcro fasteners are opened and closed again. The suits have to prove themselves in a wide variety of driving situations: on high-speed stages over motorways or on sweaty single tracks in the Corsican hinterland. Back in Stuttgart it’s time to get down to business: Assessment of the processing quality after this stage of violence from southern Germany to the Mediterranean island, plus a precise laboratory analysis of the protectors used.
