First of all, the Asians have a firm grip on the matter. The production facilities for motorcycle gloves are usually far away in China, Pakistan or Indonesia. The 17 candidates in this comparison test also had a week-long journey from Asia in a container. Even the well-known company in the scene hero from the Bavarian town of Burgberg many models are now being manufactured in distant countries: “Engineered in Germany, made in Pakistan” can be found on the sewn label in the Held Touring 5 Tex for 69.95 euros.

Is this a first quality assessment of this test field? First of all, it is a fact that not only the very cheap grabs from the grab table are now coming from Asia. Those of the premium brands who wanted to contribute a suitable copy for our comparison test could only meet the key data “all-round, wind and waterproof, maximum 100 euros” if the motorcycle glove was sewn together in low-wage countries. Especially since many manufacturers do not want to do without high-end ingredients such as a Gore-Tex climate membrane. That is now sufficient as a meaningful quality assessment?

Sloppy processing?

When it comes to the best possible moisture protection, the breathable film made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) usually worked without any problems in our tests. After this comparative test, we are all the more astonished to note that not only do some no-name climate membranes fail in our wetness test, but also some Gore-Tex gloves that allow a good portion of water to penetrate or escape. In these cases, we are guessing less about poor functionality and more about sloppy workmanship. Before the thought “Chinese goods” settles in your head while reading: There are enough test samples from the Far East that pass this function check with flying colors. Whatever the reason – for the new buyer that would mean: Back to the dealer, complain and in return take a new pair with you.

On the other hand, the case is unequivocal if the gloves are analyzed under the aspect of “maximum accident protection”. The seamstress at the other end of the world is not to blame here if the motorcycle glove simply flies off your fingers when you hit the road. That was because it was sloppy at a much earlier stage. When a product developer in this country thought about the new all-rounder glove, but neglected the bitterly necessary anti-slip protection.

The new European standard will apply from 2016 at the latest

Instead of a tightly enclosing Velcro fastener, a slack elastic band on the wrist should now be sufficient to cover the fingers safely even in the worst case scenario. This can work, but it won’t. The risk of the motorcycle glove being torn away by the jerky acceleration when it hits the road is present even at low speeds. Which is why, in our opinion, in addition to the Velcro fastener on the cuff (which nobody does without, but which doesn’t really help), a second one on the wrist should definitely be part of the standard equipment for motorcycle gloves. It is not really clear why some manufacturers do without it.

Perhaps the new glove standard, which is currently in the final coordination phase, could mean that some manufacturers go a step further in terms of safety. Experts assume that EN 13594 will apply from 2016 at the latest. Of course, this European standard is not binding insofar as everyone who brings a motorcycle glove onto the market has to comply with it. As a consumer, you can then pay attention when shopping which copies have been tested according to EN 13594 and which have not. At least then (similar to helmets or protectors) you can be certain that certain protective functions have been clearly checked. From the outside, it is hardly apparent, even for experts, whether the martial-looking hard shell protection over the knuckles on the back of the hand actually fulfills a protective function. In the measuring procedure prescribed by the standard, which basically corresponds to the impact absorption test for protectors, the gloves must comply with certain limit values.

Hard stuff for the industry?

But that is only one aspect that motorcycle gloves will have to meet in the future. Further tests assess how safe it is to be stripped off or whether the seam thickness is really sufficient. The abrasion resistance of the fabric, whether leather or textile, is also taken into account in the new standard.

Hard stuff for the industry? Not really, because many aspects have been known for a long time. Because the current draft of EN 13594 is based on a version from 2002, which was then called the standard for “protective gloves for professional motorcyclists”. Something that only affects the workwear of motorcycle testers, courier drivers or pizza delivery men on two wheels. In the future, this restriction will no longer apply and this standard concerns us all: Protective gloves for motorcyclists – requirements and test methods. Period. What you can already pay attention to when shopping can be found on the following pages. We will also expand our test procedure accordingly with a view to the standard and are of course excited to see who will have the matter even better under control in the future.

This is how MOTORRAD tests

Traveled and submerged

The ideal case can be seen in the picture above: brilliant sunny weather, brilliant roads, a brilliant motorcycle … As in every spring, we found the best conditions for this test as part of our “MOTORCYCLE service test camp” in Provence near Marseille, where we pitched our tents below the Col d’Espigoulier. In addition to the Triumph Street Triple shown, the Yamaha MT-09 from the MOTORRAD endurance test was also used to explore the potential of the 17 test pairings on the winding country roads in southern Provence. Frequent gear changes, braking maneuvers, tricky uphill and downhill sections required a sensitive hand on the throttle. The wheat was quickly separated from the chaff here. In the late shifts of the test campers, they went back to the nitty-gritty during dry exercises: What about the processing quality and equipment, what about the safety-related potential, such as the anti-slip protection?

After the dry practice, it got damp again at the editorial headquarters in Stuttgart. Not that the rain falls from the sky here to order. For comparable test statements, of course, uniform conditions must prevail, and these can hardly be found by a test drive in the rain. As with the boots (see MOTORRAD 9/2015), the immersion bath and the filling test are used here to detect any leaks in two pairs of motorcycle gloves. Since in both cases the water ingress and egress took place in a very short time, it usually seems to be less of a constructive problem than much more of a qualitative problem. If, for example, the seams of the climate membrane were not properly taped. In any case, the diving test is a tried and tested means for everyone to check the waterproof properties immediately after purchasing and not having to determine this on the holiday tour.

New motorcycle glove standard

All-round motorcycle gloves under 100 euros in a comparison test

Lohse

Not every CE mark fits the requirements for motorcycling.

Garden or throttle

Many motorcycle gloves from this test are noticeable for their prints or sewn-ons, where a CE mark gives the impression of being particularly safe. But be careful: Not every CE mark fits the requirements for motorcycling.

A glove that is labeled in accordance with category 1 of 89/686 / EEC (photo left) only fulfills the protective function that can be expected, for example, for light gardening work. Motorcycle gloves according to the (preliminary) standard prEN 13594: 2012, on the other hand, are marked with a clear pictogram (photo on the right). The sewn-in also provides information about whether the gloves meet protection level 1 or the more stringent level 2 and whether the knuckles are protected (addition KP).

Conclusion

The requirement profile was the same for all providers: We were looking for the strong all-rounder for all days and of course also for particularly wet ones, but it can cost a maximum of 100 euros … In our final report, the Alpinestars Vega Drystar and Dane Staby 2 GTX did this job particularly well. A look at the table shows that they are convincing in all areas thanks to their particularly good properties. But they are also among the particularly expensive specimens in this test field. However, there are already some models right behind it, which are also popular and are sometimes much cheaper to get.

However, depending on the intended use, some compromises have to be accepted. Some are too cold when it rains, others too hot on warm days. From position eleven it becomes difficult: Either you fail in the wetness test or in the wearing comfort or even in both chapters.
