Half the world is currently standing still. But now is also time for us to say thank you. Thanks to the 45,178 readers of MOTORRAD and motorradonline.de who voted “Best Brands 2020” have involved. Thanks to the manufacturers, accessory specialists, chain stores, mail order companies and insurers and every single employee. Our favorite hobby would not exist without you. Even if this year’s readers’ poll could not take place, we will choose the best brands from 22 categories. In part 1 we start with the first eight categories (alphabetical order): exhausts, biker jeans, brake systems, chassis tuning, chain stores, luggage systems / suitcases, gloves and helmets.

In part 2 you can see the winners and top 10 placements in the categories chain sprays / cleaning / care products, communication systems, leather clothing, navigation systems, oils / lubricants as well as online shops and protectors.

In part 3 we present you the winners and top 10 placements in the following categories: tires, backpacks, boots, textile clothing, insurance, tools and accessories / conversions.

Exhausts

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the exhaust category: Akrapovic

Igor Akrapovic has been blowing the competition with his exhaust systems in the truest sense of the word since the beginning of our readers’ poll 15 years ago. A Valentino Rossi relies on the services of the Slovenian manufacturer in MotoGP. The Ducati works team switched to high-performance systems seven years ago and Kawasaki icon Jonathan Rea has consistently won the Superbike World Championship in recent years. No wonder that normal consumers like the top-class design, the rich sound, combined with a performance plus. Akrapovic is the undisputed number 1. Several candidates are vying for the other podium places. Termignoni was able to take third place from BOS after a year of being ousted.

Biker jeans

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the biker jeans category: Held

The robust denim pants are not yet playing first fiddle on the clothing market and it is far from clear who will emerge as the biker’s favorite in the long run. At least the German company Held, which offers men’s and women’s models, was able to defend the title this year. Vanucci had previously moved in this comfort zone, but then suddenly fell to third place and now completely off the podium. The winner was Alpinestars. The Italians passed Dainese in the same breath.

Braking systems

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the braking systems category: Brembo

Even if a further 18 brands entered the race, they are still defeated by the braking giant Brembo by around 50 percentage points every year. It is a big number in racing and has recently added the GP4-rr brake caliper to its range. Derived directly from the Moto-GP, however, it is only designed for racing use. But Brembo can also do different things and has a heart for choppers and cruisers. A monoblock four-piston caliper with four 30 mm pistons was developed especially for the new, large Harleys last year, and its black finish gives it its own visual strength. Magura and Lucas / TRW keep their positions on the popularity scale in second and third place as usual. Magura from Swabia has established itself with the patented HCT technology. It stands for reduced internal friction as in the HC1 brake pump.

Suspension tuning

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the suspension tuning category: Ohlins

Ohlins is a power and the top dog. The brand’s popularity is shown by the fact that it was the only one of the top three to even increase compared to the previous year, even if it was only 0.2 percentage points. Ohlins won the class for the 15th time in a row and the gold-anodized suspension forks remain a bestseller. There are over 120 authorized Ohlins specialist dealers and service centers in Germany. Wilbers would have loved to drive in the slipstream of the winner, but was slowed down. Company boss Benny Wilbers hopes that, among other things, his Nivomat system can score even more in the future. This is a fully automatic hydropneumatic level control system for motorcycles, which activates itself. WP Suspension also has decades of experience when it comes to chassis. The Austrians are the official partner and service provider in the International German Motorcycle Championship.

Chain stores

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the chain store category: Louis

As usual, Louis is ahead of the game, followed by Polo. Their shopping centers are widespread and the Louis catalog is a long tome. There the customer can indulge in 35,000 products from 400 brands. The motorcyclists honored this with the highest percentage of popularity that was ever achieved in this year’s reader survey. The fact that both Louis and Polo had to take minimal losses on the popularity scale is due to the tenacity of the motorcycle corner. It is far from having the range of products offered by the industry giants, but thanks to the small branches and regional ties, mainly in Baden-Wurttemberg, it is often even closer to the consumer. Everyone knows each other in a total of 14 shops.

Luggage systems / suitcases

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the luggage systems / suitcase category: Hepco & Becker

On the victory of Hepco&There is no getting around Becker so far. The front runner in our reader survey keeps climbing. One of the reasons may be that the company does not offer its transport solutions as a unisex version, but rather tailors it specifically to individual motorcycle models. With the Xceed side case and Xceed top case, Hepco developed&Becker has recently launched a completely new, independent family of suitcases that do not exist on the market. Because most aluminum cases never see a dusty jogging track anyway, the newcomers were designed for road use with plenty of storage space, easy handling, neat handles, in four colors. There was also a design rejuvenation treatment for city operations. The positions of SW-Motech and Touratech also seem to be safe in the ranking. The slight decrease in percentage compared to the previous year is not enough for Wunderlich to catch up, although the Rhinelander were able to grow again.

gloves

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the Gloves category: Hero

This is the Held company’s top discipline. Since the family company from Burgberg im Allgau developed the first special racing gloves for Toni Mang in 1983, Held has been the glove brand par excellence. In the favor of our readers, it has been way ahead for 15 years, so since the first staging of our choice. Held does pretty much everything right with its own production and also takes part in all the gimmicks that the market demands today. In this way, the customer can design his own individual glove and have it made by hand. It is a logical consequence that Held has now not only devoted itself to gloves and has positioned itself as a full-range supplier of motorcycle clothing. That didn’t hurt the finger cots. They have become even more popular. The Alpinestars and Vanucci collections are smaller and more sport-oriented. Since almost every motorcyclist has more than one pair of gloves and the bikers’ playground encompasses all possible terrain, smaller brands also have their buyers.

Helmets

Best Brands 2020 part 1: best brands from the first 8 categories

Best Brand 2020 winner in the helmet category: Schuberth / Shoei

This is the beginning of a new era. For the first time there is a double top in a category. And what a: Shoei is now just as popular as Schuberth and vice versa. So far there has only ever been one leader and his name has always been Schuberth. But Shoei never gave up and had been in the slipstream for the past three years. The X-Spirit III racing helmet runs like clockwork, Marc Márquez also has it on his head. The new Crosser VFX-WR and the Neotec II flip-up helmet cut a good figure anyway. Although Shoei equips several riders in the motorcycle world championship and can even be spelled correctly by many fans, the base of the Japanese brand does not even include 500 employees. Now we have even joined forces with Schuberth, at least on the popularity scale of our MOTORRAD readers. It is logical that the traditional German brand will always remain a bestseller: the BMW drivers love it and “Made in Germany” is an argument.
