Second hand first choice
A 650 super sports car with a V-engine and case set, cardan included? From over 400,000 changes in ownership over the past year, MOTORRAD has researched what German second-hand buyers are really into and is presenting five particularly attractive models of very different types.
Jorg Lohse
07/11/2006
Of course it’s Bayern again who are at the forefront. With around 7,000 changes of ownership last year, the F-650 series from BMW tops the list of used sales. The usual suspects crowd right behind it: Suzuki’s 600 bandit is represented, as is the GS 500 from the same company. Honda’s CBR 600 F interests buyers just as much as Yamaha’s 600 Fazer, Diversion and XV 535. Only then do the large displacements approach: Suzuki Bandit 1200, followed by BMW R 1150 GS and Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade. These top ten manage to break the 50,000 mark in used purchases. In the further course of the charts, Yamaha’s R1 joins the Kawasaki ER-5, and Suzuki’s GSX-R 750 stands peacefully next to the Kawasaki ZX-6R. All in all, a colorful mix of many small-volume all-rounders and robust sports bikes, plus a few throw-ins from the big block warehouse and the chopper scene as a set. Striking: Except for the representatives from BMW, enduros hardly seem to be of interest. On the following pages we will show you five interesting machines that are briskly traded. Newcomers and re-entrants will find what they are looking for, as will the discreet sports fan who is looking for a new kick. In the short check you will find out all the important information. All you have to do is buy it yourself.

For speedy beginners: Yamaha XJ 600 S / N Diversion – the Unimog for the weekend
Regulars’ table question: What do you associate with the XJ 600 Diversion? Answer ?? in most cases: a top case. That shouldn’t put you off as an XJ prospect. You are pragmatic and always want to have everything safely bagged. The XJ will reliably get you to work and serve you tasty curve menus on several day trips. You won’t regret reaching for the air-cooled Four any more than adding the topcase.
Construction period: 1991 to 2003 (N version 1994 to 2003)
New price (1991, 1994):
XJ 600 S 8600 marks, XJ 600 N 9590 marks
Inventory: around 19,800 machines
Sales per year: around 6000 pieces
Market situation / prices: The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) lists almost 20,000 machines in its inventory, a third of which changed hands last year. This is about the same as the current divorce rate and suggests several things. On the one hand, you split up
obviously easy from a diversion. On the other hand, it is easy to bring to the people, and the prices drop to an attractive level ?? what the potential buyer appreciates. The serious haggling starts at 1000 euros (with high mileage, but still in good condition) and ends at almost 4000 euros ?? as a young used with a complete checkbook.
Inspection: Long construction times usually mean high mileage and a lot of optimization. However, there are no great doubts about the stability of the little four. Anomalies exist among other things in the first year of construction due to a weak strut mount on the swing arm and a too lax chassis. This can be remedied by retrofit struts from White Power or Hagon, as well as a fork stabilizer, progressive fork springs and fork oil with a higher viscosity. A critical look is given to the rubber seals of the carburetor heating. Howling noises indicate severe signs of wear on the gear wheels.
Conclusion: It is what one understands by a no-frills bread-and-butter motorcycle. With the disguised S version and bare XJ 600 N, beginners and those returning to the sport get a motorcycle with high broadband benefits. Not to be forgotten: weaknesses can be eliminated with manageable effort.

For all-inclusive vacationers: BMW R 1150 GS – from the underground car park to the high mountains
Are you one of those guys who can do everything with one hand
want to have regulated? Who do without a 344-piece tool case and carry out fine mechanical and gross motor movements with a Leatherman on their belt? Then you should be exactly the GS type. You want one for all. That cuts a fine figure on the company car park and in the high alpine area and cuts a super athlete on the house track in the evening. With the solid Bajuwarin you will be able to fight your way through motorcycle life excellently in the future.
Construction time: 1999 to 2004
New price (without ABS, 1999): 19890 marks
Inventory: around 26,000 machines
Sales per year: around 3600
Market situation / prices: Sure thing, the big wave of changes is over. After the market launch of the 1200 GS in spring 2004, many riders said goodbye to their 1150 and switched to the new one. Meanwhile, calm has returned to the 1150 camp. In terms of inventory, sales are moderate. The price level is and remains high: Entry bids are not called below 6000 euros, the hammer for the last year of construction falls at around 10,000 euros. The following applies to mileage: an average of 10,000 kilometers per year are to be calculated, in individual cases these can of course vary significantly up or down.
Inspection: The Munich Wuchtbrumme is usually a guarantee of reliability. Six-figure mileage is easy to cope with with good care. At most, problems can arise from a certain degree of variation in the series. You should notice annoying details such as a jagged gearbox or the annoying constant speed jerking during the test drive, then you should check the cylinders, the rear axle housing and the gearbox outlet for possible oil leaks and check the spoke tension. Place value on a full-fledged Aus-
equipment? Then take your time searching. A
You are sure to find the right full dresser with ABS, heated grips and an original set of suitcases.
Bottom line: be careful. Once started, the relationship with the GS could be an enduring flirtation
become. You will quickly hide everything else that the motorcycle market still has in store for fun companions. For you, the abbreviation GS will then stand for “dangerous addiction”.

For small everyday escapes: Yamaha XV 535 Virago – More easy among the riders
Hand on heart: In your closet there are five hard rock cafe T-shirts, your DVD collection of course includes Easy Rider including bonus material, and Steppenwolf, Stewart and Springsteen are in the CD changer of your new Passat. Surcharge, you are a Virago contender. Hang up your Harley dream. You want manageable technology packed into one
uncomplicated chassis and powered by a solid ticking engine. As carefree as with the little one Yamaha you will never breathe the scent of freedom and adventure again.
Construction time: 1988 to 2003
New price (1988): 7230 marks
Inventory: around 46,200 machines
Sales per year: around 4500 pieces
Market situation / prices: The XV 535 has been at the top of the registration statistics for years and is well ahead of the Suzuki GSF 600 Bandit (around 42,600 units). The Virago was built for 15 years, most recently in the
Deluxe version for 5600 euros. Despite the high inventory, trade in the cardan chopper is very restrained. Only one in ten changes hands each year. The price ranges from around 1400 euros (years of construction 1988 to ?? 92, around 20,000 kilometers run-
performance) up to almost 4,000 euros (years of construction 2000 to ?? 03, about 5,000 kilometers run).
Viewing: The chopper scene offers two major advantages for second-hand buyers. The machines are externally extremely well cared for because of the shiny chrome ingredients and also ?? what a lot to do with the genre
Has ?? extremely little driven. This explains why machines over ten years old have barely 20,000 kilometers on the clock. Another advantage of the XV is the maintenance-free cardan drive. An intensive look under the chrome dress is still necessary. Especially
the rust-prone exhaust system behind the double pipe-
Dummies and the fuel tap in the splash area of the rear wheel should be carefully checked. Mechanically, the 535 Virago is very reliable.
Conclusion: are you still driving or are you already alive? Forget the mighty cubic capacity skirmish that is currently dominating the current cruiser scene. Almost 20 years after its market launch, the Virago can still set a clear accent in terms of driving dynamics.

For dynamic purists: Suzuki SV 650 / S – it doesn’t work, it doesn’t exist
You are a well-balanced type, appreciate the essentials, the solitary sifting through the best cornering areas. In the meantime you have perfected your driving style. Increasing horsepower kicks no longer appeal to you, but rather the feeling of being in full control of a motorcycle. What you need is THE driving machine. Take the SV. Easy and precise to handle, plus a powerful engine. And on Saturday evening in the garage you can have one or the other
Think about modification. You get the package at extremely attractive prices.
Construction time: 1999 until today
New price (1999):
SV 650 S 11790 marks, SV 650 11090 marks
Inventory: around 23,200 machines
Sales per year: around 3300
Market situation / prices: On the market since 1999, the SV has firmly anchored itself in the top ten with around 23,000 registered copies. And the owners are largely loyal to it: around 3300 sales per year are not measured against the inventory
just lush. Entry costs around 2500 euros. But be careful: there is all sorts of tinkered and ridden material for this. More attractive offers are available from 3000 euros. Young used vehicles are traded between 4,000 and 4,500 euros, above which the price war with new vehicles begins.
Inspection: There are no typical weaknesses in the Suzuki. In the MOTORRAD long-distance test with the disguised SV 650 S, only the cracks on the gear wheels of the fifth gear were noticed. It is therefore advisable to take a detailed test drive with special attention to the acoustics from the rear derailleur. A critical look is given to the numerous modifications: a superbike handlebars can cause unrest in the chassis at higher speeds, the sports exhaust can call the force of order into action,
An attachment without an expert opinion makes it difficult to issue the badge. It is good if the seller also offers the original part in such cases and can thus prove that my machine is accident-free.
Conclusion: Comprehensively modeled in 2003, the SV 650 remains in a disguised S or naked version
the bringer, even if real fans of the current one
Injection model no longer because of its angular look
want to show true love.

For speed junkies: Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade – Fast and furious
All you have to do is pull the rip cord and say goodbye to the current news with a confident nod of your head-
ellen performance debate about 300 km / h and 200 hp. What now? Take the Superbike theme back to the beginning and set your sights on the original version of the Fireblade. The blade was sharpened for the first time 15 years ago and cut the finest fillet pieces from every course, whether it was a race track or a home track. The curve menu that a well-hung CBR 900 RR serves you today is still a few stars away from banal home-style cooking.
Construction period: 1992 to 2003
New price (1992): 19575 marks
Stock: around 17,200 machines
Sales per year: around 3500 pieces
Market situation / prices: Benefit from the high willingness to change in the sports league! Thanks to the quick updates on the fast machines, the owners also change their vehicle very quickly. The Fireblade forms there
no exception. However: Older models that are available as
attractive super bargains are offered from 2500 euros, have already passed through many hands and wear hard signs of use on and under the dress. For well-kept specimens, 1000 euros more should be calculated. The carburettor-equipped types SC 28 and SC 33 are traded for almost 6,000 euros, depending on their condition, the price range of the CBR 900 RR with manifold injection stretches from around 6,000 to 9,000 euros.
Inspection: Mechanically speaking, Honda’s top athletes are extremely reliable. With good care, the mileage of the used vehicle does not play such a big role. On the other hand, the range of applications can be a problem. Because even a 15-year-old Fireblade still likes to be on the racetrack. So look for suspicious tracks on and especially under the fairing during inspection and test drive, check the steering angle, the bearing play, fork seals, brake discs for distortion and possible blue smoke-
flags from the exhaust.
Conclusion: The fact that the original Fireblade was once the model for the new generation of super sports can still be seen today. And their quality of offering an attractive place to sports riders with ambitions for tourism can also still be experienced today. Try your luck and find one of the first in its original state.
