Before the alpine tour
Although we almost didn’t believe it anymore: The problem child FJ 1100 made first expressions of life. So the chances for a big tour with the four 999 euro bikes are good, the preparations are in full swing. Until then, the CX 500, GS 500 and XT 600 swim more or less diligently with the day-to-day operations of the editorial team.

Although we almost didn’t believe it anymore: the problem child Yamaha FJ 1100 gave the first expressions of life after a number of contortions, bloody fingers and highly explosive start-up aid from the can. So the chances for a big tour in the Central Alps with the four 999 euro bikes are good, the preparations are in full swing. In two days there are over 1000 kilometers and lots of passes on the program. Hopefully the next part of the 999 Euro Bikes will show how the completely different candidates will prove themselves. Until then, Honda CX 500, Suzuki swim GS 500 and Yamaha XT 600 more or less hardworking in the day-to-day operations of the editorial team.

Honda CX 500
There is little surprising to report about the slurry pump front. The Honda can’t keep up with the 3000 kilometers the GS 500 has unwound since it was bought in the spring, but over 2000 kilometers isn’t bad either. Although no colleague has dared to go on longer trips with the CX so far. The long-distance record is currently on a trip to Nordlingen, just under 150 kilometers from Stuttgart. Well, that will soon change with the common alpine tour. And finally, there is nothing to complain about about the reliability of the slurry pump. The only remark in the logbook in the last few weeks: a flashing frequency that increases with increasing engine speed ?? really nothing to worry about. So everything should go smoothly at the planned TuV date? because beforehand we buy the Honda a couple of new soles and we also test the horn. Promised. In contrast to the Yamaha XT 600 (see left page), it should work right away with a new sticker. Hec
Suzuki GS 500
The GS has long been one of the extremely popular machines in the editorial fleet. I wasn’t out with her for a good two weeks because I always found a colleague who wanted to drive the Suzuki. Almost missed the uncomplicated twin a bit. When I finally set off on my way home with my godchild, the needle on the tachometer stopped twitching a bit. Great, is the reliable GS now letting me down? When I get home, I take a closer look at the story. Instead of the feared capital loss, the problem is simply a loose-vibrated union nut on the tachometer shaft. Of course, the ad cannot do this
function. After threading the shaft and tightening the nut with pliers, everything is back to normal. A harmless defect that cannot tarnish the good impression that Suzi has made so far. Hec
Yamaha XT 600
The first attempt to get the XT through the TuV unfortunately failed. The reasons: aging cracks in the tires and porous rubber, as well as a barely perceptible horn signal. The fact that they simply forgot to blow the horn at least once before the test led to great amusement in the editorial team. Of course, I didn’t want to negotiate a second setback at the TuV. So quickly mount the Bridgestone TW 301/302 tires that were ordered but not yet delivered. And “fix the horn defect” ?? it can only be explained as a chain of tragic circumstances: The new battery installed directly before the first TuV visit turned out to be as good as not charged. Someone had obviously needed the charger for other purposes and disconnected it without telling us. While the light test took place with the engine running, the TuV man checked the function of the horn without the assistance of the alternator? hence the pathetic sound. The horn had already found its way back to the correct pitch on the way home. The inspector did not complain about the disc brake the first time, but the brake fluid was changed right away ?? finally the brakes have their bite again. Yamaha FJ 1100
The standstill of the FJ seems to be over soon. After weeks, the urgently needed spare parts for the badly battered carburetor battery, ordered via the Internet, finally arrived. As a result, Yamaha godfather Stefan Gluck was able to at least temporarily reinstall the carburetor, which was equipped with fresh nozzle sticks, float needles, seals and nozzles, in a nocturnal lightning campaign. After a number of dislocations, bloody fingers, the help of highly explosive starting aid from the can and a few misfires, it then happened: The four-cylinder actually came to life. He’s still rattling around a bit, but at least he’s walking. Colleague Gluck went on vacation the next morning? without FJ. Then all you have to do is synchronize the carburetor, adjust the idle speed and reassemble all the attachments. Hopefully Stefan will come back from vacation well rested. Because then you have to step on the gas to get the thickest bumbler in the used quartet completely fit for the upcoming Alpine tour (see below). Hec
Alps glow
In part 5 of the 999 Euro Bikes, which is planned for MOTORRAD 18/2007, we can hopefully report on a joint tour with the four machines. The goal: the Central Alps. Aside from the mountains, the demands on people and materials are also very high. In two days there are over 1000 kilometers and lots of passes on the program. How will the completely different candidates prove themselves? The crucial question: will the FJ 1100 hold out? And who will win the reliability rating, who will win the curve trophy? Does the XT 600 run away from everyone in tight spaces? Can the CX 500 keep up to a certain extent, or does it shoot straight downhill in the third bend due to a lack of sufficient braking power? Does the GS 500 need less than five liters of fuel per 100 kilometers? Question after question. We are very excited about the answers ourselves. However, one thing is already pretty certain: entertainment should be provided.
