BMW F 800 GS – Tips for buying a used vehicle
From model year 2008
With 798 cubic meters and 85 hp, it can be ridden perfectly over gravel and stone. In ten years of construction, the consistently enduresque 800 series has sold over 13,000 times. The used BMW F 800 GS is also a quiet bestseller.

First a few words about driving on paved roads: If you feel permanently inferior with 85 HP, 83 Newton meters and barely more than 220 kilos on a winding asphalt strip, you are either surrounded by life-weary speeders – or you simply lack the ability to drive a motorcycle at high speed. Drive fast and have fun doing it, that is without a doubt excellent with the 800. Basta. And with that, everything should be on the subject “road” be said, we come now to the chapter “Off the beaten track”. The following applies to the BMW F 800 GS built from 2008 to 2018: Drive fast and relax, that also works extremely well. But also trial-like passages, where sensitive handling is required in order not to end up on the side, can be mastered well with the rather light and slim middle class enduro compared to its big boxer sister.

Established in the adventure scene
Reasons for the amazing off-road capability include the very homogeneous power delivery, good traction thanks to a long swing arm and, above all, the 21-inch front wheel. Its diameter is around four centimeters more than the 19-inch models of travel enduros that are designed for road use, and it rolls more comfortably and with less resistance over transverse grooves and bumps. The BMW F 800 GS is therefore predestined for trips where paved routes are not a matter of course.

The digital panel with gear and fuel level display was an extra cost for new vehicles as an optional extra.
In any case, the BMW F 800 GS has established itself in the adventure scene and has sold well. But also many solo travelers who only move on tarred ground have taken BMW into their hearts: reliable in-line twin, great luggage storage, low consumption, long range, great! Perhaps from 2013 a little more attention will be paid to the minimally different design and optional assistance systems, but apart from Petitessen, the basic character has hardly changed during the entire construction period. As a used vehicle, it is therefore stable in value and sought after. How demand develops in the future will probably also depend on the success of the 850 successor. Our top test will clarify what this can do, also in comparison to the 800, in the next issue.

Market situation
With this huge used offer, every interested party will find a suitable offer nearby. But no illusions, please: bargains are the exception with the BMW F 800 GS!
Example ad: EZ 9/2016, 9,971 km for 8,790 euros
Lowered special model checked by the dealer “GS Trophy” with a few kilometers and only one previous owner – great value!
Offers from 7,000 euros (medium price level):
Example display: 42,538 km, EZ 6/2012, chic special model GS Trophy from 1st hand, with comfort seat, heated grips, LED indicators, on-board computer, main stand, windshield and pannier racks from Touratech, 1 year warranty, 7,349 euros (dealer from Schleswig-Holstein ).
About twice as many private as dealer offers. Here it is worthwhile to compare the offers exactly (additional accessories, guarantee services), because some asking prices are exaggerated.
Offers from 9,000 euros (high price level):
Example display: 4,315 km, EZ 5/2017, dynamic package, Pro driving modes, ESA chassis, heated grips, on-board computer, comfort seat, main stand, color black metallic, former rental vehicle 9,400 euros (dealer from Saxony-Anhalt).
In the priced upper class there are also and especially at dealers almost new used vehicles for 10,000 euros. On the other hand, offers well over 11,000 euros rarely appear justified, even despite being fully equipped.
Dealer interview with Paul Werden (Kohl Motorrad)
MOTORCYCLE: With the BMW F 800 GS, you can actually change your mind about boxers too?
Paul Will: Absolutely! During longer consultations, I sometimes hear that the customer also wants to drive off-road and is looking for a little more adventure. Then I draw your attention to the tire dimensions, which leave the BMW F 800 GS with many options for real off-road tires. And the larger front wheel alone makes the motorcycle much more off-road than the big GS. However, if the customer always wants to go on vacation as a couple and with plenty of luggage, I don’t need to mention these advantages of the 800 series.
Kohl motorcycle
Paul Werden (59), Motorcycle Sales Manager at Kohl Motorrad in Aachen.
MOTORCYCLE: And who are those who specifically ask about the BMW F 800 GS??
Paul Will: Newcomers from the single-cylinder GS predecessors who are looking for a new machine after many satisfied years, or newcomers to the GS world who want to postpone buying a boxer a little longer. I also find it interesting that the BMW F 800 GS is so popular as a rental motorcycle. Especially with providers abroad, the machine is noticeably often in the program and is well booked. I made use of it myself on Tenerife and Mallorca and was amazed how easy it was to live with this motorcycle in every situation. I think that some drivers come back with a similar enthusiasm and take the desire to buy home with them from their vacation. People then stand in our shop to ask for a used 800.
MOTORCYCLE: Which is now being replaced by the 850. The prices don’t tumble?
Paul Will: Strangely not. The interest in the successor has been aroused, and this is probably what creates a suction. But buyers are now also comparing the new prices for a fully equipped 850, while our young 800 second-hand offers on site in visibly good condition are already around 9,000 euros. When the price differences are very high, some people start thinking. With the option of lowering the car from the factory, used 800s as good as new are also in competition with the more roadworthy F 750 GS.
MOTORCYCLE: Besides lowering, what else is needed?
Paul Will: Suitcase and sat nav – makes sense for travelers too. And then many also ask for off-road equipment such as engine protection plates, protective bars, additional headlights or other luggage options. We are dealing with a motorcycle that you don’t just hang something on to just because it looks good. At least 99 percent of the 800 GS riders here with us really need these parts. This is not a show!
