A seasoned BMW dealer, who would rather not read his name here, sums it up very nicely: “Many 1200 drivers should prefer to drive the 800. You would have a lot more! ”But don’t do it and you will miss a lot. But that’s the way it is in the BMW world: According to some gentlemen, real motorcycles must have at least the full liter. Everything below is good at best for beginners and women. The BMW F 800 R, which was presented at the end of 2008 and sold from spring 2009, is a real expert driving circles around the rest of the BMW street models. Stunt world champion Christian Pfeiffer will already know why he chose this perfectly balanced motorcycle as his work tool.

And yet the officially 87 hp, but in practice usually significantly more powerful BMW F 800 R ranks at the lower end of the BMW prestige pecking order and actually ends up disproportionately often in the hands of beginners and women. They can then look forward to an engine that is hanging super gently on the gas and raging through the rev range very lively. The parallel twin built by Rotax has to do with a chassis that masters the tightrope walk between comfort and sport. The high-torque F 800 R can do both: take a leisurely stroll, but also use a knife between your teeth on the house route. When it comes to secondary virtues, everything is also in the paint: good pillion suitability, low consumption, decent workmanship and ergonomics that can be easily adapted to all driver formats. Small used purchase tip: buy the F 800 R as a second moped. I bet it will become the first motorcycle very quickly?!

The BWM F 800 R is a very popular second moped for many.

2009 Market launch in May; Colors: white / black, orange, white aluminum metallic. 7940 euros. 

2010 New price: 8200 euros; Additionally in the program (only for the model year 2010): Special model “Chris Pfeiffer”, among others. with Akrapovic rear silencer, LED indicators, special paint. 9200 euros.

2011 New colors: yellow metallic / black, gray metallic / black, white / blue / red. 8300 euros.

Market situation of the BMW F 800 R.

Many BMW F 800 R suffer the fate of typical entry-level and re-entry-level machines: They are sold again relatively quickly by their first owners when something bigger and stronger beckons. And since the number of new sales was quite high, the used market is very well filled. Models from the first years of construction, possibly in lean equipment and with a relatively high mileage, are available for well under 5000 euros. But not necessarily a bargain – see the text below for viewing, keyword “maintenance backlog”.

However, first-hand sweets that are already well-groomed are offered between 5600 and almost 7000 euros, and anyone who, as a private seller, demands over 7000 euros, has to score with complete equipment and very low mileage. And of course with the aforementioned maintenance certificates. The offer at the dealers is consistently more expensive. At least at first glance. But since the BMW F 800 R belongs to the younger used category, a used vehicle guarantee is almost always part of the offer. Which is worth a lot when it comes to the fact that BMW original spare parts prices have to be paid.

There were three unofficial recalls (at BMW this is called “Technical Actions”): Combination switch (March 2010), radiator cap (November 2011) and battery (November 2014). Which would already list possible and supposedly typical quirks. Even more important for the tour program are the construction sites caused by the seller – keyword maintenance backlog. The care mentality of some BMW F 800 R owners does not necessarily correspond to that which characterizes owners of larger BMW models.

Tires worn out, chain set and brake pads due, major inspection plus a little bits and pieces – that adds up to easily 1000 euros and more, which are due at the BMW dealer. A complete service book is therefore worth real money. And no accidents or accidents, because the footrest extensions, for example, are part of the rear frame. No drama in terms of material costs, but quite (time) consuming in terms of screwdriving technology. And therefore very expensive in the workshop.
