Is it worth the used sports tourer?
Bavaria’s K series has always been the first choice for jetsetters among motorcycle tourists. The last expansion stage of the four-wheeler with 175 hp has been attracting visitors since 2009. The used BMW K 1300 S is now available for well under ten million. Is it worth going to low-cost airlines??

A clear answer: Of course it’s worth it! Especially if you want to incorporate the aspects “far, fast, good” into your travel plans. Because in the sports touring segment, BMW can K 1300 S still maintain their claim to leadership even after six years of construction. Small restriction to the above answer: Of course, the maintenance condition has to be right (more on this on the “Inspection” page). And just as important: The attractive price of the desired used should not be bought with boring accountant equipment. After all: BMW had already switched from the usual “optionally available” to “standard” with the ABS, at least with the predecessor K 1200 S.

However, in order to be able to enjoy the four-cylinder jumbo without ifs and buts, the first owner should not have waived the extras ESA II (electronically adjustable chassis), ASC (traction control) and the shift assistant, which are subject to a surcharge. Because only with these delicacies is the 258 kilo BMW K 1300 S perfectly equipped for all occasions. Regardless of whether you are dashing across the train with a passenger and holiday luggage or want to take a short run on the home route after work. Need a boarding pass? The journey starts from 7000 euros.

Market situation
MOTORCYCLE
Availability on the market: high.
The first BMW K 1300 S models cost almost 16,000 euros when they were launched, but very few buyers have actually opted for the relatively economically equipped basic model. On average, at least 2000 euros must be added to extras that were actually shown on the invoice. After six years, the first models are now available for 10,000 euros less. The mileage only has a minimal impact on the price. These examples from the sales exchanges: EZ 4/2009, 26,000 km for 7950 euros, or EZ 5/2009, 57,000 km for 7,999 euros.
Rather, one of the notorious false colors such as the flashy lava orange metallic can have a somewhat price-reducing effect: model year 2009, 77,000 km, full equipment, full service history for 6750 euros. The still young history of the BMW K 1300 S ensures that many motorcycles are still offered by former new buyers and that their extensive equipment (including tank bags) is exclusively BMW original. The top-equipped special models (“HP”, “30 Years of K” or “Motorsport”) are a little hard to find. Buying tip: a freshly serviced 2012 model from first hand with a maximum mileage of 25,000 kilometers and a dynamic package for just under 10,000 euros.

The “new” K series also remains somehow different: an almost horizontal row quad, Duolever front wheel suspension.
Even if the used one is waiting in front of the garage door in perfect condition: Don’t let it dazzle and check the (ideally completely stamped) maintenance booklet. This ensures that the BMW K 1300 S is up to date. Finally, BMW carried out eight “technical campaigns” – including major construction sites such as replacing the reversing lever (2010) or the rear wheel flange (2015). With a view to the odometer reading, it is of course interesting to see what may be due shortly and what will cost accordingly. Like adjusting the valve clearance after 30,000 kilometers.
A runtime-related defect in the ESA shock absorber (leakage or failure of the motor due to moisture and dirt) also quickly becomes a nuisance. In the MOTORRAD endurance test, the sister model BMW K 1300 GT disappointed with major engine damage. Whether it is an individual case or not – the same applies here: With a proper maintenance history, possible problems could also be dealt with in an accommodating manner.
