Sports tourers at half price?

Since 2010, Honda’s legendary touring sport abbreviation VFR has finally been available with a really fat V4 drive. But despite the large fan base, the Honda VFR 1200 F got off to a very cautious start. Can it hold its own better as a used one at half the original price?

One hundred and sixty-two thousand … An impressive number if you consider the European sales of Honda’s VFR models since the RC24 (VFR 750 F) from 1986. With the VFR series, Honda has set a benchmark in the touring sport segment. It goes without saying that, even in the age of “super size me”, the three-quarter liter or the moderate increase to 782 cm³ is no longer sufficient. At the latest with the extremely restrained facelift of the VFR 800 in 2006, it was clear that V4 fans who love to travel had to be served significantly more. MOTORRAD briefly dreamed of a VFR 1000 with 135 hp and 225 kilograms. The Honda appears at the end of 2009 VFR 1200 F significantly stronger, but also significantly heavier than the editorial team’s dream.

The Honda VFR 1200 F did not convince 100 percent in the test: very good, but not excellent, according to the top test. In Germany, just under 2500 buyers have so far opted for the VFR 1200 F. But as a reliable used, the large V4 can still make the race.

The Honda VFR 1200 F is also available with a dual clutch transmission (DCT) for an extra charge of 1300 euros.

The Honda workshops agree: For them, the Honda VFR 1200 F falls into the endurance runner category. As a rule, it is only on the lifting platform if the long inspection intervals (every 12,000 kilometers) have to be ticked off. The fact that the V4 engine including cardan shaft and DCT dual clutch transmission is trimmed for durability was also ensured by the identical sister model, the Crosstourer, in the MOTORRAD endurance test over a distance of 50,000 kilometers. VFR drivers report cardan leaks in individual cases, but these were mostly fixed (replacement of seals / O-rings) on goodwill.

Much more often in the criticism: high brake pad wear (front) and rust on the screws of the brake discs. Ideally, the Honda VFR 1200 F has a full service history, with which the software update for the engine control as well as two recalls plus a service message for certain chassis numbers (axial play water pump) should be done.

Centrally placed tachometer, garnished with digital displays. In 2010 still economical infotainment, from the 2012 model the cockpit spits out significantly more content.

With around 2400 units, the Honda VFR 1200 F has started very cautiously since its debut in 2010, but has so far sold a little better than its long-legged sister model, the Crosstourer (around 2200 units). Almost a third of the 1200s are ordered with the DCT transmission – dealers report that the trend is increasing. Used, the sporty V4 tourer is now traded well. The trade in the early 2010 models starts at just over 6,000 euros, but the mileage is then relatively high (30,000 kilometers and more). For DCT models, interested parties usually have to calculate an extra charge of around 1000 euros. When negotiating prices, you should definitely take the inspection costs into account.

While the small service intervals for the Honda VFR 1200 F (12,000, 36,000, etc.) are done for around 150 euros, depending on the region, the 24,000 (or 48,000, etc.) with the more complex valve clearance control usually beat 500 Euros and more to book. The most popular accessories include accessory silencers (mostly from BOS or the Belgian brand Dam), a Superbike handlebar that can be adjusted for traveling (ABM, Gilles or LSL), occasionally in combination with adjustable footrests (e.g. from Thurn Motorsport).
