+++ Update from July 7th: “Service action” becomes an official recall. BMW changes series production Worldwide, 168,500 water-cooled BMW R 1200 GS K50 / 51 models have to go to the workshop because the Telelever standpipes can come loose.

+++ Update from July 7th 2017 +++
Even if BMW didn’t want to call it that, now it’s a callback. Because now it’s official and has been listed by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in the recall database since July 5, 2017, KBA reference number 7176. It is not yet clear whether this will also involve a change in the process of repairing the fork tubes.
You can read the detailed background report in MOTORRAD 15/2017, from July 7th at the kiosk and as PDF for download here.
Update from July 3: BMW changes series production
Rivas
From now on, new BMWs will be in series production R 1200 GS Constructively modified standpipes installed in the Spandau factory. According to MOTORRAD information, the plugs of the fork tubes are no longer secured by four caulking marks but by a completely circumferential groove.

Update from June 30, 2017: BMW comments
At the request of MOTORRADonline, BMW confirmed that the “Service action check standpipe” is already in full swing worldwide. When asked what exactly should be checked in the workshops on the current BMW R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure models, BMW Motorrad press spokesman Gerhard Lindner replied:
“The standpipes must be checked for any previous damage in accordance with the workshop instructions. If there is no previous damage, a routine check will be carried out in the future as part of the maintenance plan. If there is only a slight previous damage, both standpipes are retrofitted with an additional standpipe socket each. If the previous damage is too great, the standpipes are replaced with appropriately modified new parts.”
According to research by MOTORRAD, this means in detail: If a gap between the sealing plug and standpipe is not measurable on either side of the Telelever front wheel suspension, the mechanic does nothing, but has to check again at the next inspection. If there is a measurable gap of less than or equal to 0.2 millimeters between the standpipe and the plug, both standpipes are reinforced by pressing on locking bushes. If there is a gap larger than 0.2 millimeters, new standpipes with already pressed-on locking bushes are installed.
A service manual for North American BMW dealers that has appeared on the Internet is currently causing irritation among Germany’s R 1200 GS drivers. Assuming its authenticity, it proves that in the USA all stanchions of the current BMW R 1200 GS, including those that have not been damaged, will receive safety sockets from November 2013 or will be replaced with a gap of 0.2 mm and a safety socket. The reason for this apparent unequal treatment is likely to be the much stricter US product liability laws.

BMW has a worldwide “Service action” [which is now an official recall; Note d. Red.], Which invites all owners of a water-cooled BMW R 1200 GS / Adventure (model code K 50 / K51) from November 2013 to June 2017 to visit the workshop. The standpipes of the Telelever are examined for possible damage. 168,500 BMW R 1200 GS are affected worldwide, in Germany there are 29,800.
Specifically, the fit of the upper plugs of the two fork tubes of the Telelever front wheel suspension of the BMW R 1200 GS is checked. According to MOTORRAD research, a gap can form between the plug and the standpipe – hardly visible as it is covered by a rubber sleeve. If such previous damage remains undetected, it can lead to indifferent driving behavior, to clacking and in extreme cases even to the fork breaking away.
BMW has started investigations of “a few cases known worldwide”, “in which loosened plugs on vehicles involved in an accident were noticeable,” said BMW Motorrad spokesman Gerhard Lindner when asked by MOTORRAD. The result of these investigations is still pending.
