These graphics, which were newly published by BMW in February 2021, present a crash-proof framework. The difference to the C1: These designs do not provide for a roof.

The patent drawings from 2019 and 2020 are reminiscent of the BMW C1 cabin scooter.

This time it should be a roof structure made of carbon.

The highlight: The roof should be removable so that the vehicle can not only be used as a commuter bike with extra protection, but also for “completely normal” Country road tours.

BMW is planning safety scooters
Crash-proof frame, but no roof
These newly published sketches from BMW present a crash-proof framework. The difference to the C1 scooter: These designs do not provide for a roof.

The unforgettable BMW safety scooter C1 has burned itself forever on our retinas. and BMW patents were already indicated in 2019 and 2020 suggests that we could expect a new BMW scooter of this type. The patent from last year shows a removable roof structure – including winglets, safety cell with airbags, four-point seat belt, backrest and windshield. It seems as if BMW is pursuing a vehicle concept with this design that, for example, meets the needs of a commuter during the week and should resemble a completely normal motorcycle as much as possible for a trip on the weekend.
Not a technical patent, but designs
The difference to the new graphics: BMW submitted them to the EU authorities not as a technical patent, but as a “Designs”. This suggests that BMW is concerned with protecting the appearance. The graphics were submitted in 2018, but were not published until two years later.
Impact protection for head-on collisions
The second difference to the Patent specifications from 2019 and 2020 sits at the front: The frame construction provides for an impact protection, while the driver moves all the way back into the protection of the metal tubes that protrude over the head and also spread protectively around the hips and shoulders.
So that the pilot can still get to the handlebars, the handlebars are moved to the rear. The front suspension and damping appears to be housed in the steering head bearing so that the entire fork assembly can move up and down, while the rear suspension is absent on the drawings but will likely be a conventional swing design.
Drive could donate BMW C Evolution
The rear wheel hub shown in the pictures houses either a final drive or a hub motor, there does not seem to be any provision for a conventionally mounted combustion engine. A vehicle based on this frame construction could get the electric motor from the large electric scooter BMW C Evolution. It provides 48 hp, drives up to 129 km / h and has a range of 160 kilometers. That would be useful performance data.
Conclusion
The fact that BMW submitted these designs to the EU authorities as early as 2018 could indicate that they wanted to present a vehicle of this type – or at least a concept – before publication two years later. It is not known whether this is actually the case, and if so, whether the delay is due to the circumstances of the pandemic.
