Honda worked on an airbag for motorcycles for around 15 years before it finally made its debut in the Gold Wing 1800 in 2006. Since then, the large tourer has been optionally equipped with an airbag for the driver. Despite countless attempts by various manufacturers, the airbag was not widely used.

For the first time with a knee airbag

Since, unlike in a car, the driver’s seating position on a motorcycle varies much more, efficient protection by the airbag can hardly be guaranteed.

Nothing is known about a planned series use.

On a scooter, however, the situation is different. The driver does much less gymnastics and is therefore much more predictable from his seating position. That was probably the case too Yamaha and have a corresponding airbag system patented.

In addition to a main airbag, which is supposed to support the driver’s upper body in the event of a crash, the Japanese also rely on a knee airbag, which is supposed to protect the lower extremities in the event of an impact.

So far, however, there has only been a patent application for the airbag system; nothing is currently known about a planned series use.
