BAD FINGERS?
You don’t have to go to the alpine peaks unsafe to test gloves. MOTORRAD will take care of that for you.
Klaus Herder

The human body is a great construction. Now, of course, this knowledge is not that new, but it is reminded of the motorcyclist when it gets shady again outside. Nature has cleverly arranged it in such a way that in critical situations the body first separates from the parts that it can most easily do without. For example, hands and feet. But before the body ensures that these outer extremities turn black, no longer smell good and eventually fall off, the body sends clear warnings to the control center. The motorcyclist freezes, switches to the emergency program and has completely different worries than worrying about proper braking, shifting or flashing. Ergo: If you freeze, you drive without concentration and unsafe.
Conversely, this means that warm hands and feet radiate to the rest of the body and ensure well-being and fun while driving in winter. But this not exactly revolutionary finding seems to have not yet reached some of the motorcyclists. In the summer, a lot of money is invested in parrot suits and replica helmets, but in the transition period and in winter, the Bundeswehr gloves, which are very bad when they are new, or worn out ancient finger cots are used. Winter gloves are so expensive, they are so unwieldy and they look so bulky.
Frills. Even well-known suppliers have suitable models for well under 80 marks. Suitable for use between plus ten and minus five degrees Celsius, because this is where the German winter usually takes place. Commitment means the daily commute to work, school or university and the short evening tour around the corner. In other words, distances that are usually covered in urban or suburban traffic at speeds of up to 100 km / h. Paths in which people are diligently coupled, braked and blinked, so that, in addition to protection against the cold, a good grip is particularly important, which mittens, three-finger gloves or combinations with handlebar cuffs can only offer with difficulty.
For longer tours ?? the trip to the crystal rally or the elephant meeting ?? a slightly different type of equipment is of course required, which can be found in the box on page 123.
But back to the discount offers for every day: In addition to suitability for the temperature range mentioned, water resistance was also important when putting together the test field. In the case of gloves in the lowest price range, one can only speak of breathability to a very limited extent, even if the providers use the term generously in their advertising. In all of the models tested, it is not the high-priced Gore-Tex or Sympatex membranes that ensure wind and water-tightness, but rather the cheaper products called Sheltex or Hipora for manufacturers. The water vapor permeability of this PU-based (polyurethane) membrane does not quite come close to that of Gore-Tex and Sympatex, but its main task ?? the keeping of rainwater ?? The products did very well with one exception (shoe), the hands stayed dry in the legendary bucket test (five minutes to the cuff in cold water, moving hands). That speaks for a consistently decent processing of the membrane.
In addition to the bucket test, the seven candidates also had a detailed driving test on the test program. The task was to survive 20 kilometers of city and suburban traffic on federal and expressways on an uncovered machine. The maximum speed driven was 120 km / h. The test drives were carried out on two different dates in order to gain experience in both plus and minus temperatures.
But even before we even started driving, the first differences became clear. Since the glove cuff is usually worn over the jacket sleeve when it is dry, it should be possible to adjust it to be as windproof as possible. A wide adjustment range and an adjustment method that is as uncomplicated as possible are helpful for this. The easiest way to put on and adjust the Haveba glove was. A simple, but not too tight elastic band at the end of the cuff always ensured the right finish. A rather unfortunate example was shown by the otherwise very good Louis glove: The cuff is cut much too wide for narrow wrists and forearms, so the zipper has no function.
There were also clear differences in terms of grip. The more insulating material used on the palm, the more indirect the contact with the handlebars. This was extremely noticeable with the Krawehl product. Its grip is close to that of lined summer gloves, but it gets correspondingly fresh at temperatures around and below zero degrees.
The Gericke North Cape offers the best compromise between protection against the cold and wearing comfort, and was the only one to receive the rating “highly recommended”. For him, as for all other models, the following applies: In contrast to summer gloves, buy something larger because what ultimately warms is the insulating air.
