Weatherproof and suitably dressed from head to toe: MOTORRAD has put together complete regalia from eight major suppliers. Is there the ideal package from one manufacturer, or does the best equipment from different brands have to be pieced together??

Jorg Lohse

04/10/2008

How much a good motorcycle outfit, consisting of a helmet, textile suit, gloves and boots, can cost is a great argument. While one person wants to leave as little money as possible in the store, the other follows the motto: “Only the most expensive is good enough.” set a price limit of 1000 euros for complete equipment. That is not a small amount, but certainly not overpriced for well-protective, functional clothing. In purely mathematical terms, you would have 250 euros available for each piece of equipment. For this you would get the high-end racing model with the gloves, but would then have to make significant compromises with the station wagon. Logically, the individual parts should all play in a similar quality league.

The subject of utility was right at the top of the priority list. The 1000 euro package should be quickly slipped on for the way to work and also suitable for the tour to the south or to the North Cape. As a result, the equipment has to be able to withstand more than one rain shower, which is why a textile combination usually ends up in the shopping cart, followed by waterproof boots and gloves, plus a comfortable full-face helmet.

On test rounds through southern France followed by laboratory tests at MOTORRAD and TuV Rheinland (see box on page 78), all 32 products were finally put under the microscope. You will find the practical and measurement results sorted according to the individual providers on the following pages. And finally, MOTORRAD has put together a recommendation for both sporty and tourist-oriented drivers. Which makes it clear: The ideal package from a single source was not included in the test field. But now a new, exciting question arises: can the 1000 euro limit also be adhered to with the two ideal pairings? See for yourself.

Comprehensively equipped, good damping values: The protector package from Louis fits.

Protector test
As one of the few offers in this comparison, the Gericke textile suit is equipped with a back protector. Together with the soft foam protectors in the joints, this performs well in the impact test.

CONCLUSION
The 1000 euro offer from Hein Gericke relies on the high-quality Gore-Tex climate membrane for weather protection. All items of clothing pass the MOTORRAD wetness test without any problems. Furthermore, the textile suit can impress with its high functionality, which long-distance drivers will particularly appreciate. The grippy gloves perfectly round off the range up to this point. The poorly fitting boots with extremely slippery soles and the very noisy, drafty helmet are less appealing.

Protector test
On the test bench, two soft foam protectors from Ixs with values above the limit of 35 kN show weaknesses.

CONCLUSION
The classically cut textile is convincing in the Ixs range-
Touring suit through functionality and a clean fit. Only the protectors do not fit into the good image that the station wagon leaves behind. The boots have perfect soles for optimal support and offer the tourer solid footwear. The gloves are also made solid, but did not hold 100% tight in the wetness test. Well equipped, easy to wear: the helmet with a fog-free inner visor.

Protector test
In the impact test, the hard foam protectors are partly close to the permitted limit.

CONCLUSION
The heart of the Motoport 1000 euro combination is the solid Dane touring suit that can be worn all year round, but which eats up well over half of the budget. One shortcoming is the old-fashioned protector package. The waterproof Dane gloves go well with it, but the helmet and boots fall off.

In addition to the good equipment, the Safe-Max protectors contribute to the very good rating, which set new records with damping values well below the permitted limit. This is how MOTORRAD tests – perfect fit and pass descent

On the road and in the test laboratory, MOTORRAD took a close look at all the equipment from eight suppliers.

Practical test
First of all, all items of clothing had to prove themselves in the tough everyday motorcycle life on a clearly defined test round through Provence. On the winding route with fast-paced sections, as well as uphill and downhill passes, differences in fit, comfort and air conditioning quickly became apparent. Still in focus: processing, equipment and their practicality.

Protector test
Based on the protector standard EN 1621-1 (joints) and 1621-2 (back), TuV Rheinland determined the shock absorption values of the protectors used in the textile suits. The mean value is calculated from a total of three impacts in different zones (center, middle and edge), which should not exceed the limit of 35 kilonewtons (kN) residual force permitted by the standard. For the back protectors, the permitted limit for protection class 1 was 18 kN. For information: For back protectors of protection class 2 (not represented in this test) the value may not exceed nine kN. To determine the values, a five kilogram drop weight hits the protector from a height of one meter in free fall. Below that, a sensor registers the residual force that the protector lets through.

Wetness test
In the case of the textile suits identified as waterproof, a jet of water that is comparable to a heavy thunderstorm hits a test person in the driver’s position for ten minutes. In this way, leaks can be detected on the underwear and by means of blotting paper placed in the pockets marked as watertight. Boots and gloves were examined for their suitability for rain in a diving test (ten minutes each in the immersion bath) and a filling test (eight hours).

Final grade
Based on the practical and laboratory tests, all products are scored and graded according to a fixed key.

Exemplary work – six correct ones

These details should catch on. Our best-of-show from 32 products for a total of 7652 euros and ten cents.

Just don’t get a thick neck:
A soft insert on the collar that does not cut in or rub the skin uncomfortably over the long term. A recommendable fluffy feature that is incorporated into the Buse Nardo textile jacket and that brings real comfort.

Safe all round:
In the meantime, the all-round connection zipper should be part of the standard equipment, as is the case here with the Gericke station wagon. However, a number of providers still rely on the anachronistic crotch strap or use short alibi zippers on the back.

No wet handshake:
Waterproof gloves that are excellent for packing? This is made possible when the climate membrane is glued directly to the upper and lower fabric of the glove, as with the Held Shakal. So far, the process has only been offered by Gore-Tex.

Close to the wind:
Do you like to pull in at the top or bottom? Forgot the scarf again? It is good if the station wagon already has a safe transition from the jacket to the helmet as standard. A great extra, as seen with the Ixs Paraguay jacket.

It can also be quieter:
Making a helmet really quiet is no great rocket science. Most of the time, a good wind deflector on the chin section is enough, as is the case here with the HJC model, to keep disturbing wind noise away from the ears. Even wet and cold weather is locked out in this way.

Not for kneebissers:
Footballers and those who want to become one are looking for effective width adjusters on their calves when it comes to motorcycle boots. Much of the range has an alibi function. This one from Uvex works great. Only in this way can the shaft fit perfectly.

The best for sport and touring – puzzled together

From which parts can the optimal package for touring fans and sports fans be put together? Here are the recommendations from MOTORRAD for travelers and the mad.

The tour package
Long distance tourers who, regardless of the weather, prefer to dash from the coast into the Alps in one go and then graze as many passes as possible need the egg-laying woolly pig: helmet with a fog-free visor, comfortable suit with lots of in and out Adjustment option, comfortable gloves and sturdy boots. Our tip for travelers: Scorpion Exo-700 helmet, suit polo Drive High End, gloves Hein Gericke Eco-II GTX and boots Ixs Tempra. At 1009.70 euros, the total price remains within the bounds.

The sports package
Friends of fast journeys and companions need a fabric that is as tight-fitting as possible, but which at the same time guarantees the best possible mobility. In addition, a light, tightly fitting helmet, non-slip gloves and supple boots. The following suit combination for sports drivers emerges from the 1000 euro range of all eight providers: Uvex Boss 525 helmet, Buse Nardo / Paso suit, Held Shakal gloves and Vanucci VTB-1 boots.
