With the coarse pebbles, very significant compromises have to be accepted on wet roads.

In comparison, the Scorpion Rally has a high level of wear and tear and looks slightly wobbly in corners.

The Continental TKC 80 is also very confident in difficult terrain, but it has a narrow limit area on wet roads.

Far, fast, good? … Let’s not kid ourselves: In the meantime, the term “travel” has gained significantly more importance than “enduro” in this motorcycle segment that has been popular for years. The standard rubbers for GS and Co. are profiled accordingly.

Ultra-stable, super handy and grip until you drop. The typical enduro tires shake hands with their sister models from other segments, for example touring tires, when it comes to dynamics.

The coarse tunnels of the Battlax AX 41 interlock in an exemplary manner on loose scree and provide reliable feedback in difficult terrain. The sister Battlax A 41 has first-class straight-line stability up to top speed.

The TKC 80 is very confident even in difficult terrain due to its solid interlocking, more than sufficient for most freely drivable off-road passages and has excellent and even wear behavior at the front and rear. The Trail Attack 3 shines with an extremely short warm-up time.

The Grobstoller from Metzeler are very handy and have plenty of grip for sporty pace on winding country roads, have high cornering stability, the limit area is easy to assess. On wet roads, it shines with excellent braking performance. The Tourance Next has good cold running properties plus good grip in an inclined position and when accelerating. Overall, it has a very balanced set-up for country roads and autobahns.

13/14
First-class performance even in the most difficult terrain with excellent traction on almost all surfaces. The tunnel profile interlocks extremely well on mud slopes and slippery meadow slopes. The Adventure has the ultimate in responsiveness, especially on wet roads, with excellent cornering grip and a wide, top-of-the-range limit range with always first-class, assessable feedback.

Light-footed turning behavior with very good feedback for the existing grip reserves on asphalt. The Scorpion Trail II has a very sporty basic layout, shows its advantages especially in tight as well as fast corners and is extremely handy and precise to steer.

In the big tire test in 2019, MOTORRAD compares ten tires from five manufacturers in two different categories: off-road and enduro tires. How do the off-road and enduro tires of the respective manufacturers differ? Are they always completely different or actually designed relatively similarly? There are tires where the intersection is relatively large. This means that off-road and enduro tires have more or less the same basic character. But there are also manufacturers who have configured their two pairings very sharply. We test and compare the tires with regard to country roads, everyday life, terrain, wetness and wear.

The coarse lugs interlock in an exemplary manner on the AX 41. The A 41 has first-class straight-line stability.
Battlax AX 41
Weight: front 5.3 kg, rear 7.6 kg
Speed index: Q (up to 160 km / h)
Battlax A 41
Weight: front 5.3 kg, rear 8.0 kg
Speed index: V (up to 240 km / h)
Conclusion: The Japanese have two very differently tapered profiles in their program for travel endurists, which is also shown very clearly by our spider profile. The AX 41 is clearly geared towards good off-road traction. Those who prefer to drive their GS and Co. across country will find a reliable partner, but have to accept noticeable weaknesses on the road. The A 41 enduro tire, on the other hand, is clearly a road rubber tailored to the fast long-distance enduro rider with extremely confident straight-line stability, but only average performance on winding roads and in the wet.

The TKC 80 is also very competent in difficult terrain, the Trail Attack 3 has an extremely short warm-up time.
TKC 80
Weight: front 4.5 kg, rear 6.7 kg
Speed index: Q (up to 160 km / h)
Trail Attack 3
Weight: front 5.2 kg, rear 8.4 kg
Speed index: V (up to 240 km / h)
Conclusion: Apart from the kink in the off-road rating, the area of the blue pentagon couldn’t be more impressive. Top values on the road, a top mileage and sovereign in the wet. For the on-roaders among the travel enduro pilots, there is currently no better than the superbly revised Trail Attack 3. Harmoniously balanced, the conceptually oldest tire in the test field is presented. Even after more than 30 years of construction, the coarse-treaded TKC 80 can impressively assert itself on modern, high-horsepower travel enduros: good off-road and, on top of that, does not buckle on the road.
Slaughterer

The Karoo 3 is very handy and has plenty of grip. The Tourance Next, on the other hand, shines with good cold-running properties.
Karoo 3
Weight: front 5.2 kg, rear 7.4 kg
Speed index: V (up to 240 km / h)
Tourance Next
Weight: Weight: front 5.2 kg, rear 7.4 kg
Speed index: V (up to 240 km / h)
Conclusion: The large amount of overlap between the two tire models shows that both the Offroader Karoo 3 and the Onroader Tourance Next are essentially knitted very identically, even if the profile of the Karoo initially looks much more towards adventure. The fact is, however, that the robust look cannot be converted one-to-one into robust performance away from paved roads. Which tire for whom? The Tourance Next remains a good road all-rounder, but it lags slightly behind the competition. Anyone who appreciates off-road optics, but stays on tar, can pull up the Karoo 3 without making any major compromises.
Michelin
Markus Jahn
Michelins Grobstoller has a first-class performance even on the most difficult terrain. The Adventure offers the ultimate in responsiveness.
Anakee Wild
Weight: front 5.2 kg, rear 6.5 kg
Speed index: R (up to 170 km / h)
Anakee Adventure
Weight: front 4.9 kg, rear 7.4 kg
Speed index: V (up to 240 km / h)
Conclusion: The Anakee Wild’s pentagon points like a pointed arrow in the direction where this profile is primarily intended to be used: off-road! In all other chapters you have to accept noticeable losses. So not a recommendation for drivers who are mainly on the road with their travel enduros and want to cover long stages. The street model Anakee Adventure is similarly pointed. Better than the competition in this segment, it shines both on easy terrain and on wet roads. In the rain, no other rubber can hold a candle to the Adventure at the moment.
Pirelli
Markus Jahn
The Scorpion Rally has a nimble turn-in behavior, the Scorpion Trail II comes with a sporty basic layout.
Scorpion Rally
Weight: front 5.5 kg, rear 7.5 kg
Speed index: T (up to 190 km / h)
Scorpion Trail II
Weight: front 5.3 kg, rear 7.6 kg
Speed index: V (up to 240 km / h)
Conclusion: As with the Metzeler, the intersection of the coarse grinder and the road profile is Pirelli very high. The Scorpion Trail II is clearly geared towards the road. If you want to fine-tune your travel enduro for the almost super-sporty bend hunting on country roads and alpine passes, you cannot ignore this profile. Despite its rough appearance, the sister model Scorpion Rally is also a rather asphalt-oriented rubber. In difficult and difficult terrain, other profiles offer more traction. However, the rally offroad scores with a nice handiness.

Far, fast, good … Let’s not kid ourselves: meanwhile the term “travel” a significantly higher priority than “Enduro” in this motorcycle segment that has been popular for years.
Diagonally across the country road
Ultra-stable, super handy and grip until you drop. The typical enduro tires shake hands with their sister models from other segments, for example touring tires, when it comes to dynamics. One could almost think that the sports tires were also the inspiration for the development of a new GS rubber. Above all, the Contis Trail Attack 3, but also the Pirellis Scorpion Trail II can easily be angled up to the folding footrests. And there is a lot more! The handling is just phenomenal, the adhesive reserves seem infinitely large. No wonder that the enthusiastic touring tourist in the curves and hairpin bends of the Alps only shows some highly motivated superbikers an ever smaller taillight. The closely spaced grid of points also shows that there is not much (development) air left, the enduro tires have achieved their optimum efficiency with top points. When it comes to mileage, too, they are tough and really show stamina.
The Grobstoller, who cannot be lumped together, is completely different. Especially when new, the more off-road designed rubbers (AX 41, TKC 80, but above all Anakee Wild) are a bit stubborn. Only when the hard edges of the cleats are a bit round do they become noticeably smoother. Metzeler The Karoo 3 and Pirelli Scorpion Rally are already clearly more roadworthy per se, but the gap to the Enduro sisters from the same house is significant. With a sporty pace, the mileage also drops rapidly.
Markus Jahn
Water on the street, pee in my eyes. Don’t worry – modern motorcycle tires stick better than some insurance companies.
Safe in the rain
Regardless of whether the personal preference is more geared towards “off-road hikers” or “long-distance travelers”: Hardly anyone can avoid the rain in the course of their motorcycle career. Anyone who definitely does not want to make compromises on wet roads would have to categorically exclude the category of off-road tires. Because in comparison to the road-profiled enduro sisters, the coarse grinders on wet asphalt have to accept some very significant compromises. The best enduro tires (Metzeler Tourance Next, Michelin Anakee Adventure) are after 41.9 meters, the best off-road tires (Metzeler Karoo 3, Pirelli Scorpion Rally) are only after 50.1 meters.
Conclusion
Five manufacturers, ten tires, and each one attracts with a very special mixture. Nobody will experience a real failure, as long as they choose the model that exactly corresponds to their preferences. Rubble people pull up the Michelin Anakee Wild and don’t care about street performance. If you are looking for a balanced mix of road and terrain, you can turn to the Pirelli Scorpion Rally. If you want to eat kilometers and dust at the same time, take the Michelin Anakee Adventure into your selection and also enjoy the breathtaking rain performance. Bridgestone’s ultra-stable A 41 will convince full-size touring fans, Contis Trail Attack 3 raises the travel enduro to superbike level.
